We report a case of bilateral hearing loss in a patient treated with intravenous erythromycin lactobionate. The ototoxic reaction occurred despite the patient's having normal renal and hepatic function and the fact that serum erythromycin levels were within the predicted normal range. In addition to hearing loss, a marked labyrinthic hyporreflexia was also observed. Hearing loss improved after the treatment was discontinued, but labyrinthic abnormalities persisted suggesting that erythromycin had caused a permanent vestibular damage.

Age-related hearing loss is a very common sensory disability, affecting one in three older adults. Establishing a link between anatomical, physiological, and behavioral markers of presbycusis in a mouse model can improve the understanding of this disorder in humans. We measured age-related hearing loss for a variety of acoustic signals in quiet and noisy environments using an operant conditioning procedure and investigated the status of peripheral structures in CBA/CaJ mice. Mice showed the greatest degree of hearing loss in the last third of their lifespan, with higher thresholds in noisy tha

Age-related hearing loss may increase listening difficulties in challenging listening conditions (e.g., speech-in-noise), limiting cognitive resources available to perform common, complex multitasking behaviours like listening while driving. Older adults with hearing loss may compensate by increasing prefrontal cortex (PFC) activation in response to multitasking demands. Few realistic, controlled studies have examined how competing attentional demands of listening while driving affect performance and brain activation, and how these patterns may differ between older adults with and without audi

Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is the most common form of hearing loss that is routinely treated with hearing aids or cochlear implants. Advances in regenerative medicine have now led to animal studies examining the possibility of restoring injured hair cells with mesenchymal stem/stromal cell (MSC) administration. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to collate the existing preclinical literature evaluating MSCs as a treatment for SNHL and quantify the effect of MSCs on functional hearing. Our protocol was published online on CAMARADES. Searches were conducted in four medical

BACKGROUND: The role of T cells in health and disease has already been studied extensively in many organs, yet their activity in the cochlea and involvement in hearing loss remains less explored. This review aims to summarize current existing literature on the presence and activity of T cells in the cochlea and the link between T-cell activity and the development of hearing loss.
METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed on PubMed and Web of Science on the 4th of December 2024 using the following search term: ("T-cell" OR "T cells" OR "T-lymphocyte*") AND ("cochlea*" OR "sp

OBJECTIVES: It is shown that eliminating hearing loss in mid-life may reduce the risk for deterioration in cognitive function. Cochlear implantation (CI) is the only available therapy that can eliminate hearing loss in patients who suffer from profound sensorineural hearing loss. This suggests there may be positive effects of hearing level on cognition in older adults following CI. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to clarify whether cognitive function can be improved or maintained using cochlear implants in older adult patients with hearing impairments.
METHODS: Data for patients that

Deleterious variants of more than one hundred genes are associated with hearing loss including MYO3A, MYO6, MYO7A and MYO15A and two conventional myosins MYH9 and MYH14. Variants of MYO7A also manifest as Usher syndrome associated with dysfunction of the retina and vestibule as well as hearing loss. While the functions of MYH9 and MYH14 in the inner ear are debated, MYO3A, MYO6, MYO7A and MYO15A are expressed in inner ear hair cells along with class-I myosin MYO1C and are essential for developing and maintaining functional stereocilia on the apical surface of hair cells. Stereocilia are large,

PURPOSE: Children with cleft lip and palate (CLP) frequently experience middle-ear dysfunction and conductive hearing loss, which may affect functional listening in noise. This study examined speech-in-noise recognition and visual-task latency cost during concurrent auditory-visual task performance in children with unilateral CLP and minimal conductive hearing loss.
METHODS: Twenty-five children with unilateral CLP and minimal conductive hearing loss and 28 age-matched typically developing controls, aged 7-15 years, completed audiological assessment, a single-task speech-in-noise condition (S

BACKGROUND: Since first introduced in the mid-1980s, cochlear implant (CI) technology has significantly evolved to reach the current state of the art. Commencing with straight, lateral wall electrode arrays, advances in the last decade led to the development of slim perimodiolar arrays that lie closer to the electrically targeted spiral ganglion. Over the years, as a consequence of improving hearing benefits, CI indications have been steadily expanded. Today, individuals with moderately severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss, many with residual hearing in the low-frequency range, may re

Distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) is one of the acoustic responses derived from the inner ears and it has very sharp frequency specificities. The purpose of this study is to investigate the utility of DPOAE as a method for evaluating human cochlea functions. The whole subjects of this study were 414 ears with inner ear hearing loss, 278 ears with normal hearing, 113 ears of neonates, 62 ears of the patients who were administered cisplatin, and 15 ears with functional hearing loss. At first, 5 studies described below were performed to examine the characters and reliability of DPOA

The mechanisms linking hearing ability, inflammation, glymphatic system function, and cognitive impairment in older adults are largely unknown. To investigate this issues, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to test for dysfunctions in the glymphatic system of older adults with hearing loss and to determine the relationship of glymphatic dysfunction, inflammation and cognitive deficits. This cross-sectional observational study included participants with ARHL and healthy controls (HCs) between January 2021 and December 2023. Participants underwent MRI scans of the glymphatic indices and c

Mutations of gap junction connexin genes induce a high incidence of nonsyndromic hearing loss. Pannexin genes also encode gap junctional proteins in vertebrates. Recent studies demonstrated that Pannexin-1 (Panx1) deficiency in mice and mutation in humans are also associated with hearing loss. So far, several Panx1 knockout (KO) mouse lines were established. In general, these Panx1 KO mouse lines demonstrate consistent phenotypes in most aspects, including hearing loss. However, a recent study reported that a Panx1 KO mouse line, which was created by Genentech Inc., had no hearing loss as meas

Hearing loss is the most common sensory deficit experienced by humans and represents one of the largest chronic health conditions worldwide. It is expected that around 10% of the world's population will be affected by disabling hearing impairment by 2050. Hereditary hearing loss accounts for most of the known forms of congenital deafness, and over 25% of adult-onset or progressive hearing loss. Despite the identification of well over 130 genes associated with deafness, there is currently no curative treatment for inherited deafness. Recently, several pre-clinical studies in mice that exhibit k

Tissue-specific alternative splicing (AS) is emerging as one of the most exciting types of mechanisms associated with organ development and disease. In the auditory system, many hearing-related genes undergo AS, and errors in this process result in syndromic or non-syndromic hearing loss. However, little is known about the factors and mechanisms directing AS in the inner ear. In the present study, we identified a novel RNA-binding protein, Rbm24, which was critically involved in regulating inner-ear-specific AS. Rbm24 deletion resulted in hearing loss and defects in motor coordination. Global

OBJECTIVE: To report a novel management strategy for mixed hearing loss in advanced otosclerosis.
METHODS: A 50-year-old male was referred to St Thomas' Hearing Implant Centre with otosclerosis; he was no longer able to wear conventional hearing aids because of recurrent otitis externa. The patient underwent short process incus vibroplasty (using the Med-El Vibrant Soundbridge device), followed at a suitable interval (six weeks) by stapes surgery. The main outcome measures were: pure tone audiometry, functional gain and monosyllabic word recognition scores.
RESULTS: Post-operative pure tone

OBJECTIVE: To explain the pathophysiology of the hearing loss in Ménière's disease (MD).
BACKGROUND: In a previous report, we described a dramatic recovery of hearing in 12/31 patients with MD using antiviral (AV) drugs. The hearing loss in the remaining 19 patients with a longer history of MD remained unchanged or else worsened. Vertigo control was complete in the group with improved hearing but poorer in the group with greater hearing loss (and a longer MD history). Since achieving the recovery of hearing and control of the vertigo using AV drugs in these patients with a shorter history (≤2

Hearing aids have fundamental disadvantages: (1) stigmatization of the patient; (2) the sound is often found to be unsatisfactory due to the limited frequency range and undesired distortion; (3) in many patients, the ear canal fitting device generally necessary leads to an occlusion effect; (4) acoustic feedback when amplification is high. Conventional hearing aids transmit sound into the ear canal via a small microphone. Sound has the disadvantage of requiring high output sound pressure levels for its transmission. This along with the necessary miniaturization of the loudspeaker as well as th
