Abnormalities of ambulatory 24-hour heart rate in diabetes mellitus.

Twenty-one normal subjects and 64 diabetics with varying severity of autonomic damage underwent 24-h ambulatory EKG monitoring. No diabetics had the "sick sinus syndrome," and the frequency of arrhythmias was no higher than in the normal subjects. The diabetics had higher mean hourly heart rates, and with increasing autonomic damage there was reduction in diurnal heart rate variation. The mean waking and sleeping heart rates were higher in the diabetics. The maximum heart rates were not significantly different, but the minimum heart rates were significantly higher in the diabetics. These previ…

Antepartum sinusoidal and decelerative heart rate patterns in Rh disease.

A review was made of the data on 42 cases of Rh disease that resulted in the birth of a live infant after 33 weeks' gestation. On 12 occasions, antepartum monitoring of fetal heart rate (FHR) showed a sinusoidal and/or decelerative heart rate pattern. All 12 infants were anemic at birth; only one was born acidotic. One infant died neonatally. Monitoring of FHR identified the severely affected infant more reliably than did the Liley classification. Within the same Liley group, infants with an abnormal heart rate tracing had lower values of hemoglobin at birth than did infants with a normal trac…

Voluntary heart-rate changes mediated by muscle tension and respiration.

20 undergraduates completed heart-rate mediation treatments (isometric exercise, relaxation, hyperventilation, and hypoventilation) with and without feedback. Heart rate increased during tension, decreased with relaxation, and changed even more with feedback. During hyperventilation the heart rates were lower than during hypoventilation, and this difference was even greater during trials with feedback. This paradoxical finding was attributed to the shallowness of the breathing. Additional data from an experiment on voluntary heart-rate control (n = 31) without feedback and one with biofeedback…

Control of heart rate during movement in acute myocardial infarction.

Among patients with acute myocardial infarction and a normal heart rate and blood pressure, a high incidence of sympathetic overactivity was recorded during transport. The combined administration of atropine and sotalol had no significant effect on the mean maximum heart rate on movement. However, this drug combination prevented excessive slowing of the heart rate. Sotalol caused a significant reduction in the mean maximum heart rate on movement. The side-effects were minimal. 10% of patients who received sotalol required atropine for the correction of bradyarrhythmia.

[Fetal heart rate patterns at death in utero (author's transl)].

In a comparative description of norm- and anencephal fetus typical heart rate patterns at death in utero are demonstrated and the imminent danger is described by 5 characteristic parameters. As several figures show heart rate patterns are not influenced by fetal deformation and immaturity. The sinusoidal oscillation is not imparative in prefinal stage.

Fetal heart rate patterns in patients with intrauterine growth retardation.

Fetal heart rate recordings were examined in 953 patients with special reference to the different patterns occurring during labor. After delivery the infants were examined with special emphasis on evidence of growth retardation, defined as birthweight below the 10th percentile for the gestational age. Heart rate patterns of growth-retarded infants were compared with those of normal newborns. A statistically significant increase in early, late, and variable decelerations was noted in infants with growth retardation. The difference in loss of beat-to-beat variation was not statistically signific…

Effects of heart rate and atropine on 'dual AV conduction'.

In patients with evidence of dual AV conduction, a premature atrial depolarization is normally conducted via a fast conducting pathway with … ied in 14 patients, with a history of supraventricular paroxysmal tachycardia, at the patient's own heart rate, at different paced heart rates, and after the administration of atropine. In 11 patients the 'break' phenomenon could be elicited during sinus rhythm,; in 3 when the heart rate was accelerated. The effective refractory period of the fast conducting …

Two cases of continuous fetal heart rate monitoring in twins.

This report describes two cases of twin pregnancy in which continuous heart rate monitoring of both twins was successfully carried out during labour. In both cases monitoring permitted early diagnosis of fetal distress and both mothers were delivered by caesarean section. Continuous fetal heart rate monitoring permits diagnosis of fetal distress in the second twin much earlier than conventional methods.

Depression and heart rate variability in patients with stable coronary heart disease: findings from the Heart and Soul Study.

CONTEXT: Depression is associated with low heart rate variability (HRV) in patients following myocardial infarction, suggesting that alterations in the autonomic nervous system may contribute to the adverse cardiac outcomes associated with depression. Whether depression is associated with low HRV in patients with stable coronary heart disease (CHD) is not known. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between major depression and 24-hour HRV in patients with stable CHD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Cross-sectional study of 873 outpatients with stable CHD recruited from outpatient clinics…

Heart rate, respiratory rate, apnoeas and peripheral arterial oxygen saturation in healthy term neonates during quiet sleep.

AIM: This study compiled percentiles for cardiorespiratory parameters in healthy term neonates during quiet sleep. METHODS: We enrolled 215 healthy term neonates born at Hannover Medical School, Germany, between October 2011 and March 2013. They were prospectively observed on the maternity ward at a median age of two days using six-hour recordings of pulse oximeter plethysmography, oxygen saturation, thoracic breathing movements and electrocardiogram during sleep in a supine position. We examined their heart rate, respiratory rate and oxygen saturation during quiet sleep, plus bradycardias, a…

Electronic fetal heart rate monitoring: early neonatal outcomes associated with normal rate, fetal stress, and fetal distress.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test the ability of a clearly defined classification system for electronic fetal heart rate monitoring to predict early neonatal outcome. STUDY DESIGN: All labors of women with singleton pregnancies > or = 32 weeks' gestation electronically monitored at 2 institutions were examined. Tracings in the final hour before delivery were defined as normal, fetal stress, or fetal distress. After delivery, Apgar scores, cord blood gas values, and admission to the neonatal intensive care unit were examined as measures of early neonatal outcome. RESULTS: Among…

Autonomic impairment in advanced heart-failure patients revealed by nonlinear heart rate variability measured during exercise.

Advanced heart failure is characterized by profound autonomic dysfunction, yet resting measures of heart rate variability (HRV) provide limited insight into autonomic adaptability under physiological stress. We investigated whether graded exercise unmasks alterations in cardiac autonomic regulation in patients with advanced heart failure using both conventional and information-theoretic HRV measures. 77 patients with end-stage heart failure with reduced ejection fraction underwent resting and cycle-ergometer exercise testing with continuous electrocardiographic recording. HRV was assessed at r…

Impact of BMI, heart rhythm, and heart rate on photon-counting detector virtual coronary calcium scoring.

The study evaluates the impact of body mass index (BMI), heart rate and rhythm on coronary artery calcium scoring (CACS) derived from calcium-sensitive virtual non-contrast (VNC) series of photon-counting detector (PCD) computed tomography angiography (CTA) compared to true non-contrast (TNC) series. Patients who underwent cardiac imaging with TNC and CTA on a PCD-CT were included. Agatston scores from TNC and VNC images were used to assign CACS risk category. Analyses considered BMI, heart rhythm and heart rate. Distributions were tested for differences between TNC and VNC derived scores and …

The association of heart rate with adverse outcomes and recurrent heart failure hospitalization in peripartum cardiomyopathy.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding predictors of adverse outcomes in patients with peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is essential for risk stratification and prognosis. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between heart rate (HR) at diagnosis and adverse outcomes in PPCM. METHODS: We conducted a multi-center cohort study to identify patients with PPCM (1993-2017) who met the inclusion criteria: left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) <40%, development of heart failure within the last month of pregnancy or within 5 months of delivery, and no other identifiable cause of heart failure …
