BackgroundThe higher mortality rates in patients with Systemic sclerosis (SSc) are related to SSc activity, cardiovascular disease, and neoplasms, among other factors. Our objective was to assess the impact of solid organ neoplasms (SON) and hematological neoplasms (HN) on mortality among SSc patients.MethodsA retrospective, observational comparison of SON and HN-related deaths in SSc patients with those in the general Spanish population was conducted using data from the Spanish Hospital Discharge Database. Binary logistic regression was used to analyze the impact of SSc on mortality risk from

A 65-year-old man with systemic mastocytosis and associated hematological neoplasm (plasma cell myeloma, SM-AHN) received an 18 F-FDG PET/CT for staging. In addition to the typical bone marrow and splenic uptake, PET/CT also showed diffuse 18 F-FDG uptake in the gastric wall. It suggested the involvement of myeloma or mastocytosis. Subsequent histopathologic analysis of gastric biopsy specimens through endoscopy confirmed the diagnosis of mastocytosis involvement.

BACKGROUND: Although cytomegalovirus (CMV) is not considered tumorigenic, there is evidence for its oncomodulatory effects and association with hematological neoplasms. Conversely, a number of experimental and clinical studies suggest its putative anti-tumour effect. We investigated the potential connection between chronic CMV infection in patients with B-lymphocyte (B-cell) malignancies in a retrospective single-center study and extracted relevant data on CMV prevalences and the incidences of B-cell cancers the world over.
METHODS: In the clinical single-center study, prevalence of chronic C

Evaluation of megakaryocyte morphology is difficult but can be essential for the diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and other myeloid neoplasms. We agreed upon descriptions and provided images of megakaryoblasts and of normal and dysplastic megakaryocytes, which were used as a basis for assessing the concordance of expert morphologists in their recognition. We showed a high rate of concordance for the recognition of micromegakaryocytes and confirmed their strong association with hematologic neoplasia, including MDS. Concordance was also found to be good for the recognition of multinu

Myeloid/lymphoid neoplasms with eosinophilia (MLN-eos) are rare hematological malignancies in childhood and limited to isolated case reports in the literature. We discuss the case of an infant who was evaluated for persistent hypereosinophilia and diagnosed with a rare genetic rearrangement; GOLGA4::PDGFRB was previously reported only once in a 13-month-old boy. A literature review of all children with PDGFRB rearrangement was collated in our analysis. The challenges of diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up posed by such a rare genetic disorder with no pediatric guidelines are being discussed.

Immune-related rheumatic adverse effects (rheumatic IAEs) are commonly observed in patients undergoing immunotherapy for solid tumors and hematologic malignancies. The Romanian National Health Insurance House offers all patients free access to oncology medications and has significantly improved in recent years. Here, we present a case of a 69-year-old male patient diagnosed with a bronchopulmonary neoplasm who developed psoriatic arthritis (PsA) after receiving immunotherapy with pembrolizumab, emphasizing the challenges of therapeutic management in this case.

Epidemiological studies for atomic bomb (A-bomb) survivors clearly demonstrated that A-bomb radiation increased the risk of hematological neoplasms, such as acute and chronic leukemia, and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) among survivors. Several studies on MDS among survivors investigated its characteristics, and it seems that MDS among survivors has different features from those seen in de novo MDS and therapy-related MDS. In this short review, we describe the differences of clinical features, chromosomal alterations and genome aberrations among them.

The diagnosis or rare, non-hematologic malignant lesions of the liver may be a challenge owing to the rarity of the disease, and is usually made by histological confirmation. Ultrasound with color Doppler and contrast-enhanced, if required, taking into account the clinical background of the patient, may help to focus the differential diagnosis. In this review, we describe the pathological and ultrasound features of rare malignant neuroendocrine and predominantly epithelioid liver lesions including primary neuroendocrine tumor of the liver, Invasive mucinous cystic neoplasm of the liver, and al

A 72-year-old man with a history of squamous cell carcinoma presented to the Portland VA with forehead discoloration. He was initially diagnosed with actinic damage and prescribed topical treatment. However, he returned to clinic months later with a large, violaceous forehead plaque. Upon biopsy, he was diagnosed with blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN), a rare hematological malignancy. This case report illustrates the importance of keeping BPDCN in the differential diagnosis for ecchymotic plaques that fail to respond to first line therapy.

Mast cell leukemia (MCL) is a very rare subtype of systemic mastocytosis (SM). We have identified 13 such patients (5.9%) among 218 patients with SM seen at our institution between 1994 and 2016. Patients with MCL had poor survival (median 31.6 months); response to various therapies was rare and not durable. Clinical course may be affected by concurrent associated hematologic neoplasm and different genetic profiles. More research is required to decipher this rare and enigmatic SM subtype.

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare and aggressive hematologic malignancy arising from plasmacytoid dendritic cell precursors. BPDCN typically manifests in the skin, but it can also evolve into a leukemic form or be complicated by acute myeloid leukemia, some cases with a preceding myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). We herein report the first case of complete spontaneous regression of cutaneous BPDCN followed by acute monocytic leukemia evolving from MDS. This is also the first reported case of gastric BPDCN invasion.

Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) are two different and common hematological neoplasms. Their coexistence is rare, especially CLL developing in a patient of CML. Till date, only a few cases are reported and all had chronic myeloid leukemia - chronic phase earlier. We report the first case of CLL developing in a patient initially diagnosed in an accelerated phase of chronic myeloid leukemia. The clonality of both CML and CLL was proven by cytogenetic, molecular and flow cytometric studies.

Accessory spleens are usually asymptomatic, although they may cause hematological disorders associated with hypersplenism, usually after splenectomy. Moreover, cases of hypersplenism occurring secondary to enlargement of an accessory spleen with an unaltered normal spleen have been reported. An accessory spleen can also mimic an intra-abdominal neoplasm. We report a case of hypersplenism that occurred secondary to an increase in the size of the accessory spleen, which was located in the mesentery close to the cecum, mimicking recurrence of previously resected renal carcinoma.

Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is the production of blood cells outside the bone marrow, usually occurring as a compensatory response to hematologic stress or marrow dysfunction. Although EMH most commonly presents as diffuse tissue infiltration, it can rarely manifest as a localized solid mass, known as tumefactive EMH, creating a significant diagnostic challenge by mimicking benign or malignant lesions on non-invasive imaging. We report the case of a 47-year-old male with cirrhosis secondary to autoimmune hepatitis, receiving mycophenolic acid, who presented with severe symptomatic anemi

BACKGROUND: Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare and aggressive hematopoietic malignancy characterized by the proliferation of cells resembling mature histiocytes. It typically presents in extranodal sites such as the skin, the gastrointestinal tract, and soft tissues and is often accompanied by systemic symptoms including fever and weight loss. HS occurs de novo or results from transformation/transdifferentiation from other hematological neoplasms, such as low-grade B-cell lymphomas. To date, only four cases of HS arising from marginal zone lymphomas (MZL) have been documented.

BACKGROUND: The assessment of the quality of life (QoL) in hematology-oncology patients is extremely important. The disease and anti-cancer therapy can cause adverse effects, directly impacting the physical and mental condition of the patient and indirectly influencing their social and professional situation. Therefore, a properly performed QoL assessment should take into account all of these aspects. Moreover, QoL assessment has a prognostic value in regard to treatment success and prognosis; therefore, the improvement in the QoL is often one of the goals of therapy.
OBJECTIVES: To identify

IMPORTANCE: Previous studies have shown that uniform pathologic review of all splenectomy surgical specimens reveals new clinically actionable diagnoses only in a minority of cases.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the aggregate of clinical, laboratory, imaging, and pathologic preoperative data is associated with a clinically beneficial pathologic study for routine splenectomy surgical specimens.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This single-center retrospective cohort study included all patients who underwent splenectomy from January 1, 2013, through December 31, 2018, at a single center. Cli

Myeloproliferative neoplasms have a high prevalence and genetic mutations play a role in their occurrence. Determination of these mutations can be valuable in the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of patients. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the mutation of JAK2, CALR, and MPL genes as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. This case-control study was conducted in 2021 on 223 patients with myeloproliferative neoplasm referred to Hiwa Sulaymaniyah Cancer Hospital. The data were collected from three
