"At a Glance:" The Role of Diagrammatic Representations in Eugenics Appropriations of the "Infamous Juke Family".

The case of the Juke family is one of the most notable episodes of the history of eugenics in the USA. The Jukes were initially brought to the fore in the 1870s by a famous investigation that aimed at estimating the interplay of heredity and environment in determining the problems of poverty and crime. This inquiry triggered a harsh confrontation between two polar interpretations of the study, an "environmentalist" one and a "hereditarian" one. It was with the later reassessment of the case made by the Eugenics American Office (ERO) in the 1910s that the controversy was considered closed with …

Intelligence and education: causal perceptions drive analytic processes and therefore conclusions.

BACKGROUND: Educational attainment is associated with many life outcomes, including income, occupation and many health and lifestyle variables. Many researchers use it as a control variable in epidemiological and other social scientific studies, often without specifying exactly what environmental effects or set of personal characteristics is being controlled. Other researchers assume that genetically influenced intelligence drives educational attainment, and think that intelligence is the appropriate control variable. Researchers' different and often unstated causal assumptions can lead to ver

Nonidentical expressions of multiple endocrine neoplasia, type I, in identical twins.

We studied 25-year-old HLA- and blood group-identical male twins who had multiple endocrine neoplasia, type I (MEN I). At the time of initia … e with growth hormone; no nontumorous gland was available for study. Apparently, factors other than heredity may play a role in the expression of MEN I.

Protrusio acetabuli prosthetica.

Protrusio acetabuli prosthetica is a form of hip replacement failure in which intrapelvic component migration occurs. Three degrees of the entity are defined as determined by (1) prosthetic migration medial to the ilioischial line and (2) integrity of the medial acetabular wall. Entities predisposing to protrusio acetabuli prosthetica include overreaming, multiple pelvic perforations, osteopenic bone states, infection, trauma, heredity or acquired bone deficiency states, overactivity, and hypertrophic membrane formation. Treatment of the condition is contingent upon (1) reestablishment of the …

Current research in neuro-epidemiology. Some main trends.

Recent epidemiological research has contributed to the understanding of the nature of common neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis, Parkinsonism, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Viral etiology constitutes the most probable environmental factor in multiple sclerosis, but host-related genetic factors are also involved and determine susceptibility. In disorders like Parkinsonism, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and epilepsy, heredity seems to play a more important role than earlier believed, and segregation analyses indicate polygenic inheritance patterns. The subacute spongiform encep…

Elejalde syndrome - A neuroectodermal melanolysosomal disease: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Elejalde syndrome is a rare neuroectodermal melanolysosomal disease with an autosomal recessive heredity. Patients usually present with silvery-gray hair, neurological abormalities, diffuse skin hypopigmentation and suntanned skin color. CASE PRESENTATION: A 3 1/2-year-old boy presented with hemiplegia since the day before admission. Durig hospital admission, he experienced episodes of status epilepticus and loss of consciousness and underwent mechanical ventilation. The patient had silvery-gray hair, consequently the pathologic evaluation of the hair shaft, revealed enlarged irre…

[Diffuse panbronchiolitis complicated by thymoma: a case report and a review of literature].

OBJECTIVE: To highlight the characteristics of diffuse panbronchiolitis (DPB). METHOD: One patient with DPB confirmed by thorocoscopic biopsy was described and relevant literatures were reviewed. RESULTS: DPB is a chronic lower respiratory tract disease common in Japanese, rare in China, characterized by infiltration of inflammatory cells around bronchioles. Although the etiology and precise mechanisms are under investigation, it is commonly hypothesized that heredity and immunity have a major role in DPB. Symptoms include cough, expectoration, and dyspnea after exercises. Pseudomonas aerugi…

New trends in psychosomatic research.

Advances in physiological psychology and neuroendocrinology, together with epidemiological studies, have added new dimensions to psychosomatic research. Psychological influences still are accepted as exacerbators or trigger mechanisms, if less often as causes. Theories of psychosomatics which connected specific personality profiles with specific psychosomatic illnesses have lost favor, and multifactorial explanations, which include heredity, environment, social class, life stress, endocrines, brain areas, neurohormones, and immunological mechanisms, are new areas of research. Research methods …

Periorbital Hyperpigmentation: A Comprehensive Review.

Periorbital hyperpigmentation is a commonly encountered condition. There is very little scientific data available on the clinical profile and pathogenesis of periorbital hyperpigmentation. Periorbital hyperpigmentation is caused by various exogenous and endogenous factors. The causative factors include genetic or heredity, excessive pigmentation, postinflammatory hyperpigmentation secondary to atopic and allergic contact dermatitis, periorbital edema, excessive vascularity, shadowing due to skin laxity and tear trough associated with aging. There are a number of treatment options available for…

[Currarino syndrome. A rare cause of severe constipation. Case report and literature review].

The association of congenital anorectal malformation, sacral defect and a presacral mass is known as the Currarino syndrome described for th … ation since birth is the leading symptom of this triad, which follows an autosomal dominant mode of heredity. Rectal examination, plain radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging are the main tools for the diagnosis. The medical therapy is poorly successful and, therefore, combined medical and neurosurgical assessment and management for all cases of Currar …

Bovine meroanencephaly and gastroschisis: a macro and microscopic study.

Congenital malformations correspond to one of the main causes of embryonic loss during the gestational process. They result from interaction of several factors such as multifactor heredity, chromosomal and genetic alterations and environmental agents; however, unknown aetiology also can be present. In this article, we have used 10 embryos, from a frigorific area of Dracena, SP, Brazil, which were fixed in Bouin solution for a macro- and micro-scopic description. We could verify the presence of an encephalic tissue mass on the embryo's dorsal cranial area, resulting from the non-formation of pa…

Genetic factors for overweight and CAD.

Obesity is a growing clinical problem reaching epidemic proportions in developed and developing countries. It is associated with several com … ory processes or other as yet unrecognized mechanisms. In this article the authors will outline the heredity of body weight and CAD/myocardial infarction and describe genetic factors involved in the etiology of these diseases. The methods commonly applied for the detection of such factors are described (e. g., animal models, linkage studies, association st …

[The extracellular matrix structure in keratoconus].

PURPOSE: Keratoconus is a non-inflammatory disease characterized by progressive thinning of the central cornea. There are indications for an autosomal dominant heredity. Our purpose was to find correlations between gene expression and structural changes in extracellular matrix components. METHODS: Stromal RNA (keratoconus and comparison) was isolated from corneas, transformed to cRNA and analysed using biochips (Affymetrix). Structural investigations were performed by laser scanning and transmission electron microscopy. RESULTS: In keratoconus corneas there was an upregulation of different e…

[ENT changes in Crouzon's syndrome].

Crouzon's syndrome is a chapter of the craneosynostosis, congenital diseases characterized for the precocious closure of cranial sutures. It represents an autosomal dominant heredity. Recently has been find out that the mutation lies in the short arm of chromosome 10, which causes the alteration of type 2 receptor of growth factor of fibroblasts (FRFG2). Clinically together with the cranial deformities appear frequently malformations in ENT-sphere, but only in 3 percent of all cases has been observed otic changes. We present the case of a young girl of 16, bearing a Crouzon's syndrome, coming …
