BACKGROUND: Compelling evidence indicates that status epilepticus is a prevalent cause of rhabdomyolysis. However, cases of rhabdomyolysis induced by a single seizure accompanied by viral encephalitis are rarely reported. Herein, we present a case of adult Herpes Simplex Encephalitis complicated with rhabdomyolysis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old male was patient presented with fever accompanied by episodes of convulsions, myalgia, and oliguria, which exacerbated the delirium. Routine blood examination showed impaired kidney function and elevated myoglobin (Mb) and creatine phosphokinase (C…

We present the second confirmed report of HSV laryngitis in an adult stroke patient, resulting in complicated airway management issues. This rare presentation of laryngeal HSV in a stroke patient can interfere with speech, language, and swallowing functions and confounds the etiology of these issues, which can impact subsequent management.

We present an atypical presentation of herpes simplex virus infection in a patient with Harlequin ichthyosis, which we attribute to abnormal cornification.

A 4-month-old female infant presented with a vesicular lesion on her left hand present since 1 day. A few days prior to presentation, she had a similar lesion on the lower lip. Two days after presentation, she returned with new lesions on her thorax and upper eyelid. PCR of the vesicle was positive for herpes simplex virus type 1. The transmission to her chest and face probably resulted from autoinoculation, caused by rubbing of the hand on other parts of the body. Transmission of herpes simplex through skin-to-skin contact is a common route of infection in people engaging in contact sports. A…

OBJECTIVE: Nonspecific manifestations and a varied distribution of brain lesions can delay the diagnosis of herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) in neonates. The aim of this study was to report predominant brain lesions in neonatal HSE, and then to investigate the association between pattern of predominant brain lesions, clinical variables and neurodevelopmental outcome.
STUDY DESIGN: A multicenter retrospective study was performed in neonates diagnosed with HSE between 2009 and 2014. Magnetic resonance (MR) images, including diffusion-weighted images, were obtained in the acute and chronic phas…

PURPOSE: To evaluate the quality of life (QoL) in patients with quiescent herpes simplex keratitis compared with control patients without ocular herpes.
DESIGN: Prospective, case-control study.
PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-three patients with a unilateral and relapsing herpes simplex keratitis (HSK group) that was quiescent during evaluation (no acute episode in the past 3 months) and 66 patients with no history of HSK (control group). Both groups were age and gender matched.
METHODS: Three previously validated QoL questionnaires were used in this study: the National Eye Institute Visual Functionin…

BACKGROUND: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a rare but serious neonatal pathogen. Prior to the availability of antiviral drugs the mortality associated with all but localised neonatal infection was high, with 85% of infants with disseminated HSV infection and 50% of infants with encephalitis dying by one year of age. The morbidity in the survivors of multiorgan infection was also high, with up to 50% experiencing long-term neurological sequelae.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of antiviral agents in the treatment of neonatal HSV infections on mortality, progression of disease and neurodevel…

BACKGROUND DATA AND OBJECTIVE: Herpes is a common infectious disease that is caused by human herpesviruses. Several treatments have been proposed, but none of them prevent reactivation of the virus. This article describes the use of photodynamic therapy (PDT) as a treatment for herpes lesions, and reports on four cases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: PDT was used as an adjuvant therapy for the treatment of herpes labialis in four patients. A special type of 0.01% (m/V) of methylene blue solution was applied to the vesicular stage of herpesviral disease and the lesions were irradiated with laser energ

UNLABELLED: The first herpes virus to be described was types 1 and 2, whose denomination is herpes simplex 1 and 2 or HSV-1 and HSV-2. These viruses have specific biological characteristics, such as the ability to cause different kinds of diseases, as well as to establish hosts latent or persistent lifetime infections and also of being reactivated, causing lesions that can be located at the same site of the initial primary infection or close to it. It is suggested that this virus reactivation in the geniculate ganglion may be related to Bell's palsy. In this situation, the viruses that would b…

Toll-like receptors (TLRs)--and their associated signal-transducing proteins--on the surface of cells have been demonstrated to account for most, if not all, of the events associated with bacterial sepsis. Using human cells expressing different TLRs, we demonstrated that the interaction between TLR2 and herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1-2 leads to the production of cytokines. Using peripheral-blood mononuclear cells, we tested the ability of cells from people of different age groups to make cytokines in response to HSV. An examination of the host responses of neonates to HSV indicates that, rather …

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection can be devastating in the neonate. The disease most commonly presents as 1 of 3 clinical manifestations: disseminated visceral infection (with and without central nervous system involvement), isolated meningoencephalitis, and infection limited to the skin, eyes, and/or mucous membranes (SEM). Exposure leading to neonatal infection typically occurs as peripartum vertical transmission, most typically by direct contact with urogenital lesions or infected genital secretions, or as an ascending infection exploiting disrupted chorioamniotic membranes. We present …

Five hundred and twenty consecutive women newly attending a genitourinary medicine clinic who participated in a study of sexual behaviour were also tested for type-specific antibody to herpes simplex virus type 2; 135 (26%) were seropositive, of whom only 29 (21.5%) had had clinical evidence of genital herpes. Seropositive women were much more likely to have a past history of genital herpes (odds ratio [OR] 173). They were also more likely to be black non-UK born (OR 14), aged 30 years or over (OR 6), to have had 6-20 sexual partners (OR 3-4), especially from abroad (OR 12), to be unemployed (…

Localized or regional necrotizing lymphadenitis is an extremely uncommon manifestation of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection. We report a case of necrotizing HSV lymphadenitis in a patient with both common variable immunodeficiency and natural killer cell deficiency and review the literature on this unusual complication of HSV infection.

Within the past decade the management of acute HSV I encephalitis has been improved dramatically by the advent of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a method which has become the gold standard of diagnosis of HSV I encephalitis, replacing diagnostic uncertainties and, avoiding, in particular, invasive brain biopsy. Early detection of HSV II in the neonate is mandatory; however, prevention by Caesarean section and/or prenatal therapy of the mother are for this the best option. Very recently the causative agent of Mollaret's meningitis has proved to be, at least in part, HSV I or II. So far pr

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the presence of IgG antibodies directed to herpes simplex virus (HSV) in the perilymph of patients with Menière disease.
DESIGN: Antibodies to HSV, Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, and measles virus were analyzed in serum and perilymph samples by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Total IgG and albumin in serum and perilymph samples were measured by nephelometer analysis. The relation of specific antivirus IgG in the perilymph vs the serum was expressed as an index.
PATIENTS: Perilymph and serum samples from 7 patients with long-standing, disabling Menière disease …
