BACKGROUND: The early detection of bacterial meningitis is crucial for successful outcome. Heparin-binding protein, a potent inducer of increased vascular permeability, is released from activated neutrophils in severe sepsis.
OBJECTIVE: In this study we investigated whether heparin-binding protein levels in cerebrospinal fluid could be used as a diagnostic marker for acute bacterial meningitis.
DESIGN: One prospective and one retrospective patient cohort from two university hospitals in Sweden were analyzed.
SETTING AND PATIENTS: Cerebrospinal fluid samples were collected from 174 patients

BACKGROUND: Sciatica-related Foot Drop is a peripheral nervous condition that produces a loss of power in the ankle dorsiflexion muscles. Functional electrical stimulation is a modality of electrical stimulation that produces muscle contraction in a functional movement of the limb. This technique was utilized with positive effects in central nervous afflictions but it is not known whether or not it has any influence in motor recovery following peripheral nervous system problems. This study aims to clarify the effects of functional electrical stimulation on foot drop caused by peripheral nerve

Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) is a hallmark manifestation of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a widespread breathing disorder. CIH-treated rodents exhibit activation of the sympathetic nervous system and hypertension. Heightened carotid body (CB) activity has been implicated in CIH-induced hypertension. CB expresses high abundance of olfactory receptor (Olfr) 78, a G-protein coupled receptor. Olfr 78 null mice exhibit impaired CB sensory nerve response to acute hypoxia. Present study examined whether Olfr78 participates in CB-dependent activation of the sympathetic nervous system and hypert

Hot flashes, hormones, and psychosocial factors contribute to insomnia risk in the context of the menopausal transition. Stress is a well-recognized factor implicated in the pathophysiology of insomnia; however the impact of stress on sleep and sleep-related processes in perimenopausal women remains largely unknown. We investigated the effect of an acute experimental stress (impending Trier Social Stress Task in the morning) on pre-sleep measures of cortisol and autonomic arousal in perimenopausal women with and without insomnia that developed in the context of the menopausal transition. Inappropriate sinus tachycardia (IST) is a rare syndrome characterized by a persistent daytime resting heart rate (HR) >100 beats per minute, a mean 24-h HR of >90 beats per minute, with P wave morphology and axis characteristics similar to that of sinus rhythm. IST is associated with symptomatic palpitation described as an abrupt transient acceleration of HR at rest or minimal activity and is often associated with multiple psychosomatic symptoms. Self-sustained contractile activity, i.e., pace-making, is the basic physiological process characterizing the sinus node. The funny current (If) ini

Recent interest in growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) has been further heightened by its association with rheumatic diseases. GDF15 has been extensively studied as a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker. However, no direct evidence currently links GDF15 to primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). In this study, we measured serum GDF15 levels in 151 pSS patients and 61 healthy controls (HCs). GDF15 levels were significantly elevated in pSS patients compared to HCs. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis demonstrated that GDF15 effectively distinguished pSS patients from

This prospective study aimed to investigate the ability of cardiac autonomic nervous system (CANS) activity assessment to predict appropriate implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) during long-term follow-up period. We enrolled patients with CAD and ICD implantation indications that included both secondary and primary prevention of sudden cardiac death. Before ICD implantation CANS was assessed by using heart rate variability (HRV), myocardium scintigraphy with 123I-meta-iodobenzylguanidine (123I-MIBG) and erythrocyte membranes β-adr

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is marked by excessive complement activation, contributing to tissue damage. Complement activation can be detected in many organs including the skin, kidney, and brain. The involvement of the central nervous system is particularly relevant to understanding neuropsychiatric SLE (NPSLE), one of the poorest understood manifestations of SLE for which no biomarkers are available. We studied the levels of complement inhibitors in SLE in relation to disease activity and as possible biomarkers to identify NPSLE. Serum levels of complement inhibitors C1-inhibitor (C1-

Little attention has been given to esophageal disorders in diabetes mellitus. Pathophysiology of esophageal motility disorders (EMD) in patients with diabetes mellitus is multifactorial. The aims of the present study were: (a) to evaluate the prevalence of EMD in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus and (b) to determine the relationship between EMD and autonomic neuropathy as assessed by heart rate variability (HRV). All the patients completed a questionnaire about diabetes characteristics and gastrointestinal symptoms. Conventional esophageal manometry was performed in all patients. HRV was

This study examined the role of sleep disturbances and insomnia in the context of stress reactivity in adolescence. One-hundred and thirty-five 11-18 year olds (Mage = 14.2 years, SD = 1.9, 52% female) completed the Trier Social Stress Test for Children. Salivary cortisol and subjective stress ratings were collected at six time points, and heart rate as well as heart rate variability were measured pre-, during and post-stress induction. Additionally, sleep disturbances and insomnia diagnosis were assessed by a self-report questionnaire and a sleep interview. Robust mixed models investigated i

Inflammation has been suggested to contribute to the pathophysiology of depression. The T cell death associated gene-8 (TDAG8) receptor is a proton-sensing G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) expressed on immune cells in both the CNS and periphery. Previous work has shown modulation of inflammation by the TDAG8 receptor, with pro-inflammatory responses reported in the central nervous system (CNS). Given the link between depression and inflammation, the aim of the present study was to investigate the role of TDAG8 in depression relevant behaviors. Mice deficient in TDAG8 (TDAG8(-/-)) were tested

A key aspect of nervous system development, including that of the cerebral cortex, is the formation of higher-order neural networks. Developing neural networks undergo several phases with distinct activity patterns in vivo, which are thought to prune and fine-tune network connectivity. We report here that human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC)-derived cerebral cortex neurons form large-scale networks that reflect those found in the developing cerebral cortex in vivo. Synchronised oscillatory networks develop in a highly stereotyped pattern over several weeks in culture. An initial phase of increas

Ginseng is one of the most widely used medicinal plants, which belongs to the genus Panax. Compared to uncured white ginseng, red ginseng has been generally regarded to produce superior pharmacological effects with lesser side/adverse effects, which made it popular in a variety of formulation from tea to oriental medicine. Using the prenatal valproic acid (VPA)-injection model of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in rats, which produces social impairrment and altered seizure susceptibility as in human ASD patients as well as mild neural tube defects like crooked tail phenotype, we examined whethe

The incidence of cardiac failure and chronic renal failure is increasing and it has now become clear that the co-existence of the two problems has an extremely bad prognosis. We propose the severe cardiorenal syndrome (SCRS), a pathophysiological condition in which combined cardiac and renal dysfunction amplifies progression of failure of the individual organ, so that cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in this patient group is at least an order of magnitude higher than in the general population. Guyton has provided an excellent framework describing the physiological relationships between c

The relationship between autonomic nervous system activity (ANA) and coronary vasoreactivity during transient myocardial ischemia was determined in patients with vasospastic angina (VA). ANA was measured by power spectral analysis of heart rate variability and humoral factors following intravenous infusion of insulin in 24 patients with VA and 6 control patients. Nine (38%) of the VA patients had significant ST segment depression (STD), and 4 of these patients had symptomatic STD. The frequency of anginal episodes in the 9 patients with VA and STD was significantly greater than that in the 15

Functional decrements in autonomic control and reflex activity in the elderly resemble the effects of beta-adrenoreceptor blockade. This arises partly from an age-related decrease in intrinsic beta-adrenoreceptor sensitivity and partly from effector changes associated with degenerative processes such as arteriosclerosis. In the elderly, compensatory adjustments in cardiovascular control result from both sympathetic and parasympathetic dysfunction. The characteristics of aging in autonomic nervous control are examined in relation to the treatment of essential hypertension by beta blockers in th

Twenty-two subjects with Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) electrocardiographic pattern performing agonistic physical activity were referred to our laboratory to assess arrhythmogenic risk (group 1). This allowed us to evaluate a less known aspect, namely that of effects of training on the electrophysiologic properties of the atrium and accessory pathway. This was done utilizing a control group of 10 WPW patients who did not perform agonistic physical activity (group 2). All subjects were symptom free, and without signs of associated cardiopathy if we exclude 1 patient of group 1, who presented mode

Using the method of Park et al. the author studied spontaneous and stimulated NBT reduction by neutrophil granulocytes in the cerebrospinal fluid and blood, and by monocytic-reticular cells in the cerebrospinal fluid of the patients with bacterial and viral meningitis and meningismus. The author performed 333 investigations in 74 patients. Significantly higher mean values of the index of spontaneous and stimulated NBT reduction by the granulocytes and cerebrospinal fluid were observed in cases of bacterial meningitis as compared with the granulocytes of the peripheral blood in healthy subjects

Spasticity is defined as the velocity-dependent hyperexcitability of the stretch reflex that develops after a central nervous system injury. Spasticity is caused by plastic neuronal changes following injury. Current treatments that block spastic muscle contractions do not promote recovery from motor dysfunction. We aimed to confirm that Ia fibre activity suppression, comprising the stretch reflex, reduces spasticity-related hyperreflexia and improves pathological neuronal plastic changes and motor dysfunction. In this study, we created a hemi-transected spinal cord injury mouse model and conti
