Hip arthroscopy: current concepts and review of literature.

Diagnosis and treatment of intra-articular hip problems in young patients present a challenge to hip surgeons. Previous studies have shown t … h the conditions affecting the hip joint were identified. Athletes and other young individuals with hip injuries are increasingly being diagnosed with an ever evolving series of conditions. Many of these conditions were previously unrecognised and thus left untreated, resulting in premature ends to the patients' competitive careers. Hip arthroscopy, as with an …

Emergency department management of selected orthopedic injuries.

Rather than providing an encyclopedic review of extremity injuries, this article reviews selected serious injuries of the extremities that can be missed in the emergency department, either because they are relatively uncommon or because they are subtle in their clinical and radiographic presentation. They include injuries to the scapula, the shoulder, the forearm, the femur and hip, the knee, the tibia (which is the most common long bone fracture), and the ankle and foot. Their various causes include sports injuries, falls, and motor vehicle accidents. Several of these injuries can result in e

Outcomes of the Modified Stoppa Approach in Acetabular Fracture Management: Incidence of Nerve Injuries.

OBJECTIVES: Displaced acetabular fractures are complex injuries that necessitate precise surgical intervention. Obturator nerve injuries occur in approximately 2% of cases. The modified Stoppa approach, offering enhanced exposure of the quadrilateral plate, has gained attraction as an alternative technique for anterior acetabular fractures. However, its proximity to the obturator nerve poses a risk of iatrogenic injury. This study aimed to investigate the incidence of nerve injuries and functional outcomes in patients undergoing the modified Stoppa approach for traumatic acetabular fractures.

ACR Appropriateness Criteria® Acute Hip Pain: 2024 Update.

Acute hip pain can be related to any combination of hip fracture, dislocation, and/or soft tissue injury. These injuries require timely diagnosis to avoid associated complications, such as osteonecrosis or prolonged immobility. Imaging plays a crucial role in the evaluation of these injuries, noting that hip fractures cannot be reliably diagnosed or excluded via physical examination alone. Radiographs are the initial imaging modality of choice for acute hip pain. Several recent studies have evaluated specific scenarios in which cross-sectional imaging (CT and/or MRI) should also be obtained-th

Lower Extremity Injury Rates on Artificial Turf Versus Natural Grass Playing Surfaces: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: No study has provided a comprehensive systematic review of sports injuries on artificial turf versus natural grass. PURPOSE: To … compared with natural grass. High-quality studies also suggest that the rates of knee injuries and hip injuries are similar between playing surfaces, although elite-level football athletes may be more predisposed to knee injuries on artificial turf compared with natural grass. Only a few articles in the literature reported a higher overall injury rate on natu …

Tazemetostat in relapsed/refractory follicular lymphoma: a propensity score-matched analysis of E7438-G000-101 trial outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: American football generates the most sports-related injuries in the United States, with tackling as the leading injury mechanism. Overall injury rate at the collegiate level has been reported as 8.61 per 1,000 athlete exposures (AEs) - twice the rate of high school levels; competition injury rates are reported as high as 36.94/1000 AEs. Traumatic hip dislocation is an uncommon injury typically arising from high-energy axial impact with only 2-5.5% occurring during sports activities. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 22-year-old NCAA Division I football defensive back who experienced

Neglected femoral neck fracture in patient with seizure: a case of a delayed fixation of type 1A fracture in 11-month-old infant.

Fractures of the hip are rare injuries in children, accounting for less than 1 % of all pediatric fractures. Compared with other pediatric skeletal injuries, hip fractures are associated with high complication rates and poor outcomes, most commonly osteonecrosis, as well as non-union and malunion. Although significant trauma is the most common reason of the separation of upper femoral epiphysis, furthermore some cases were reported after seizures. To our knowledge, there is no previous publication in the literature that reports the results of delayed reduction and fixation of transepiphyseal s

Child abuse in infants with proximal physeal injuries of the femur.

OBJECTIVE: Child abuse has been recognized to be a common cause of femur fractures in infants. Fractures of the proximal femoral physis in abused infants have been less emphasized. Our report seeks to highlight this infrequent but clinically important inflicted injury. METHODS: Report of 2 cases and a literature review of fractures of the proximal femoral physis in infants, including the role of abuse in this injury. CONCLUSION: Proximal femoral physeal injuries occur infrequently in infants but often result from abuse. Diagnosis may be difficult due to lack of femoral head ossification befo

Injuries in Irish dance.

Irish dance is growing in popularity and competitiveness; however, very little research has focused specifically on this genre of dance. The purpose of this study was to analyze the types of dance injuries incurred by Irish dancers. A chart review was performed to identify all injuries associated with Irish dance seen in the sports medicine or orthopaedic clinics at the investigators' hospital over an 11-year period. "Injury" was defined as any dance-related pain or disorder that led to evaluation in the clinics. Survey data were also collected from study participants. Ultimately, 255 patients

Trainees With Displaced Hip Fractures Present to Physical Therapy With Primary Complaint of Knee Pain.

Stress fractures of the femoral neck are career-threatening and life-altering injuries that occur frequently in Initial Entry Training (IET) Soldiers. Because of the severity of these injuries, military clinics that serve IET Soldiers have implemented guidelines to direct providers in the management of Soldiers with signs of symptoms of stress fracture. These guidelines focus on Soldiers presenting with a primary complaint of hip pain. The cases described here show two Soldiers who had displaced hip fractures despite having primary complaints of knee pain and no self-reported hip pain. In the

Lateral Compression Fragility Fractures of the Pelvis: Diagnosis, Classifications, and Modern Management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To describe the diagnosis, classification, and modern management of lateral compression fragility fractures of the pelvis. RECENT FINDINGS: Practice patterns are shifting toward early operative treatment of fragility fractures of the pelvis among patients who are unable to mobilize or whose injuries demonstrate occult instability on stress imaging. Early internal fixation appears to decrease pain, facilitate mobilization, accelerate hospital discharge, and minimize morbidity in this population. Lateral compression pelvic ring injuries are the most common type of fragility f

How boots affect the kinematics and kinetics of lower limb joints during walking compared to casual footwear.

Boots are widely used by many people for various purposes, but their impact on gait biomechanics and injury risk is not well understood. This study investigated the effects of boots on walking biomechanics, compared to casual footwear. The lower limb joint kinematics and kinetics of 20 healthy male participants aged 20 to 30 years old were compared during self-paced walking with boots and shoes. The results showed that walking with boots is associated with greater hip extensor (P = 0.009) and ankle dorsiflexor (P < 0.001) moments in early stance, hip power generation (P < 0.001) and knee power

[Bilateral Asymmetric Traumatic Dislocation of Hip Joints].

The authors present a rare case of bilateral asymmetric traumatic dislocation of hip joints, where the left joint was treated conservatively after the reduction, while the right joint, with an acetabular fragment interposition, was treated surgically - by arthroscopically assisted reduction and fixation of an osteochondral fragment of posterior wall of the acetabulum. The female patient healed with no complications, showing an excellent clinical outcome with no signs of instability or limited mobility of hip joints, and also with no signs of para-articular calcification or necrosis of the hip

Septic hip in pelvic fracture with urologic trauma: case report.

Urologic injuries occur in 10% of pelvic fractures and hip sepsis is a rare complication. The symptoms of a septic hip are often not as dramatic when found in the setting of an acute pelvic fracture and may be overlooked. A case is presented with a review of the literature. Early recognition and aggressive surgical debridement are important to prevent the long-term sequelae of septic arthritis.

Bilateral posterior hip dislocations with femoral head fractures.

An unusual case of bilateral posterior fracture-dislocation of the hip (Pipkin Type IV) occurred in a 63-year-old man with Paget's disease of the pelvis. Other injuries included a displaced humeral shaft fracture and patellar ligament disruption. Bilateral cemented total hip arthroplasty was performed to avoid the need for prolonged immobilization. Postoperative low-dose irradiation was used because of the risk of heterotopic ossification.

Posterior Wall Fracture-Dislocation With Traumatic Abductor Avulsion.

The typical injury pattern of a posterior hip dislocation includes posterior wall fracture, capsular injury, and muscular strain. This report presents an example of a posterior wall acetabulum fracture-dislocation associated with complete hip abductor tendon and capsular avulsion from the femur. The patient was found to have an unstable hip despite a small posterior wall fragment due to the extensive soft tissue injury. This was repaired. The patient had improvement in function initially, but ultimately required repair of the hip abductor tendons. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is
