Lower Extremity Compartment Syndrome Due to Capillary Leak Syndrome Following 60% Total Body Surface Area Burn Injury.

Lower extremity compartment syndrome (LECS) following burn injury in the absence of circumferential burns is rare. Capillary leak syndrome (CLS) is a condition characterized by systemic capillary hyperpermeability and can be triggered by the multisystem inflammatory response seen in extensive burns. The resulting intravascular fluid loss into the interstitial space can elevate compartment pressures and contribute to the development of compartment syndrome. In the case presented here, the patient developed LECS in the setting of severe burn injury with clinical and laboratory evidence consisten

Geographical and Molecular Analysis of Haplotype Variations in Leishmania major Among Infected Iranian Phlebotomus papatasi.

PURPOSE: Leishmania major is main causative agent and Phlebotomus papatasi is only proven vector of Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ZCL) in Iran. Human leishmaniasis is mostly susceptible to climatic conditions and molecular variations of Leishmania parasites within sandflies. METHODS: L. major was analyzed based on geographical, environmental, climatic changes and haplotype variations within P. papatasi. Molecular tools and different geographical aspects were employed using Arc-GIS software for mapping the geographic distribution of samples and other statistics tests. Fragments of ITS-rDNA

Attributes Associated with HIV Risk Behaviors in a Network-Based Study of People Who Inject Drugs.

INTRODUCTION: People who inject drugs (PWID) are often part of sexual and drug use networks. Engaging in unprotected sex or sharing drug inj … ine how network connections evolve over time. CONCLUSION: The analysis identified factors, such as housing instability, that are important in de-termining the observed network ties among PWID in Athens, Greece. Future development of interventions should consider these factors.

"I Smoked That Cigarette, and It Calmed Me Down": A Qualitative Analysis of Intrapersonal, Social, and Environmental Factors Influencing Decisions to Smoke Among Youth Experiencing Homelessness.

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 70% of youth experiencing homelessness smoke cigarettes; many try to quit and are interested in formal smoking c … ant to quit smoking. Interventions directly targeting social determinants of stress (e.g., poverty, housing instability, food insecurity) and linkages to supportive services are needed. Complementary strategies to address stress coping and nicotine dependence (intrapersonal context) and social smoking norms (social and environmental context) are also necessitated.

A Scoping Review of Current Social Emergency Medicine Research.

INTRODUCTION: Social emergency medicine (EM) is an emerging field that examines the intersection of emergency care and social factors that influence health outcomes. We conducted a scoping review to explore the breadth and content of existing research pertaining to social EM to identify potential areas where future social EM research efforts should be directed. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive PubMed search using Medical Subject Heading terms and phrases pertaining to social EM topic areas (e.g., "homelessness," "housing instability") based on previously published expert consensus. Spatial distribution and determinants of unimproved sanitation facilities among households in Somalia: Using Somalia integrated household budget survey (SIHBS 2022).

BACKGROUND: Access to adequate sanitation remains a critical public health challenge in Somalia, where a large portion of the population relies on unimproved facilities due to persistent conflict, climate shocks, and political instability. This reliance contributes to a high burden of waterborne diseases. This study aimed to assess the spatial distribution of unimproved sanitation and identify its individual and community-level determinants using recent national data to inform targeted interventions. METHODS: This study is a secondary analysis of the 2022 Somalia Integrated Household Budget S

Preventing depression in high-income countries-A systematic review of studies evaluating change in social determinants.

We conducted a systematic review to examine whether changes in social determinants can contribute to the prevention of depression, in order to provide input for policy development and to highlight research gaps. Social determinants were defined as the structural conditions in which people live that shape their health and were categorized according to whether they pertained to societal arrangements, material resources distributed through these arrangements, or social resources that follow from interactions between people. To capture all relevant evidence we included studies that measured depres

Implementing a hospital-based case management intervention for people experiencing homelessness: the navigator program.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) have worse health than the general population, and higher rates of hospitalization. The transition period after discharge from hospital is often challenging for PEH, in part due to loss to follow-up, competing priorities, housing instability, and the absence of a primary care provider. In-patient hospital stays represent a window of opportunity to intervene and connect with patients, supporting them to stay in hospital and complete their treatment plan, identify and address their social needs, and support their transition of care into the comm…

The Sex-Specific Effects of Early Life Adversity and Chronic Psychosocial Stress during Adulthood on Bone Are Mitigated by Mycobacterium vaccae NCTC 11659 in Mice.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic stress is a major burden in our society and increases the risk for various somatic and mental diseases, in part via promoting chronic low-grade inflammation. Interestingly, the vulnerability for chronic stress during adulthood varies widely among individuals, with some being more resilient than others. For instance, women, relative to men, are at higher risk for developing typical stress-related diseases, including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Moreover, the experience of early life adversity (ELA) may increase an individuals' vulnerability for chr

Evaluating Intensity, Complexity, and Potential for Causal Inference in Social Needs Interventions: A Review of a Scoping Review.

IMPORTANCE: Interventions that address needs such as low income, housing instability, and safety are increasingly appearing in the health care sector as part of multifaceted efforts to improve health and health equity, but evidence relevant to scaling these social needs interventions is limited. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the intensity and complexity of social needs interventions included in randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and assess whether these RCTs were designed to measure the causal effects of intervention components on behavioral, health, or health care utilization outcomes. Subcutaneous Mycobacterium vaccae ameliorates the effects of early life adversity alone or in combination with chronic stress during adulthood in male and female mice.

Chronic psychosocial stress is a burden of modern society and poses a clear risk factor for a plethora of somatic and affective disorders, of which most are associated with an activated immune status and chronic low-grade inflammation. Preclinical and clinical studies further suggest that a failure in immunoregulation promotes an over-reaction of the inflammatory stress response and, thus, predisposes an individual to the development of stress-related disorders. Therefore, all genetic (i.e., sex) and environmental (i.e., early life adversity; ELA) factors facilitating an adult's inflammatory s
