Menkes' Kinky Hair Syndrome (MKHS) comprises an array of clinical manifestations including hair shaft abnormalities, epidermal hypopigmentation, and progressive cerebral degeneration that are transmitted as an X-linked recessive disorder affecting copper transport pathways in primarily young males. The oral manifestations of MKHS are scantly reported to include the presence of gingival enlargement and delayed eruption of primary teeth. Previous reports have shown the association between familial spastic paraplegia and hypopigmentation of the skin. A family is reported in which three siblings presented with progressive spastic paraparesis and cerebellar ataxia. All the siblings had large hyperpigmented naevi of the lower extremities while none of the unaffected members had a skin lesion. A definite association appears to exist between heredo-familial ataxias and disordered skin pigmentation, but the exact mechanism remains unclear.

The mechanism responsible for the hypopigmentation which follows pityriasis versicolor (P.V.) infection has not yet been satisfactorily explained. This work was done in order to study the effect of Malassezia furfur on the decomposition or the utilization of the amino acid tyrosine in vitro. No effect could be noted, which points to the assumption that the effect of the causative fungus of P.V. on melanogenesis is most probably due to the blocking of melanine synthesis by one of the product of M. furfur metabolism without using tyrosine.

Experimental autoimmune vitiligo was induced by intradermal injection of mushroom tyrosinase emulsified in complete Freund's adjuvant in female C57BL/6 mice. The onset of vitiligo was characterized by hair hypopigmentation and total melanocyte depletion in the basal layer of the epidermis. Oral administration of mushroom tyrosinase prevented the expression of mushroom tyrosinase induced experimental autoimmune vitiligo. Based on the results it is likely that oral administration of mushroom tyrosinase may have practical implications in vitiligo.

A 5-year-old girl had a papulo-squamous dermatosis arranged in a Blaschko line pattern of 1 month's duration. The skin lesions were asymmetrically distributed bilaterally on the face, neck, trunk, and limbs. Histologically there was a lichenoid infiltrate with foci of spongiosis. The dermatosis cleared spontaneously with hypopigmentation 16 months later. Lichen striatus usually occurs in a solitary and unilateral fashion. Its diffuse and bilateral distribution is an uncommon presentation.

The authors report on a family with X-linked ocular albinism. Examined were one of three affected males and eight females. Six women were carriers and showed iris retroillumination and typical abnormalities of the fundus. The patchy or striated hypopigmentation of the retinal pigment epithelium is thought to be due to random inactivation of the paternal or maternal X-chromosome respectively. The pattern of affection however represents a nonrandom embryological developmental pattern of the retinal pigment epithelium.

Two adolescent females presented to outpatient clinic with isolated, non-scaly, asymptomatic hypopigmented macules and patches on the arm(s). Both cases had Wood's lamp exams notable for extralesional punctiform coral-red perifollicular fluorescence on the back and faint intralesional enhancement. In one case, biopsy was performed and deemed consistent with progressive macular hypomelanosis. The patient had complete response to antimicrobial therapy and sun exposure.
