The Perception of History: Seeing Causal History in Static Shapes Induces Illusory Motion Perception.

The perception of shape, it has been argued, also often entails the perception of time. A cookie missing a bite, for example, is seen as a whole cookie that was subsequently bitten. It has never been clear, however, whether such observations truly reflect visual processing. To explore this possibility, we tested whether the perception of history in static shapes could actually induce illusory motion perception. Observers watched a square change to a truncated form, with a "piece" of it missing, and they reported whether this change was sudden or gradual. When the contours of the missing piece

The bodily self and its disorders: neurological, psychological and social aspects.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The experience of ourselves as an embodied agent with a first-person perspective is referred to as 'bodily self'. We pres … irically investigated by multisensory stimulation paradigms to alter the bodily self. The resulting illusions have promoted the understanding of complex disturbances of the bodily self, such as out-of-body experiences. We discuss the role of interoception in differentiating between self and others and review current advances in the study of body integrity i …

Perceiving surfaces in depth beyond the fusion limit of their elements.

An isolated dot appears double outside a small disparity range called Panum's fusional area. In random-dot stereograms (RDSs), however, this doubling, or diplopia of dot elements is not evident at any disparity. Nevertheless, depth is perceived up to disparities that greatly exceed Panum's fusional limit. Either one is unaware of dot diplopia at disparities exceeding Panum's fusional limit or the fusion limit is extended. To examine these possibilities, we developed a novel RDS in which dichoptically color-coded dots have a distinctive color when fused, and return to their intrinsic colors whe

Eyes wide apart: overestimating interpupillary distance.

Our ability to perceive many aspects of the human face is so acute that some would propose that we possess specialised face-processing mechanisms. One example of this exquisite performance is our ability to discriminate differences in the lateral separation of the eyes in pairs of otherwise identical faces-see Kemp et al (1990, Perception 19 531-543). However, we have found that our ability to estimate our own interpupillary distance (IPD) shows no such accuracy. Subjects were asked to indicate, without undue rumination, their own IPD and, by way of control, the distance from the bridge to the

The Pulfrich phenomenon and its alleviation with a neutral density filter.

A case is described in which a presumed vascular accident resulted in long-standing visual difficulties in both reading and the analysis of vectors of moving objects. Clinical examination revealed minimal right optic atrophy with a relative superior altitudinal visual field defect associated with a positive Pulfrich effect. A partial head turn to the right in association with paresis of saccades and pursuit eye movements to the right was also evident. Spectacles for distance which incorporated a neutral density filter before the left eye were prescribed. These practically eliminated the Pulfri

Pulfrich pendulum phenomenon in patients with a history of acute optic neuritis.

The Pulfrich phenomenon is a stereoillusion in which a pendulum swinging at right angles to the line of gaze appears to be describing an elliptical path when absorbing filters are placed in front of one eye. We used two sets of polaroid glasses as adjustable filters. A spot on a modified oscilloscope served at a pendulum bob. Twenty-nine former patients with a history of optic neuritis and visual acuities of greater than or equal to 6/6 in both eyes and twenty-two normal subjects underwent examinations. The patients showed pathological recordings which separated them from the control subjects.

Splitting the Unity of Bodily Self: Toward a Comprehensive Review of Phenomenology and Psychopathology of Heautoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Heautoscopy refers to a pathological experience of visual reduplication of one's body with an ambiguous sense of self-location and a disturbing sensation of owning the illusory body. It has been recognized to occur in the course of strikingly diverse psychiatric and neurological disorders, such as schizophrenia, space-occupying lesions, frequently of the temporal or parietal lobes, migraine, epilepsy, and depression. The literature on the subject suffers from numerous conceptual inconsistencies, scarcity of clinical data, and a lack of theoretical integratory framework that could e

A systematic review and meta-analysis on the use of tactile stimulation in vection research.

Vection is classically defined as the illusory perception of self-motion induced via visual stimuli. The utility of vection research lies in its potential to enhance simulation fidelity, as measured through presence, and reduce the probability that motion sickness symptoms occur. Studies have shown a multimodal interaction of various sensory systems in facilitating vection, and the utility of co-stimulating some of these sensory systems along with the presentation of visual stimuli have been reviewed. However, a review on the use of tactile stimulation in vection research appears to be missing

[Obligatory and facultative symptoms of the Alice in wonderland syndrome].

The Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS), as described by Todd in 1955, denotes a variety of self-experienced paroxysmal body schema disturbances (obligatory core symptoms of the AIWS) which may co-occur with depersonalization, derealization, visual illusions and disorders of the time perception (facultative symptoms of the AIWS). The name comes, of course, from Lewis Carroll's 1865 novel "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", which is believed to have been inspired by Carroll's own migraine experiences documented as early as 1856. Recent studies of the AIWS occurring as somesthetic migraine aura …

Moving cast shadows induce apparent motion in depth.

Phenomenally strong visual illusions are described in which the motion of an object's cast shadow determines the perceived 3-D trajectory of the object. Simply adjusting the motion of a shadow is sufficient to induce dramatically different apparent trajectories of the object casting the shadow. Psychophysical results obtained with the use of 3-D graphics are reported which show that: (i) the information provided by the motion of an object's shadow overrides other strong sources of information and perceptual biases, such as the assumption of constant object size and a general viewpoint; (ii) th…

The role of the adjacency between background cues and objects in visual localization during ocular pursuit.

Subjects used eye movements to pursue a light target that moved from left to right with a velocity of 15 deg s-1. The stimulus was a sudden five-fold decrease in target intensity during the movement. The subject's task was to localize the stimulus relative to either a single stationary background point or the midpoint between two points (28 deg apart) placed 0.5 deg above the target path. The stimulus was usually mislocated in the direction of eye movement; the mislocation was affected by the spatial adjacency between background and stimulus. When an auditory, rather than a visual, stimulus wa

Secondary mania in a patient with delayed anoxic encephalopathy after carbon monoxide intoxication caused by a suicide attempt.

We report herein a female patient presenting with delayed anoxic encephalopathy after carbon monoxide (CO) intoxication. Five months after she attempted suicide in her car using burning charcoal, she showed manic symptoms including aggressive behaviors, irritability, decreased total sleep time, increased energy and sexual interest, and hyperactivity, as well as illusions and visual hallucinations related to bugs, certain animals, monsters and her ex-husband. Fluid-attenuated inversion recovery and T2-weighted images in brain magnetic resonance imaging showed white-matter hyperintensity in the …

Psilocybin impairs high-level but not low-level motion perception.

The hallucinogenic serotonin(1A&2A) agonist psilocybin is known for its ability to induce illusions of motion in otherwise stationary objects or textured surfaces. This study investigated the effect of psilocybin on local and global motion processing in nine human volunteers. Using a forced choice direction of motion discrimination task we show that psilocybin selectively impairs coherence sensitivity for random dot patterns, likely mediated by high-level global motion detectors, but not contrast sensitivity for drifting gratings, believed to be mediated by low-level detectors. These results a…

Meningeal hyperperfusion visualized by MRI in a patient with visual hallucinations and migraine.

A 41-year-old patient with a history of migraine but with no history of seizures had intermittent prolonged and variable complex visual hallucinations and illusions lasting 9 days, accompanied by unilateral headache. Electroencephalography during these visual symptoms revealed occipital epileptic discharges. Distinction between focal migrainous attacks and ictal phenomena was difficult. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a lesion in the right visual cortex probably related to low perfusion and hyperemia of meningeal vessels, representing the rarely described transient MRI changes associated wit…

Techniques for improving ear definition in microtia reconstruction.

Surgeons involved in microtia repair recognize the difficulty in creating a natural appearing ear. One key to successful reconstruction is to provide sufficient relief between the helix, scaphoid fossa and antihelix to create the illusion of thin skin overlying thin cartilage. Problems such as thick skin, hair-bearing skin and poor-quality cartilage serve to frustrate the surgeons attempt to achieve the desired result. Surgical techniques to improve cartilaginous framework definition in microtia repair are discussed.

Prevention--how misuse of a concept undercuts its worth.

Some health leaders and researchers have launched mass prevention programs without sound biomedical groundwork. They have oversold the benefits of prevention and underestimated the secondary effects. Some have forced nonmedical concerns into the medical model. Others have blurred the distinctions between prevention and other measures such as screening or therapy. Some have transferred responsibility for disease to the victim. A few have imputed magical powers to certain symbols of prevention, in order to create an illusion of control.

[General principles of lip surgery].

A successful lip reconstruction gives a shape illusion and re-establishes physiological function. We must be able to respect static and dynamic function and the axiom "use of lip to repair lip defect". Local flaps provide optimal tissue to replace the lip in the surrounding structures, to respect aesthetic subunits and commissural function, to give a neuro-muscular continuity respecting fibers direction and mucosal quality. If extra-labial tissue is necessary, the use of the same principles enables the best compromise in shape and function as possible.

Is Overconfidence a Risk Factor for Excessive Trading?

Gambling and trading involve similar risks and can be practiced excessively. No study has addressed cognitive distortions in excessive trading during decision-making in experimental task, though the illusion of control is well established in gambling. Overconfidence, closely related to the illusion of control, may be a cognitive factor in excessive trading. Overconfidence is a construct including overestimation, overplacement and overprecision. This study investigated the relationship between overconfidence in simulated financial decision-making involving technical analysis and the likelihood
