Locally Affine Diffeomorphic Surface Registration and Its Application to Surgical Planning of Fronto-Orbital Advancement.

Metopic craniosynostosis is a condition caused by the premature fusion of the metopic cranial suture. If untreated, it can result into brain growth restriction, increased intra-cranial pressure, visual impairment, and cognitive delay. Fronto-orbital advancement is the widely accepted surgical approach to correct cranial shape abnormalities in patients with metopic craniosynostosis, but the outcome of the surgery remains very dependent on the expertise of the surgeon because of the lack of objective and personalized cranial shape metrics to target during the intervention. We propose in this pap

Interpretation module for screening normal ECG.

This work concerns the development of a module for automatic recognition of normal ECGs, i.e. those whose waves morphology do not suggest physiopathological or structural heart alterations. Such a unit constitutes the central part of an administrative system under development which will aid in the management of ECG testing in the primary care delivery level in Chile. This system greatly contributes to the optimal allocation of resources in order to increase the test delivery coverage and to reduce the social and private costs involved. A main feature of the system is that it operates through t

A methodological approach for deep learning to distinguish between meningiomas and gliomas on canine MR-images.

BACKGROUND: Distinguishing between meningeal-based and intra-axial lesions by means of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings may occasionally be challenging. Meningiomas and gliomas account for most of the total primary brain neoplasms in dogs, and differentiating between these two forms is mandatory in choosing the correct therapy. The aims of the present study are: 1) to determine the accuracy of a deep convolutional neural network (CNN, GoogleNet) in discriminating between meningiomas and gliomas in pre- and post-contrast T1 images and T2 images; 2) to develop an image classifier, based

Automated patient-derived noise power spectrum estimation in abdominal CT: a preliminary validation.

Background.Established methods are available for measuring the noise power spectrum (NPS) in computed tomography (CT) by using uniform phantoms. However, in clinical practice, direct estimation of this metric from patient images is desirable for continuous image quality monitoring and protocol optimization.Methodology.An automated workflow was developed through the integration of liver segmentation with TotalSegmentator, optimized selection of square patches in potentially homogeneous regions using a greedy algorithm, and NPS computation employing the PyLinac library. CT images from five patie

Toward Optimized Intravoxel Incoherent Motion (IVIM) and Compartmental T2 Mapping in Abdominal Organs.

PURPOSE: To quantitatively assess the bias in the intravoxel incoherent motions (IVIM)-derived pseudo-diffusion volume fraction (f) caused by the differences in relaxation times between the tissue and fluid compartments, and to develop a two-dimensional (b-value-TE) fitting approach for simultaneous T2 and IVIM parameter estimation along with an optimal acquisition protocol for the relaxation-compensated T2-IVIM imaging in the liver. METHODS: Simulations were conducted to investigate the TR- and TE-dependent bias in f when using the IVIM model, and to evaluate the applicability of the 2D T2-I

Short T2 imaging using a 3D double adiabatic inversion recovery prepared ultrashort echo time cones (3D DIR-UTE-Cones) sequence.

PURPOSE: To investigate high contrast imaging of short T2 tissues with a three-dimensional double adiabatic inversion recovery prepared ultrashort echo time Cones (3D DIR-UTE-Cones) sequence. METHODS: The sequence used two sequential adiabatic inversion pulses to suppress signals from long T2 tissues, followed by multispoke UTE acquisition to detect signals from short T2 tissues. The two adiabatic inversion pulses are identical with a center frequency located at the water peak, but the spectral width is broad enough to cover both water and fat frequencies. The feasibility of this technique wa

Volume fusion for two-circular-orbit cone-beam tomography.

By using the Feldkamp-Davis-Kress (FDK) algorithm, we can efficiently produce a digital volume, called the FDK volume, from cone-beam data acquired along a circular scan orbit. Due to the insufficiency of the cone-beam data set, the FDK volume suffers from nonuniform reproduction exactness. Specifically, the midplane (on the scan-orbit plane) can be exactly reproduced, and the reproduction exactness of off-midplanes decreases as the distance from the midplane increases. We describe the longitudinal falling-off degradation by a hatlike function and the spatial distribution over the object domai

Defect-adaptive landmark detection in pelvis CT images via personalized structure-aware learning.

Accurate localization of anatomical landmarks from pelvic CT images is crucial for preoperative planning in orthopedic procedures. However, existing automatic methods often underperform when facing defective bone structures, which are common in clinical scenarios involving trauma, resection, or severe degeneration. To address this challenge, we propose DADNet, a defect-adaptive detection network that incorporates personalized structural priors to achieve accurate and robust landmark detection in defective pelvis CT images. DADNet first constructs a structure-aware soft prior map that encodes t

Liver lesion segmentation in ultrasound: A benchmark and a baseline network.

Accurate liver lesion segmentation in ultrasound is a challenging task due to high speckle noise, ambiguous lesion boundaries, and inhomogeneous intensity distribution inside the lesion regions. This work first collected and annotated a dataset for liver lesion segmentation in ultrasound. In this paper, we propose a novel convolutional neural network to learn dual self-attentive transformer features for boosting liver lesion segmentation by leveraging the complementary information among non-local features encoded at different layers of the transformer architecture. To do so, we devise a dual s

Enhanced tuberculosis detection using Vision Transformers and explainable AI with a Grad-CAM approach on chest X-rays.

Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, remains a leading global health challenge, especially in low-resource settings. Accurate diagnosis from chest X-rays is critical yet challenging due to subtle manifestations of TB, particularly in its early stages. Traditional computational methods, primarily using basic convolutional neural networks (CNNs), often require extensive pre-processing and struggle with generalizability across diverse clinical environments. This study introduces a novel Vision Transformer (ViT) model augmented with Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (G

Vision transformer-enabled chest CT analysis for enhanced tuberculosis diagnosis in clinical settings.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of illness and mortality worldwide, particularly in resource-constrained regions where timely diagnosis is critical for effective treatment. Chest computed tomography (CT) offers detailed visualization of lung structures and can reveal subtle abnormalities such as cavitations, consolidations, and nodular lesions that are often missed in chest radiographs. However, the scarcity of annotated TB datasets and the heterogeneity of disease manifestations present major challenges for developing robust computer-aided diagnostic systems. To address this, we pro

Image quality in CT thorax: effect of altering reconstruction algorithm and tube load.

Non-linear properties of iterative reconstruction (IR) algorithms can alter image texture. We evaluated the effect of a model-based IR algorithm (advanced modelled iterative reconstruction; ADMIRE) and dose on computed tomography thorax image quality. Dual-source scanner data were acquired at 20, 45 and 65 reference mAs in 20 patients. Images reconstructed with filtered back projection (FBP) and ADMIRE Strengths 3-5 were assessed independently by six radiologists and analysed using an ordinal logistic regression model. For all image criteria studied, the effects of tube load 20 mAs and all ADM

SPGAN Optimized by Piranha Foraging Optimization for Thyroid Nodule Classification in Ultrasound Images.

In this research work, Semantic-Preserved Generative Adversarial Network optimized by Piranha Foraging Optimization for Thyroid Nodule Classification in Ultrasound Images (SPGAN-PFO-TNC-UI) is proposed. Initially, ultrasound images are gathered from the DDTI dataset. Then the input image is sent to the pre-processing step. During pre-processing stage, the Multi-Window Savitzky-Golay Filter (MWSGF) is employed to reduce the noise and improve the quality of the ultrasound (US) images. The pre-processed output is supplied to the Generalized Intuitionistic Fuzzy C-Means Clustering (GIFCMC). Here,

This work proposed a liver cancer classification scheme that includes Preprocessing, Feature extraction, and classification stages. The source images are pre-processed using Gaussian filtering. For segmentation, this work proposes a LUV transformation-based adaptive thresholding-based segmentation process. After the segmentation, certain features are extracted that include multi-texon based features, Improved Local Ternary Pattern (LTP-based features), and GLCM features during this phase. In the Classification phase, an improved Deep Maxout model is proposed for liver cancer detection. The ado

MCUa: Multi-Level Context and Uncertainty Aware Dynamic Deep Ensemble for Breast Cancer Histology Image Classification.

Breast histology image classification is a crucial step in the early diagnosis of breast cancer. In breast pathological diagnosis, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have demonstrated great success using digitized histology slides. However, tissue classification is still challenging due to the high visual variability of the large-sized digitized samples and the lack of contextual information. In this paper, we propose a novel CNN, called Multi-level Context and Uncertainty aware (MCUa) dynamic deep learning ensemble model. MCUa model consists of several multi-level context-aware models to le
