BACKGROUND: Femoral cartilage thickness has been used as an indicator for immobilization and unloading in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). However, conflicting results have been reported on this subject.
OBJECTIVES: (i) To determine femoral cartilage thickness alterations after prolonged immobilization, (ii) to demonstrate the effect of the daily standing or ambulation time on the cartilage and (iii) to analyze the predictors of the femoral cartilage in patients with SCI.

The decision to apply spinal motion restriction should be based upon assessment findings. Mechanism of injury is a consideration, but ultimately the decision should be made on objective physical exam findings. The patient in the scenario has a significant mechanism of injury and a potentially distracting forearm fracture. However, was the pain from the fracture enough to distract him from participating in the exam and giving reliable answers? Did he need to be collared and boarded? When in doubt, or when local protocols are ambiguous, err on the side of caution.

This study describes biosorption of chromium (VI) by immobilized Spirulina platensis, in calcium alginate beads. Three aspects viz. optimization of bead parameters, equilibrium conditions and packed column operation were studied and subsequently modeled. BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients and 7% of these cases are due to immobility secondary to a neurological impairment. Many guidelines are available to guide clinicians dealing with medical or surgical patients. 5-Benzylidene-2-thiobarbituric acid (BzTBA), a pyrimidine derivative, was used to modify the surface of silica gel-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane (Si-Cl) via chemical immobilization to produce a new pyrimidine silica phase (Si-BzTBA). This work describes the chemical mechanisms governing transport and reduction of hexavalent chromium in soils of a contaminated industrial waste landfill. Groundwater and soil analyses indicate that the main source of chromium is a slag heap essentially consisting of mill tailings. A flow injection (FI) enzymatic system, based on the use of immobilized salicylate hydroxylase in glass beads, was developed for the determination of salicylate. Salicylate hydroxylase and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) are used to convert salicylate to catechol.
