Immunological, clinical, and pathological investigations were conducted on a horse with lymphosarcoma. The immunological status was investigated by measuring the level of antibodies by single radial immunodiffusion test and the ability of lymphocytes to proliferate in response to mitogens. Multiple immunological abnormalities were noted in this horse. They were; (1) decreased IgM, IgG, and IgA levels in the serum despite hyperproteinemia; (2) increased in-vitro spontaneous lymphoproliferation which reflects augmented mitosis; (3) decreased lymphoproliferative response to T cell stimulants (e.g

Changes involving the immune system may be instigators of, or consequent upon, disorders in other systems in the natural history of gestosis. The extent of the immune 'disorder' may not correlate with the severity of the disease as manifest in either eclampsia or fetal death. A number of variables, e.g. hormonal and genetic, could affect any immunological trigger mechanism or any secondary altered immune response. Thus attempts to find an immunological factor in gestosis that operates in all cases may prove unrewarding. Certain matings, immunogenetic constitutions, or certain feto-maternal imm

The influence of nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs on immunologic reactions of the humoral type (agglutinins, hemolysins) and of the cellular types (blast test, transplantation test), and on the course of immunologically nonspecific inflammatory reactions(xylene inflammation, pleurisy, granulation test) has been studied. Virtually regardless of chemical structure (indomethacin, mefenamic acid, acetylsalicylic acid, chloroquine), the drugs of this group had no influence on humoral responses, but a distinct influence on the delayed type of cellular responses and on immunologically nonspecific r

A comparison of the results of repeated immunological surveys with the notification of morbidity and mortality to pertussis and parapertussis revealed direct dependence and simultaneously confirmed the effectiveness of Czechoslovak vaccine. Immunological surveys should be continued in spite of the fact that morbidity of pertussis is low at present, because immunological surveys may lead to timely detection of shortcomings in the quality of vaccination and vaccine. The results after 14 years of systematic vaccination and revaccination and consequent follow-up to the state of immunity in the pop

Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the spine and sacroiliac joints with unidentified etiology closely associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Recent studies have reported that immunological and oxidative stress factors are implicated in AS pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate the oxidative and immunological factors in AS patients with or without MetS compare to control group. Real-Time PCR measured expression level of cytokines, transcription factors and related miRNAs. In addition, Th17 and Treg frequencies and cytokines secretion were evalu

BACKGROUND: Despite the fact that trophoblasts and cancer are both immunogenic, they are able to escape from host immunosurveillance, and the precise mechanisms involved in this process are surprisingly similar in both situations.
METHODS: A literature review of studies on immunological changes occurring during normal pregnancy and cancer was performed.
RESULTS: Loss or downregulation of classical HLA antigens as well as the presence of non-classical HLA-G molecules, a Th2 cytokine activity shift, secretion of immunosuppressive factors and blocking antibodies and finally induction of apoptos

A patient with meningitis due to Cryptococcus neoformans had high titers of cryptococcal antigen in her lumbar cerebrospinal fluid after six months of antimicrobial therapy. Antifungal therapy was discontinued after improvement in immunologic parameters occurred. Cryptococcal antigen was no longer detectable in lumbar cerebrospinal fluid eight months after stopping all therapy. Because the course of cryptococcal meningitis is quite variable and cryptococcal polysaccharide is immunosuppressive, recovery of immunologic function may have been coincidental with resolution of the infection rather t

Systemic rheumatic diseases represent a heterogeneous group of conditions associated with significant morbidity and substantial healthcare burden. Their clinical course varies widely and is influenced by genetic, immunologic, and environmental factors. Despite advances in pharmacotherapy, conventional immunomodulatory and immunosuppressive treatments often remain insufficiently effective or lose efficacy over time. The identification of novel molecular targets is crucial to enable more precise and effective therapies. Advances in understanding pathogenic signaling pathways have led to the deve

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a chronic, inflammatory disease with heterogeneous clinical features. The pathogenesis of PsA involves a complex interplay of genetic, immunologic, and environmental factors, leading to the activation of the immune system and subsequent inflammation. Over the past decade, the understanding of the immune mechanisms underlying PsA has advanced significantly, particularly regarding the role of the interleukin-23/T helper 17 pathway in the disease process. Guselkumab, a novel IL-23 inhibitor, has emerged as a promising therapeutic option for PsA, offering an alternativ

Pediatric-onset mixed connective tissue disease is among the rare disease entities in pediatric rheumatology and includes features of arthritis, polymyositis/dermatomyositis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and systemic sclerosis. Accurate recognition and diagnosis of the disease is paramount to prevent long-term morbidity. Advances in the genetic and immunologic understanding of the factors involved in the etiopathogenesis provide an opportunity for improvements in prognostication and targeted therapy. The development of a multinational cohort of patients with mixed connective tissue disease wo

Lung involvement in rheumatologic diseases has a broad spectrum of clinical and radiological presentations, from acute and inflammatory predominance to chronic and fibrotic lung disorders. Therapy has to be guided by the type of rheumatologic disease, the kind of lung involvement and the risk associated with the clinical state of the patient and prognostic factors. Although several therapeutic approaches have been used, the best treatment is still not certain; clinical trials are mandatory, which would require a better knowledge of the pulmonary pathogenesis of immunologic diseases. The follow

This paper reviews puerperal metritis in the cow, particularly the complex and multi-factorial pathogenesis characterized by an altered cross-talk among infectious agents, endocrine and immune systems. Uterine infections impair fertility and is one of the main causes of economic losses in dairy production. The early postpartum is a period characterized by an increased exposition to infectious agents and the disruption of the metabolic homeostasis, leading to endocrine and immunologic disorders. Dysregulation of uterine defence mechanisms results in the development of metritis. Because there is

Heart failure patients often develop cachexia, which is an independent factor for survival reduction. Cachexia can be diagnosed when there is loss of more than 6% of the body weight, in the absence of other diseases. Even though its pathophysiology has not yet been completely clarified, various factors seem to be involved, such as reduction in food consumption, gastrointestinal tract abnormalities, immunologic and neuro-hormonal activation and changes in the relationship between anabolic and catabolic processes. Since there is not specific therapy for heart failure-induced cachexia, management

The rates of eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders appear to be increasing. The most common of these is eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) whi … that EoE is a food-antigen driven process. In vitro and microarray studies have identified specific immunologic factors underlying EoE pathogenesis. Other gastrointestinal manifestations of food intolerances/allergy include food protein induced enterocolitis syndrome.

Polymorphous light eruption is the most common photodermatosis, with a prevalence of as high as 10-20% in Western Europe and in the USA. It starts during the second and third decades of life. Although not life-threatening it can severely impair the quality of life, in particular during leisure activities and in outdoors workers. Polymorphous light eruption belongs to the group of so-called idiopathic photodermatoses. This term denotes dermatoses that occur in otherwise healthy individuals from exposure to sunlight or artificial light without the intervention of an exogenous photosensitizing ag

Psoriasis vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that is marked by a complex interplay of dendritic cells (DCs), T-cells, cytokines, and downstream transcription factors as part of a self-sustaining type 1 cytokine network. As integral players of the immune system, DCs represent antigen-presenting cells that are crucial for efficient activation of T-cells and B-cells. DCs have also been linked to distinct chronic inflammatory conditions, including psoriasis. In the setting of psoriasis therapy, DC/T cell interactions serve as a potential target for biologic response modifiers. Here we

In the past, Crohn's disease (CD) has been understood primarily as an immunologic disorder characterized by an abnormal T-cell response. Recent in vitro and in vivo data suggests that CD may instead be precipitated by innate immune dysfunction resulting from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Some reports have demonstrated a defective immune response in a variety of other cellular components, including neutrophils, monocytes and dendritic cells. Recent studies of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) in CD, aiming to stimulate the innate immune system with

Idiopathic CD4+T-lymphocytopenia (ICL) is a syndrome characterised by the depletion in the CD4+T-cells but without evidence of HIV infection. Aside from low CD4+lymphocyte counts, the immunologic findings in these patients are distinct from the abnormalities found in HIV infection. There are numerous reports of ICL associated with different diseases and clinical conditions. Opportunistic infections, mostly seen in HIV patients are the most common among them. We describe two patients without risk factors for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, each of whom presented with cryptococcal

Peristomal skin complications are the most common reason ostomy patients visit an outpatient wound, ostomy, and continence nursing service. Prevention and management of peristomal skin complications are critical components of ostomy care. Identifying risk factors for the occurrence of peristomal skin complications according to types of injury and clinical features can help optimize assessment and management approaches. Treatment can further be addressed based on etiology - chemical injury (irritant contact dermatitis, pseudoverrucous lesions, and encrustations); mechanical injury (pressure/she

We present the case of dual adult celiac disease and liver disease with portal hypertension (esophageal varices); a percutaneous liver biopsy was compatible with nonspecific reactive hepatitis. Clinically, celiac disease was characterised by poor response to a gluten-free diet, with the development of a biochemical cholestasis and marked malnutrition. Our patient died of cerebral hemorrhage, at the age of 50 years, without associated risk factors. The necropsy demonstrated the existence of a nodular regenerative hyperplasia of the liver, splenic atrophy, gelatinous transformation of the bone m
