Localized facial flushing in infancy. Auriculotemporal nerve (Frey) syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Patients with auriculotemporal nerve syndrome (Frey syndrome) have facial flushing, sweating, or both localized to the distribution of the auriculotemporal nerve that occurs in response to gustatory stimuli. In adults, the syndrome usually results from surgical injury or trauma to the parotid gland. The condition is rare in infants, but usually manifests during infancy with the introduction of solid food, thus leading to the misdiagnosis of food allergy by physicians unfamiliar with the syndrome. OBSERVATIONS: We describe 8 children with auriculotemporal nerve syndrome who manifes

Management of maple syrup urine disease in Canada. Committee for improvement of Hereditary Disease Management.

Nine patients with classic maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) and four with variant forms are under care at five treatment centres in the network affiliated with the National Food Distribution Centre for the Treatment of Hereditary Metabolic Diseases (the "Food Bank"). Diagnosis was made by clinicians and not from mass screening programs. MSUD requires complex emergency treatment to prevent severe neurologic damage, but effective management is compatible with normal growth and development. Long-term treatment requires continuous monitoring of the response to diets restricted in branched-chain am

Longitudinal Evaluation from Birth to Adolescence of Soy Protein-Based Infant Formula Compared with Cow Milk-Based Formula and Breastfeeding: A Comprehensive Summary of Findings.

Breastfeeding is widely recognized as the gold standard food for infants. However, many families use infant formulas, including soy-based products, which have not been studied for their long-term safety and developmental effects. The Beginnings Study and the Beginnings Follow-Up Study represent one of the most comprehensive prospective cohorts designed to examine how early infant feeding is related to growth, body composition, cardiovascular, microbiome, and skeletal outcomes, neurodevelopment, and reproductive maturation through adolescence. Conducted in Arkansas, United States, the study enr

[Eosinophilic esophagitis in children. Two case reports].

Eosiniophilic Esophagitis (EoE) is a relatively new disease which was first reported in 1978 but increasingly diagnosed in the last 15 years. Initially EoE was mainly described in children but later also recognized in adults. In infants it presents as a food refusal, failure to thrive and vomiting. In older children and adults symptoms include chest pain dysphagia, oesophageal food impaction and even strictures on endoscopy. The etiology of EoE is often food allergy. Diagnosis is made on biopsies from the oesophagus and by excluding other causes of eosophageal eosinophilia. It is treated by el

Effect of complementary feeding behavior change communication delivered through community-level actors on dietary adequacy of infants in rural communities of West Gojjam Zone, Northwest Ethiopia: A cluster-randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Attaining the recommended level of adequacy of the infant's diet remains a serious challenge in most developing countries. Complementary foods, particularly in developing countries, are inadequate in quality and quantity that can result in adverse health and nutrition consequences in infants. This could be not only because of lack of food but also associated with caregiver's poor knowledge, harmful cultural norms and behaviors on infant feeding. The promotion of optimal complementary feeding through behavior change interventions is a global health priority. However, many of the int

Malabsorption Syndromes and Food Intolerance.

Feeding intolerance is ubiquitous in neonatal intensive care units with as many signs and symptoms as possible diagnoses. Optimizing nutrition is paramount in both preterm and term infants. Determining the cause of feeding intolerance and adjusting nutrition interventions is an important part of the daily care of newborns. This review discusses the role of malabsorption and food intolerance as possible causes of nutrition difficulties in the newborn.

Cronobacter: an emergent pathogen causing meningitis to neonates through their feeds.

The recognition of Cronobacter as a public health concern was raised when powdered infant formula (PIF) was linked to several neonatal meningitis outbreaks. It is an opportunistic pathogen that causes necrotising enterocolitis, infantile septicaemia, and meningitis which carries a high mortality rate among neonates. It has been also linked with cases of infection in adults and elderly. Over the past decade, much focus has been made on developing sensitive and specific characterisation, detection, and isolation methods to ascertain the quality of foods, notably contamination of PIF with Cronoba

Infant feeding patterns affect the subsequent immunological features in cow's milk allergy.

BACKGROUND: The first exposure to food antigens provokes an immune reaction in an infant, its type depending on the quantity and frequency of doses and the age at introduction, and also being influenced by genetic factors. Most infants develop tolerance to food antigens, but in a small minority they provoke adverse symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of breast and formula feeding and other environmental and genetic factors on the subsequent type of cow's milk allergy classified by the presence or absence of immunoglobulin (Ig) E antibodies to cow's milk. METHODS: A cohort of 6209 infan

Cow's milk protein allergy in a neonate presenting with methaemoglobinaemia.

Cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) is the most common food allergy in infants. A previously healthy neonate fed with infant formula presented diarrhoea, vomiting and respiratory distress with cyanosis. Investigations showed thrombocytosis and leucocytosis with lymphocyte predominance. To our surprise blood gas analysis showed metabolic acidosis and a high methaemoglobin level of 33% (normal range <3%). Clinical status, metabolic acidosis and methaemoglobin level returned to normal following fluid resuscitation and methylene blue administration. The neonate was later managed with breast feeding

Oral contraceptives contraindicated for nursing mother.

F.S. Schroeder (Eureka, Montana) asked: Is it wise or advisable for a nursing mother to take oral contraceptives? Answer (by W.N. Spellacy): It is neither wise nor advisable to prescribe oral contraceptives to nursing mothers. This is because the steroid components, as is the case with most drugs, are excreted into the milk. Their effects on the neonate are variable and dose-dependent. For example, an androgen-type progestagen may masculinize a female infant, and steroid metabolites may contribute to neonatal jaundice. Accordingly, most pharmaceutical companies include a Food and Drug Administ

Fluconazole prophylaxis for prevention of invasive candidiasis in infants.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Invasive candidiasis is a serious infection in hospitalized infants that results in significant mortality and morbidity. Fluconazole is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for prophylaxis of invasive candidiasis in patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation but is not approved for use in infants. This review will describe the history of fluconazole use for prophylaxis in infants. RECENT FINDINGS: Limiting fluconazole prophylaxis to infants with risk factors, in addition to low birth weight and early gestational age, reduces the number of infants treated wit

Highly Specific Monoclonal Antibodies Combined with A Multiplex Quantum Dot Microsphere-based Fluorescence Lateral Flow Immunochromatographic Assay for Simultaneous Detection of Vanillin, Methyl Vanillin, and Ethyl Vanillin in Food Samples.

Vanillin (VAN), methyl vanillin (VER), and ethyl vanillin (EVA) are widely used as flavor enhancers in processed foods. Monitoring their levels is essential to prevent overuse or adulteration, especially in infant foods. Herein, a computational chemistry-aided molecular modeling technique was employed to design specific haptens for VAN, VER, and EVA. High-affinity monoclonal antibodies were generated via hybridoma technology with matrix effect-enhanced screening, yielding half-maximal inhibitory concentrations of 22.10, 49.94, and 40.84 ng/mL. A multiplex quantum dot microsphere-based fluoresc…

Awareness of feeding, growth and development among mothers of infants with cleft lip and/or palate.

BACKGROUND: Awareness of feeding among mothers plays an important role in the growth and development of children with cleft lip and palate. Mothers' increased awareness provides the right care and nutrition to these children in order to grow and achieve their developmental milestones. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed at (1) assessing mothers' awareness on breastfeeding and formula-milk feeding, weaning, growth, and development of infants with cleft lip and palate and (2) the relationship of mothers' awareness with their level of education and monthly household income. METHODS: This cross-section

Evolution of infant nutrition.

Homo sapiens has developed during the course of over two million years. The social and physical conditions of life, the availability of milk and infant foods as well as the presence of diseases have all undergone radical transformations from the Stone Age, at first without and then with fire, to the hunter-gatherer, farmer-herder, agricultural and, now, developed societies. These changes in the human environment may have induced modifications in the length of pregnancy, the development of the neonate at birth, the duration of lactation, the composition of breast milk and use of weaning foods a…

[Metabolism and nutrition of young children in a children's home].

Certain parameters of protein and fat metabolism, as well as provision with vitamins A, B1, B2 and mineral substances (calcium, phosphorus and magnesium) were studied in infants aged 1-3 years, at the Tartu Children's Home No. 2. Simultaneously, the infants' nutrition and development were investigated. It was found that the mean parameters of the protein and fat metabolism were within the normal limits, however, vitamin A, B1, D and unsaturated fatty acids deficiency was recorded in the infants studied. Food imbalance, that was greater in spring, led to metabolic disorders, vitamin and mineral

Dietary exposure to pesticide residues and associated health risks in infants and young children - Results of the French infant total diet study.

A total diet study (TDS) was undertaken to estimate the chronic dietary exposure to pesticide residues and health risks for the French infants and young children below 3 years old. As a whole, 516 pesticides and metabolites were analysed in 309 food composite samples including 219 manufactured baby foods and 90 common foods, which cover 97% of infants and young children's diet. These composite samples were prepared using 5,484 food products purchased during all seasons from 2011 to 2012 and processed as consumed. Pesticide residues were detected in 67% of the samples and quantified in 27% of t

Premastication and length for age among children under 24 months in Laos.

Premastication of infant food by caregivers is common in Laos. Premastication is hypothesized to have both positive and negative implications for children, but the net effect of premastication on child health and nutrition is largely unknown because of a lack of research. This study quantitatively describes premastication in 5 provinces of Laos and examines the associations between premastication and the length of young children. We analyzed cross-sectional data from the Laos 2015 Food and Nutrition Security Survey to characterize premastication among children under 2 years of age (n = 1,661) …
