Biochemical features of dietary chloride deficiency syndrome: a comparative study of 30 cases.

The diagnosis in one infant of a severe state of chloride deficiency after ingesting a diet consisting exclusively of a modified cow milk formula containing only 0.5 mEq/100 kcal chloride ion led to the identification of 30 additional infants (age 2.6 +/- 0.7 months) fed the same commercial formula. The total absence of chloride in the urine was used as a biochemical index of subclinical dietary chloride deficiency. Serum and urine values were studied at diagnosis and 10 to 12 days after chloride replenishment, and compared statistically with the values obtained in a control group of 40 infant

Infant colic: empirical evidence of the absence of an association with source of early infant nutrition.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of infant colic remains unknown, despite an abundance of research on the topic. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether breastfeeding has a protective effect in colic's development. DESIGN: A prospective cohort study of 856 mother-infant dyads. Eligible participants included English-speaking adult residents of a region in Ontario, who gave birth, at term, to a live singleton whose birth weight was appropriate for gestational age. Self-administered questionnaires, mailed to mothers at 1 and 6 weeks post partum, requested information on several infant and maternal factors, inc

Allergy march of Chinese children with infantile allergic symptoms: a prospective multi-center study.

BACKGROUND: Allergy march refers to progression of allergic diseases from infantile food allergy to the development of asthma and allergic rhinitis (AR). Evidence come mostly from studies in European countries. This study aimed to investigate allergy march in Chinese children with infantile food protein allergy (FPA) with a special focus on the effect of different formula interventions. METHODS: From 2008 to 2010, 153 infants diagnosed with FPA were recruited in five tertiary hospitals across China. They were randomly treated with amino-acid-based formula or soy-protein-based formula for a pe

Feeding Mode Is Associated with Infant Night Sleep Trajectories During the First Postnatal Year.

Background: Short sleep and formula feeding during infancy are associated with increased risk of childhood obesity. Feeding practices and sleep arrangements vary during infancy and may also be dynamic, yet their impact on infant night sleep duration remains unclear. Understanding these relationships is crucial for formulating recommendations to support breastfeeding and address sleep concerns. Objective: We examined the association between feeding mode and parent-reported infant night sleep duration during the first postnatal year, while additionally evaluating night-weaning and bedsharing as

The role of polyunsaturated fatty acids in term and preterm infants and breastfeeding mothers.

DHA and AA, which are components of breast milk but not infant formulas marketed in the United States and some other countries, are important components of the brain, and DHA is a major component of the retina. Also, many studies have demonstrated advantages of breastfeeding versus formula-feeding on subsequent cognitive and visual function; however, available data are insufficient to justify the conclusion that the presence of DHA and AA in breast milk is partially or soley responsible for the apparent advantages of breastfeeding. On the other hand, many studies of DHA (and AA)-supplemented v…

Limited Amount of Formula May Facilitate Breastfeeding: Randomized, Controlled Trial to Compare Standard Clinical Practice versus Limited Supplemental Feeding.

OBJECTIVES: Breastfeeding is known to reduce infant morbidity and improve well-being. Nevertheless, breastfeeding rates remain low despite public health efforts. Our study aims to investigate the effect of controlled limited formula usage during birth hospitalisation on breastfeeding, using the primary hypothesis that early limited formula feeds in infants with early weight loss will not adversely affect the rate of exclusive or any breastfeeding as measured at discharge, 3 and 6 months of age. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We randomly assigned 104 healthy term infants, 24 to 48 hours old, with ≥ 5%

A digestive cartridge reduces intestinal injury in a murine model of necrotizing enterocolitis.

BACKGROUND: Formula feeding is associated with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a life-threatening gastrointestinal illness affecting premature infants. The presence of undigested fat in enteral formula may mediate NEC severity. The immobilized lipase cartridge (ILC) is an FDA-cleared digestive device that hydrolyzes triglyceride fat in formula into readily absorbable free fatty acids and monoglycerides. We hypothesized that use of a new ILC prototype designed to support increased feeding frequency in infants will reduce NEC mortality and disease severity in a murine model. METHODS: NEC was i

Calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium concentrations in plasma during first week of life and their relation to type of milk feed.

Serial changes in plasma levels of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, alkaline phosphatase, and total proteins have been investigated in 138 healthy, term Caucasian infants. Blood samples were obtained for each infant from cord blood and on day 1 and day 6. The infants were studied in three groups according to whether they were breast fed, received 'Ostermilk No. 1' or 'Cow and Gate V' formulas. Levels of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, alkaline phosphatase, and total proteins did not differ between the groups at birth or on day 1. By day 6 calcium levels were higher and phosphorus levels lower i

Olfactory Cues in Infant Feeds: Volatile Profiles of Different Milks Fed to Preterm Infants.

Background: Smell is determined by odor-active volatile compounds that bind to specific olfactory receptors, allowing us to discriminate different smells. Olfactory stimulation may assist with digestion and metabolism of feeds in the neonate by activation of the cephalic phase response of digestion. Infants' physiological responses to the smell of different milks suggest they can distinguish between breastmilk and infant formula. We aimed to describe the profile of volatile compounds in preterm breastmilk and investigate how this differed from that of other preterm infant feeding options inclu…

Postnatal growth and development in the preterm and small for gestational age infant.

A clear relationship exists between undernutrition, poorer growth and poor development in term and preterm infants. However, preterm infants … point is concerning, i.e. infant boys appear to be at a developmental disadvantage when fed a term infant formula after discharge. A single study has also suggested that dietary intervention can improve brain growth in term and preterm infants with perinatal brain injury. Postpartum immunization with rubella virus vaccine and antibody response in breast-feeding infants.

Women who were susceptible to rubella, whether they had elected to breast-feed or formula-feed their infants, received immunization with subcutaneously administered rubella antibody 27/3 live, attenuated rubella virus vaccine in the postpartum period. The breast-fed or formula-fed infants of these mothers who had been immunized subsequently received active immunization with the rubella antibody 27/3 vaccine at 15 to 18 months of age. A second group of naturally immune women who were seropositive for rubella did not receive immunization after childbirth. However, infants of naturally immune mot
