Study goals were to distinguish between maternal risk factors for fetal versus infant mortality, and to identify which maternal characteristics contributed the greatest risk of mortality overall. This case-control retrospective study abstracted data on more than forty maternal characteristics from 261 prenatal and delivery records: all 26 fetal deaths, all 40 infant deaths and 195 randomly selected surviving births in a high-mortality Healthy Start community. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted. The fetal-mortality population was significantly more likely than the infant-mortali…

Based on steadily increasing rates from the mid-1990s through 2005 (e.g., rates reached a high of 9.3 deaths per 1,000 live births in the 2000-2004 time frame), the Delaware infant mortality initiative began in 2004. The initiative consisted of a synthesis of quantitative analyses and state-led programs at all public health agencies as directed from the Governor's Office. Throughout the first four years of implementation, Division of Public Health (DPH) staff utilized vital statistics data to produce a statewide research agenda that included reviewing vital record reporting procedures, highlig…

From the beginning of national unification (1861) onwards, the process of the decline in infant mortality has been well-known and several explanatory hypotheses have been offered about the time differences in the decline on different territories. Using a still fragmentary and heterogeneous documentary data basis, this article has attempted to outline the evolution of the mortality of children as from the eighteenth century, stressing the permanence of territorial particularities in the long run. Before the beginning of the irreversible decline (as from the second half of the nineteenth century…

BACKGROUND: Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) remains a leading cause of infant mortality. The neonatal period, as a distinct stage within infancy, has been a focus due to its associated mortality burden. We evaluated the global mortality burden and temporal trends of neonatal SIDS attributable to each risk factor from 1990 to 2021, assessed socioeconomic inequalities across these risk factors, and projected these trends through 2035.
METHODS: Data on neonatal SIDS deaths and the proportions attributable to risk factors were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 study. Tempo…

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic inequality in infant mortality in the UK is rising. This study aims to identify contributory maternal and pregnancy factors that can explain the known association between area deprivation and infant mortality.
METHODS: A cohort study was conducted using Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) primary care data between 2004 and 2019 linked to the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD), and infant mortality from the Office for National Statistics death data. Potential maternal and pregnancy contributory factors included: maternal age, prior maternal health conditions, …

Whooping cough (pertussis) is a highly contagious respiratory bacterial infection caused by Bordetella pertussis and is an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in infants. Bordetella parapertussis can cause a similar, but usually less severe pertussis-like disease. Bordetella pertussis has a number of virulence factors including adhesins and toxins which allow the organism to bind to ciliated epithelial cells in the upper respiratory tract and interfere with host clearance mechanisms. Typical symptoms of pertussis include paroxysmal cough with characteristic whoop

BACKGROUND: The literature suggests that 0.9 to 6% of infants who die unexpectedly may have had a metabolic disorder. At least 43 different inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) have been associated with sudden death (SUDI). To date, the frequency of IEM-associated SUDI has not been studied in Brazil. The present study sought to characterize infant mortality related to IEMs known to cause SUDI disaggregated by each of the regions of Brazil.
METHODS: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional, population-based study of data obtained from the Brazilian Ministry of Health Mortality Information System …

The relationship between social disparity and specific causes of infant mortality has rarely been studied. The present study analyzed infant mortality trends according to the causes of death and the inequalities in specific causes of infant mortality between different parental social classes. We analyzed 8,209,836 births from the Statistics Korea between 1995 and 2009. The trends of disparity for cause-specific infant mortality according to parental education and employment were examined using the Cox proportional hazard model for the birth-year intervals of 1995-1999, 2000-2004, and 2005-2009…

Vaccination of female rabbits with cholera protective antigen (CPA) protected their F1 progeny from lethal challenge with Vibrio cholerae. Protection was determined by the choleragenic score and survival rates. Serum and milk IgG, IgM, IgA titres to CPA, cholera toxin, and LPS were determined. At 8 and 20 weeks post-immunization, mothers' milk, sera, and infants' sera showed elevated CPA-specific IgG and IgA, and infants were protected. Mothers' serum and milk antibody remained elevated for 36 weeks. At 26 weeks, mothers were re-bred, but their progeny were swapped and cross-fed. Infants born

BACKGROUND: Infant mortality refers to the death of an infant before their first birthday. In 2021, approximately 3.8 million infants died worldwide. While interventions have reduced infant mortality rate (IMR) globally, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), particularly East Africa, still faces high IMR. Despite many studies, evidence regarding on the impact of spatial effects remain limited. This study aimed to incorporate spatial random effects to identify factors associated with infant mortality.
METHODS: Secondary data analysis was conducted using a total weighted sample of 101,532 infants from DHS …

OBJECTIVES: To describe annual trends in the incidence of stillbirth and infant mortality in Nova Scotia over a 35-year period.
METHODS: A population-based cohort study of deliveries between 1988 and 2022 was conducted using data from the provincial, clinically oriented Nova Scotia Atlee Perinatal Database. All pregnancies ≥200 weeks gestation or ≥500 g were included. Rates of fetal death (per 1000 births) and neonatal and infant mortality (per 1000 live births) were calculated by birth year. Rates were reported for the entire cohort and stratified by birth parent age, birthweight for gestati…

BACKGROUND: Identifying the modifiable risk factors for childhood mortality using population-attributable fractions (PAFs) estimates can inform public health planning and resource allocation in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We estimated PAFs for key population-level modifiable risk factors of neonatal, infant, and under-five mortality in LMICs.
METHODS: We used the most recent Demographic and Health Survey data sets (2010-22) from 48 LMICs, encompassing 35 sub-Saharan African countries and 13 countries from South and Southeast Asia (n = 506 989). We used generalised linear latent

OBJECTIVES: Infants awaiting paediatric heart transplantation (PHT) experience long waitlist duration and high mortality due to donor shortage. Using the United Network for Organ Sharing database, we explored if increasing donor-recipient weight ratio (DRWR) >2.0 (recommended cutoff) was associated with adverse outcomes.
METHODS: Between 2007 and 2020, 1392 infants received PHT. We divided cohort into 3 groups: A (DRWR ≤1.0, n = 239, 17%), B (DRWR 1.0-2.0, n = 947, 68%), C (DRWR >2.0, n = 206, 15%). Group characteristics and PHT outcomes were analysed.
RESULTS: DRWR ranged between 0.5 and 4.
