In 126 patients with relapsing cervicitis or abnormal cytologic findings, aged 13-19 years (12.5% were virgins), the most frequently bacteria were Ureaplasma urealyticum (30.2%), Mycoplasma hominis, and Gardnerella vaginalis (14.3%), and Chlamydia trachomatis (9.5%). In patients with abnormal cytologic findings, Ureaplasma urealyticum was isolated most frequently--5 times in group IIIa after Papanicolaou and 4 times in group IIIb, followed by Mycoplasma hominis 3 times in group IIIa and IIIb each. Koilocytes were found twice in groups IIIa and IIIb each.

Infections observed after gynecologic surgical procedures are polymicrobial and require parenteral broad-spectrum antimicrobial therapy until the patient has been afebrile 24 to 72 hours. Genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is an increasingly common sexually transmitted disease that has been associated with carcinoma of the cervix. Genital warts are easily diagnosed by clinical criteria; however, the more prevalent subclinical infections generally require laboratory diagnosis. Satisfactory methods for culture of HPV do not exist, and cytologic and histopathologic methods are the most widely available diagnostic techniques. Detection of HPV DNA is a more sensitive method, but its role in the clinical laboratory remains to be defined.

Trichomonas vaginalis, a common pathogen in the female genital tract, produces a characteristic clinical picture in women. Less well recognized are the manifestations of Trichomonas infestations of the male genital tract, which include urethritis and chronic prostatitis. Multiple-glass urinalysis and selective use of Trichomonas cultures may improve recognition of this organism in the family practice setting.

Sometimes severe bacterial infections of the hand arise quickly and lead to damage of anatomical structures and loss of function. In this paper pathophysiology and clinical signs are presented. The most important priority in therapy is to prevent the infection from extending to deeper structures in the hand, such as tendon sheaths, and along them to the mid palmar space and Parona's space. The therapy most often indicated is therefore surgical treatment at the very beginning, depending on the severity of pain and swelling.

An account of the nature of enterovirus and enterovirus infections with special reference to experiences encountered in Singapore is presented. The most common of enterovirus epidemic diseases since 1970 is Acute Haemorrhagic Conjunctivitis caused by Coxsackievirus A24 variant and Enterovirus type 70. Enterovirus of various serotypes were isolated from a wide range of illnesses varying in severity throughout the year.
