A Unique Approach to Dissemination of Evidence-Based Protocols: A Successful CAUTI Reduction Pilot.

A unique approach to disseminate an evidence-based protocol for urinary catheter management was led by a staff-driven catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) reduction team in one hospital. The nurseeducators, faculty from a local university, and the facility's clinical nurse leader mentored the team. As an approachto reduce CAUTIs in the transplant care and intensive care units, the team developed an interdisciplinary CAUTIEducation Fair, which provided a safe, nonthreateningenvironment to unlearn prior behaviors and showcompetency in new evidence-based ones.

Informal Networks in Disaster Medicine.

OBJECTIVE: Our study of informal networks aimed to explore information-sharing environments for the management of disaster medicine and public health preparedness. Understanding interagency coordination in preparing for and responding to extreme events such as disease outbreaks is central to reducing risks and coordination costs. METHODS: We evaluated the pattern of information flow for actors involved in disaster medicine through social network analysis. Social network analysis of agencies can serve as a basis for the effective design and reconstruction of disaster medicine response coordina

Does offering pricing information to resident physicians in the emergency department potentially reduce laboratory and radiology costs?

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to establish whether price list information could reduce laboratory and radiological examination costs in emergency departments (EDs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective survey of adult (>16 years old) admissions was conducted at the ED of a university hospital in Belgium. Nine resident emergency physicians were followed for a span of 6 months, which was divided into 2-month periods: control (October and November 2011), intervention (December 2011 to January 2012), and washout (February and March 2012). Laboratory and radiological costs for each of the

It takes two to tango: information-sharing with offspring among heterosexual parents following identity-release sperm donation.

STUDY QUESTION: How do heterosexual parents reason about and experience information-sharing with offspring following identity-release sperm donation? SUMMARY ANSWER: Sharing information about using donor-conception with offspring is a complex process at several levels, with the parent's personal beliefs and the child's responses serving as driving or impeding forces for the information-sharing process. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The overall view of disclosure in gamete donation has shifted from secrecy to openness, but there is still uncertainty among parents concerning how and when to tell the

Roadmap to personalized medicine.

Standard clinical protocols and the concept "one drug fits all" that are currently used to treat illness in many cases are not effective, and strikingly so in the treatment of cancer, where 75% of therapeutic schemes are ineffective. The concept of personalized medicine is that the treatment of the disease is designed on the basis of the individual needs of each patient and the factors that influence their response to different drugs. Individualization of patient care has the potential to generate novel effective therapies, limit the adverse drug effects, create optimal treatments for individu

Use of population health data to refine diagnostic decision-making for pertussis.

OBJECTIVE: To improve identification of pertussis cases by developing a decision model that incorporates recent, local, population-level disease incidence. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort analysis of 443 infants tested for pertussis (2003-7). MEASUREMENTS: Three models (based on clinical data only, local disease incidence only, and a combination of clinical data and local disease incidence) to predict pertussis positivity were created with demographic, historical, physical exam, and state-wide pertussis data. Models were compared using sensitivity, specificity, area under the receiver-operating

Post-disaster victimization: how survivors of disasters can continue to suffer after the event is over.

When public health researchers study the health effects of disasters (whether "naturally-occurring," disasters due to failure of technology, or disasters due to terrorism), some aspects of the post-disaster situation of victims are often overlooked. Social science research has shown that the vast majority of people tend to behave altruistically during and after a disaster. Nevertheless, cases of victimization of survivors do occur. They can include post-disaster victimization of survivors by other individuals (including fellow survivors, opportunistic outsiders, and even unethical aid workers

The prognostic potential of circulating biomarkers for sarcoma patients with pleural dissemination.

Sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of rare and aggressive malignancies and have a propensity to metastasize to the thoracic cavity. While sarcoma lung metastasectomy is an established modality, only scarce information is available about potential prognostic factors for sarcoma patients with pleural dissemination. Accordingly, all consecutive sarcoma patients treated at our thoracic surgery department between 2010 and 2023 with pleural sarcomatosis and/or malignant pleural effusion were retrospectively analyzed. Preoperative circulating biomarker values were collected at the time of first pleur

Understanding invisible pain in the older adult: a content analysis of social media's representation of herpes zoster vaccine.

Herpes zoster (HZ), a common disease in older adults, affects their quality of life. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the blog posts of HZ-related information on social media platforms to analyze the attitudes and behaviors of residents toward the dissemination of health information. This research used content analysis to focus on Weibo, a representative social media in China, to analyze the content of 1866 blog posts related to herpes zoster (HZ) and herpes zoster vaccine (HZV). According to the consistency test by Cohen's Kappa, four themes were identified: (a) sources, (b) tones, (c)

Herpes zoster after splenectomy. A study of patients without malignancy.

Follow-up information was obtained on 102 unselected patients who had undergone splenectomy for nonmalignant disease (ie, trauma, surgical complications, and hematologic indications). In 422 postsplenectomy years, three cases of herpes zoster were observed, two of which were associated with generalized cutaneous dissemination. This incidence is no greater than that reported elsewhere for age-matched normal population. We conclude that in patients without malignancy, splenectomy does not predispose to herpes zoster, but may play a role in cutaneous dissemination.

Importance of social ties in dissemination of Commission on Cancer's synoptic operative report.

In 2020, the Commission on Cancer (CoC) launched templated synoptic element documentation in operative reports (SORs) as an accreditation standard to standardize and document surgical techniques for key portions of cancer operations. The study team identified multi-level factors influencing implementation of CoC's breast cancer SORs, including variations in surgeons' knowledge about the new SOR standard. One identified facilitator of SOR dissemination was social ties. To better understand mechanisms underlying social ties in disseminating breast SORs, we performed secondary analysis of key inf

The Role of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Sensitivity and Information Sharing in Employee Turnover Intentions: A Franco-Moroccan Cross-cultural Mediation Study.

This paper examines the relationship between perceived corporate social responsibility (CSR) and intention to leave the organization through a cross-cultural comparison between France and Morocco. It also explores the roles of CSR sensitivity and CSR information sharing as antecedents, and of person-organization fit (PO-fit) as a mediator of the relationship under study. Two cross-sectional samples were collected: French (n = 243) and Moroccan (n = 234). Invariance and structural equation modeling path analyses were conducted to test the hypothesized model. Results reveal partial scalar (mean)

Evaluation of the information transmission of treatment with dental aligners in social media: empathetic language versus non-empathetic language.

BACKGROUND: Information presented in audiovisual format, is more effective in the retention of information by patients than traditional written methods. On the other hand, empathy in the transmission of information is a crucial element in the relationship between health professionals and patients. This study aimed to determine whether the presentation of information in audiovisual format in an affective and empathetic way, as is done in social networks, improves the knowledge acquired by orthodontic patients treated with aligners. METHODS: 60 participants, which were equally randomized in 2 g

Dissemination and Implementation Approach to Increasing Access to Local Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Resources With Black Cisgender Women: Intervention Study With Vlogs Shared on Social Media.

BACKGROUND: Black cisgender women account for only 2% of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)-eligible people in the United States who use PrEP to prevent HIV. Owing to the low PrEP use, Black cisgender women continue to contract HIV more frequently than women from every other racial group. Intervention efforts that can bridge the link between knowing that PrEP prevents HIV and support with access to PrEP are necessary for Black cisgender women. OBJECTIVE: The purposes of the vlogs through the campaign were to share information about ways to prevent HIV using PrEP and fact-based education and prov

Information, education, and health behaviors: Evidence from the MMR vaccine autism controversy.

In the wake of strong, although later refuted, claims of a link between autism and the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, I examine whether fewer parents immunized or delayed vaccinations for their children and if there was a differential response by mother's education level. Using various controls and a differencing strategy that compares in MMR take-up with other vaccines, I find that the MMR-autism controversy led to a decline in the immediate years and that there were negative spillovers onto other vaccines. I also find evidence that more highly educated mothers responded more strongly t
