BACKGROUND: In online environments, fear of missing out (FoMO) is where individuals become constantly preoccupied with what others are doing online and feel unable to log off in case they miss something. FoMO is a concept associated with the use of online social media (OSM; e.g., Facebook use, Instagram use) and various scales have been developed to assess the concept. One such scale is the Online Fear of Missing Out (On-FoMO) Inventory. The present study translated the On-FoMO Inventory into Turkish and its main aim was to test the validity and reliability of the scale. The secondary aim was

This paper is a response to a recent debate paper in which Aarseth et al. argue that the inclusion of a formal diagnosis and categories for problematic video gaming or Gaming Disorder (GD) in the World Health Organization's 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) is premature and therefore the proposal should be removed. The present authors systematically address all the six main arguments presented by Aarseth et al. and argue that, even though some of the concerns presented in the debate paper are legitimate, the inclusion of GD in ICD-11 has more advantages tha

INTRODUCTION: Impulsivity has been identified to be involved in the development and maintenance of specific Internet-use disorders (IUD). It can be differentiated between relatively stable trait impulsivity and state impulsivity which is dependent on environmental and affective factors such as craving. Following the I-PACE (Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution) model, both trait and state impulsivity may play an interactive role in IUD. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between trait and state impulsivity and symptom severity of Internet-pornography-use disord

Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) among adolescents is a mental health issue associated with multiple levels of influence, including individual development, game design, self-regulation, and the broader offline environment. Drawing on a narrative synthesis of relevant psychological evidence, together with conceptual analysis and normative policy analysis, this paper examines the extent to which China's existing anti-addiction measures correspond to the risk structure of IGD. Existing evidence indicates that a range of individual, environmental, and game-design factors are associated with problema

Health anxiety has been linked with fear and anxiety regarding COVID-19. Higher levels of health anxiety likely increased social distancing and self-isolating during the pandemic. We investigated relations among health anxiety, fear of missing out (FOMO) on rewarding social experiences from social distancing, and consequential levels of problematic smartphone use (PSU) and gaming disorder (GD). We surveyed a broad sample of 812 U.S. and Canadian participants during the pandemic, in late-May 2020, using the Short Health Anxiety Inventory, FOMO Scale, Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version, an

Background and Objective: Since the classification of gaming disorder (GD) by the World Health Organization (WHO) as "mental disorder caused by addictive behaviors," there has been controversy regarding whether online game behaviors can lead to mental disorder. This study aims to clarify the correlation between the online game behaviors of college students and anxiety, depression, and executive function of college students in China, from a questionnaire-based investigation. Methods: Based on the whole class random sampling method, a questionnaire survey was conducted among college students in

Problematic smartphone use (PSU) is associated with depression and anxiety disorders. However, it remains unclear which PSU symptoms are the most important contributors to depression, anxiety, and their comorbidity. Therefore, we examined the symptom-level network of PSU and separate and comorbid depression and anxiety. Three regularized partial-correlation networks were estimated for each sample, including the PSU-depression-anxiety (P-D-A), PSU-depression (P-D), and PSU-anxiety (P-A) networks. Three independent Chinese samples encompassing 325 aged 18-36 years, 1047 aged 18-26 years, and 988

Problematic smartphone use (PSU) is shaped by personality traits and emotional states, yet its neural and molecular underpinnings remain unclear. Guided by the I-PACE model, we combined behavioral assessment, task-based fMRI, and whole-brain transcriptomics to investigate how dispositional greed (DGS) and depressive symptoms (BDI) contribute to PSU. Participants from middle school and university cohorts completed PSU, DGS, and BDI measures and performed a Face-Matching task during fMRI. Behaviorally, higher DGS was directly associated with greater PSU, with BDI partially mediating this link. N

In the digital age, smartphones have evolved into essential tools in contemporary society, raising significant concerns regarding their influence on daily life, particularly among adolescents. This research, drawing on the social-ecological systems theory, explored how smartphone dependence gradually impacted adolescent mental health under the combined influence of family and school environments. This study collected data from 3,770 high school students in China and analyzed it using SPSS along with the PROCESS. The results showed that smartphone dependence positively affected adolescent depres

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The inclusion of gaming disorder as a new diagnosis in the 11th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) has caused ongoing debate. This review aimed to summarise the potential neural mechanisms of gaming disorder and provide additional evidence for this debate.
METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature review of gaming disorder, focusing on studies that investigated its clinical characteristics and neurobiological mechanisms. Based on this evidence, we further discuss gaming disorder as a psychiatric disorder.
RESULTS: The pre

PURPOSE: Problematic Internet Use (PIU) has been associated with emotional difficulties in childhood and adolescence. However, the directionality of this relationship remains unclear due to the lack of terminological consensus and wide variability in prevalence estimates. This systematic review aims to synthesize the longitudinal evidence on the directionality of the relationship between emotional variables (depression, anxiety, emotional dysregulation) and PIU in children and adolescents.
METHOD: Following PRISMA guidelines, five databases were consulted (Scopus, Web of Science, PsycNet, Pro

In response to our study, the commentary by Infanti et al. (2024) raised critical points regarding (i) the conceptualization and utility of the user-avatar bond in addressing gaming disorder (GD) risk, and (ii) the optimization of supervised machine learning techniques applied to assess GD risk. To advance the scientific dialogue and progress in these areas, the present paper aims to: (i) enhance the clarity and understanding of the concepts of the avatar, the user-avatar bond, and the digital phenotype concerning gaming disorder (GD) within the broader field of behavioral addictions, and (ii)

BACKGROUND: Recovery from mental health and behavioral disorders is classically defined as a reduction in symptoms. More recent definitions see it as a process in which individuals improve their health, wellness and other life domains. The inclusion of gaming disorder (GD) in the 11th International Classification of Diseases in 2019 prompted growing interest in GD. However, relatively little is known about recovery from GD, and there is scant literature describing or assessing its course.
OBJECTIVES: This scoping review was designed to explore the state of the art on recovery from GD (e.g., t

Fear of missing out (FoMO) is known to be associated with a decrease in emotional well-being in adolescents. However, few studies have investigated the possible mediating factors between FoMO and emotional symptoms. In this study, we studied the relationship between FoMO and emotional symptoms in a sample of 472 Italian adolescents aged 11-19. In particular, the study investigated the possible mediating role of perceived stress associated with experiences of neglect and negative reactions by other social media users, and social media addiction. Self-report measures were used. Results show that
