Objective: Although efforts have been made to study mechanisms and mediators of posttraumatic growth (PTG - positive sequelae of coping with trauma), little has been done to investigate PTG as a concept in the context of complex PTSD, a disorder recently delineated in ICD11. This article considers PTG in relation to complex PTSD, primarily as associated with childhood sexual abuse. Method: Using clinical case material and available literature, we explore the emergence of PTG in the treatment of patients with complex PTSD and examine factors contributing to its appearance. Results: Despite exte

Borderline personality disorders are complex clinical states with highly polymorphic symptoms and signs, leading to delays in their diagnosis and treatment. All international classifications emphasize certain clinical criteria such as unstable identity and interpersonal relationships, feelings of emptiness or boredom, and pathological impulsiveness. The prevalence is about 2%, with a female-male sex ratio of 2 or 3 to 1. Both adolescents and adults may be affected There is a high risk of suicide, addictive behaviors, eating disorders, and criminality. These individuals frequently have a histor

PTSD occurs in a small but significant number of people who experience life-threatening events. When a disorder occurs, it can have severe and long-lasting effects on a person's ability to work and function effectively. Particularly effective treatment interventions give patients the opportunity to synthesize and integrate their traumatic memories. Such strategies increase their ability to more narrowly limit the traumatic event and broaden personal, occupational, and social experiences that are healthy and positive. The results is that, although the traumatic experience may be recalled, it is

Both psychodynamic and social-cognitive theoretical domains have control process models of behavior but with different ideas about the purpose and loci of control. This study examines expressive and defensive behaviors associated with different topics of discourse in the time-limited psychotherapy of a woman treated for pathological grief. Conceptually the study is based on a model of defensive control processes that integrates states of mind and person schemas. Theoretically derived measures of discourse topics, verbal and nonverbal defensive behaviors, emotional disclosure, and states of min

Self-mutilative behavior is common among patients with multiple personality and other dissociative disorders. Nursing staff members face particular challenges in managing these patients because one act of self-mutilation can disrupt the entire inpatient milieu. The authors present an approach to nursing care that focuses on working with patients to understand and develop a specific plan to curtail the self-mutilative behavior.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is highly comorbid with depression and anxiety, creating additional difficulty in treating the conditions and poorer prognosis than BPD alone. Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) and Mentalisation-Based Treatment (MBT) are specialised psychotherapies for BPD that have demonstrated positive effects for reducing BPD symptoms and scores on depression and anxiety measures. Although developed for treating PTSD, Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy is effective for addressing past trauma that is also common in BPD. This systematic review investigated the effect

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to adapt an evidence-based adolescent depression prevention program, Interpersonal Psychotherapy-Adolescent Skills Training (IPT-AST), in collaboration with families, clinicians, and topical experts to maximize its acceptability and fit with the primary care setting.
METHODS: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with adolescents who scored in the subthreshold range on a depression screener at a recent primary care well visit (n=10; Mage=15.13 years, SD=1.72; 60% female; 70% Black, 20% Hispanic/Latino), their caregivers (n=10, 90% femal

Personality disorders (PDs) are prevalent and debilitating conditions characterised by enduring disturbances in self-functioning, affect regulation, impulse control, and interpersonal relationships. Although several evidence-based psychotherapies are available, their accessibility and efficiency remain limited due to long treatment durations, high intensity, substantial dropout rates, and restricted treatment capacity. The purpose of the present paper is to present an alternative developmental and treatment perspective on PDs and to review the available literature on the effects of eye movemen

OBJECTIVE: Clients with relational trauma often face challenges in forming a therapeutic alliance, a primary predictor of psychotherapy outcomes. Unresolved traumatic stress can lead to a passive stance in therapy, manifested as a tendency to seek advice and approval from therapists in order to establish more predictable relational dynamics. This comes at the cost of adequately addressing their own therapeutic needs, which often leads to stagnation, treatment dropout, and frustration with the therapist. We postulated that neither relational nor nonrelational traumas could fully account for pas

INTRODUCTION: Depression may affect 2% to 8% of children and adolescents, with a peak incidence around puberty. It may be self-limiting, but about 40% of affected children experience a recurrent attack, one third of affected children will make a suicide attempt, and 3% to 4% will die from suicide.
METHODS AND OUTCOMES: We conducted a systematic review and aimed to answer the following clinical questions: What are the effects of pharmacological, psychological, combination, and complementary treatments for depression in children and adolescents? What are the effects of treatments for refractory

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is highly disabling and typically runs a recurrent course. Knowledge about prevention of relapse and recurrence is crucial to the long-term welfare of people who suffer from this disorder. This article provides an overview of the current evidence for the prevention of relapse and recurrence using psychological interventions. We first describe a conceptual framework to preventive interventions based on: acute treatment; continuation treatment, or; prevention strategies for patients in remission. In brief, cognitive-behavioral interventions, delivered during the a

We present the organised psychological group interventions for persons with inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerose colitis, Morbus Crohn). The actual bio-psychosocial model of health and illness is used to explain the situation of chronically ill patient as stressful life position and their ways of coping with such, health-related problems. Considering that numerous psychological factors can lead to insufficient illness adaptation and (non) adherence to treatment--and all those--to much more complications and higher use of therapies, we try to develop for group of those patients effective model

Many factors go into a choice of a therapeutic focus: the patient's psychopathology; the therapist's training, countertransference reactions, and ideological beliefs; and, importantly, a decision about what seems most amenable to treatment and change. As a theory, self psychology describes one aspect of the paranoid process; as such, it is an incomplete theory that complements rather than invalidates more classical theories. As a technique, however, it suggests a style and focus conducive to working with paranoid patients, one that is markedly supportive, nonconfrontational, yet also interpret

Few studies have reported long-term follow-up data in adults and even fewer in adolescents. The purpose of this work is to report on the longest follow-up assessment in the literature on treatments for adolescents with social phobia. A 5-year follow-up assessment was conducted with subjects who originally received either Cognitive Behavioral Group Therapy for Adolescents (CBGT-A), Social Effectiveness Therapy for Adolescents--Spanish version (SET-Asv), or Intervención en Adolescentes con Fobia Social--Treatment for Adolescents with Social Phobia (IAFS) in a controlled clinical trial. BACKGROUND: Interpersonal counselling (IPC) derives from interpersonal psycho-therapy (IPT) but is briefer in the number and duration of sessions and is particularly suited to the primary care setting. While depression and other psychological symptoms are not necessarily 'caused' by interpersonal problems, they do occur in a social and interpersonal context. Problem areas commonly associated with the onset of depression are unresolved grief, interpersonal disputes, role transition and interpersonal deficits such as social isolation.
OBJECTIVE: This article discusses IPC and how it can be used

BACKGROUND: Self-harm (SH; intentional self-poisoning or self-injury) is common, often repeated, and associated with suicide. This is an update of a broader Cochrane review first published in 1998, previously updated in 1999, and now split into three separate reviews. This review focuses on psychosocial interventions in adults who engage in self-harm.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of specific psychosocial treatments versus treatment as usual, enhanced usual care or other forms of psychological therapy, in adults following SH.
SEARCH METHODS: The Cochrane Depression, Anxiety and Neurosis

Depression is a prevalent and disabling syndrome characterized by sustained sadness and/or anhedonia, as well as cognitive and physical symptoms. In Parkinson's disease (PD), depression is both common and clinically challenging due to overlapping symptoms and complex etiologic interactions. Major depressive disorder occurs in approximately 17% of PD patients, while clinically significant depressive symptoms affect over one-third. Both PD-specific and general risk factors contribute to this burden, with the latter playing a greater role. Diagnosis is complicated by symptom overlap, prompting re
