A narrative literature review to inform the development of a health threats preparedness framework in Ireland.

INTRODUCTION: Public health emergency preparedness requires capacities and capabilities to respond to a diverse range of health threats. A key objective of Ireland's recent Health Protection Strategy is to enable preparedness, prevention, early detection and optimal response to health threats from all-hazards. We aimed to identify priority areas for inclusion in an evidence-based health threats preparedness framework, using lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, to inform a national health threats strategy and a strengthened emerging health threats function for Ireland. METHODS: We conducted a n…

Antimicrobial use in pig herds in Ireland: analysis of a national database (2019-2023).

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in human and animal pathogens remains a global One-Health threat. The associations between antimicrobial use (AMU) and the evolution and dissemination of AMR bacteria, and their resistance genes, highlight the importance of monitoring and regulating AMU. Here, we present an analysis of national monitoring data of AMU in pig facilities in Ireland from 2019 to 2023 via the recently established National AMU Database. AMU was measured using two metrics (mg per corrected population units (mg/PCU) and defined daily dose (DDDvet/PCU)). Temporal trend models …

Symptomatic glucocorticoid-induced adrenal suppression in the United Kingdom and Ireland: a BPSU study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence and describe the presentation and management of unexpected symptomatic glucocorticoid-induced adrenal … U study is lower than a similar Canadian study. This may indicate that paediatricians in the UK and Ireland are becoming more aware of the potential for GC-induced AS and thus are more proactive to prevent its occurrence. The clinical cases still highlight the need to educate families and healthcare professionals with a view to further reducing the morbid …

Equine Rotavirus A Outbreaks in Ireland (2023-2024): An Epidemiological Investigation and Virus Genotyping.

Equine rotavirus A (RVA) is a major cause of debilitating diarrhoea in neonatal foals globally. The aim of this study was to characterise RVA viruses currently circulating in Ireland and to identify risk factors associated with disease outbreaks. Of the 377 samples submitted during 2023 and 2024, 48 foals from 36 outbreaks were confirmed to be RVA-positive by real-time PCR. The viruses detected were genotyped by VP7 and VP4 gene sequencing. In 2024, the attending veterinary surgeon was contacted, and epidemiological data were collected. These included the vaccination status of the foal's dam a…

Chemical Prioritisation for Human Biomonitoring in Ireland: A Synergy of Global Frameworks and Local Perspectives.

Human biomonitoring (HBM) is a critical scientific tool for assessing human exposure by quantifying chemicals and their metabolites in biological specimens such as blood and urine. This approach provides a comprehensive and accurate evaluation of internal exposures from diverse sources and exposure routes. In Ireland, establishing a national HBM programme requires a systematic chemical prioritisation process that aligns global frameworks with local public perceptions. This study integrates insights from international initiatives such as the European Joint Programme Human Biomonitoring for Euro…

An Assessment of Existing Sport-Related Concussion Guidelines in Ireland: The Need for a United Approach.

In 2014, an Irish parliament white paper called for greater addressing of sport-related concussions (SRCs) in Ireland, requesting the adoption of the Concussion in Sport Group's (CISGs) guidelines and greater consistency in SRC return to play (RTP) management. Ten years later, it is unclear how these requests have been addressed. Recently, the United Kingdom's government centralised guidelines to one SRC document for all grassroots sports. This study aimed to investigate all publicly available SRC guidance in Irish sports and national governing bodies (NGBs) to determine if centralised guideli…

The burden of disease in metachromatic leukodystrophy: results of a caregiver survey in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD) is a rare, autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disease characterised by the progressive loss of motor function and severe decline in cognitive function. Limited information is available on the burden MLD places on patients and their families and the medical and social support these patients need. Three UK-based MLD patient organisations commissioned an online survey, and follow-up semi-structured interviews to describe and quantify these burdens across MLD subtypes, stage of disease (including end of life) and treatment status (untreated, gene t

Comparing characteristics of suicide to non-suicide drug poisoning deaths, by sex, in Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Suicide by drug poisoning is potentially preventable; however, evidence on associated risk factors by sex is limited. AIM: To assist in understanding how individual and social contextual factors, and specific drugs, influence risk of suicide compared to non-suicide drug poisoning deaths, and how this differs by sex. METHODS: Data were extracted from the National Drug-Related Deaths Index. Analysis included univariable and multivariable logistic regression to estimate unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for factors associated with suicide dru

The price of private dental services: results from a national representative survey of Ireland.

INTRODUCTION: Dental services in Ireland are delivered in a mixed public-private system but the majority of dental care is paid for out-of-pocket by individuals. Ireland is not unusual in the global context where public subsidisation for oral healthcare is limited in many countries. This is despite the fact that oral health plays an important role in well-being and despite international evidence on the negative impact of user fees on utilisation of beneficial healthcare. However, there has been little up-to-date assessment of the prices faced by individuals for a range of non-acute care servic…
