The brain is the most metabolically active organ in the body and has a high demand for iron. Iron deficiency impairs brain function and is linked to various neurological disorders. To maintain iron homeostasis, astrocytes respond to iron levels and signal brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMVECs), which regulate iron import into the brain. However, the specific signaling molecules released by astrocytes remain largely unknown. In this study, we addressed this by performing a global proteomic analysis of the secretome of primary mouse astrocytes cultured under iron-deficient conditions. Qu

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is the most prevalent HF phenotype. Iron deficiency (ID), a frequent comorbidity, is associated with a poor prognosis.
METHODS: HFpEF patients included in the prospective acute HF registry of Geneva University Hospitals were included. Patients who received intravenous (IV) iron during the hospital stay were compared with those who did not using a COX proportional hazard model adjusting for baseline imbalances and prognostic factors. The primary endpoint was one-year risk of readmission for acute HF or all-cause death.

Iron deficiency is the leading cause of anemia worldwide. Single oral iron daily supplementation is usually unsatisfactory. We hypothesize dividing the oral iron dose may improve the anemic parameters. To test this hypothesis, forty male Wistar rats were evenly assigned to the following groups (n = 8): Control nonanemic or anemic groups. Anemia was induced by repeated phlebotomy from the orbital plexus under anesthesia for 4 weeks. The anemic rats either received no treatment (IDA group) or received a total oral iron supplementation (7.1 mg/kg/day) for 1 week. Iron was administered in differen

Intravenous (IV) iron is a guideline-recommended treatment for iron deficiency when oral iron is contraindicated, ineffective, or not tolerated, or when rapid iron delivery is necessary. However, evidence suggests that some patients receive less IV iron than needed. This retrospective audit assessed the effectiveness and safety of ferric derisomaltose (FDI), a high-dose IV iron, in 2,468 patients. Efficacy outcomes assessed at 4-12 weeks post-infusion included changes in hemoglobin (Hb) and ferritin, proportion of courses (a course was defined as the treatment episode required to administer on

Iron fortification with food supplements remains the primary dietary strategy for improving iron deficiency anemia (IDA). This study used Antarctic krill protein for fibrillar design to form an Antarctic krill protein amyloid fibril (AKAF). The results indicated that peptides generated by proteolysis were a prerequisite for fibril assembly, forming elongated fibril structures and cross-linking upon heating. During this process, hydrogen bonds were rearranged, forming ordered β-sheet conformations (49.36 ± 0.21%); π-π stacking interactions among aromatic residues contributed to fibril formation

Iron deficiency is a common comorbidity in heart failure (HF) patients, with up to 50% of ambulatory patients with HF affected. Intravenous (IV) iron therapy has emerged as a promising treatment approach for HF patients with concomitant iron deficiency. This review summarizes the current literature on the use of IV iron therapy in HF patients, focusing on its benefits in improving quality of life, and exercise capacity, and reducing HF hospitalizations. However, concerns about the long-term cardiotoxic effects of IV iron, including the risk of iron overload, are also addressed. The review high

Anemia and iron deficiency (ID) are common complications in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), but their underlying causes remain unclear. This study investigated the incidence and characteristics of anemia and micronutrient deficiencies in PDAC patients before initiating chemotherapy. A total of 103 PDAC patients were included, comprising 67 in the palliative and 36 in the adjuvant groups. The overall incidence of anemia was 42.7% (n = 44), with comparable rates in both groups. Normocytic and normochromic anemia were predominant, with mild and moderate cases observed in 32

Iron deficiency (ID) impacts about fifty percent of elderly patients with many symptoms present before iron deficiency anaemia . If left untreated, ID may increase morbidity and mortality. Oral iron is often not tolerated or the absorption is suboptimal. We describe our initial experiences of using high-dose intravenous ferric derisomaltose (Monofer®) infusions of 500 and 1000mg for iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia respectively in the outpatient setting. Rapid correction of laboratory parameters and improvement in common symptoms (such as fatigue) were observed. Intravenous iron may

BACKGROUND: The recent AFFIRM-AHF trial assessing the effect of intravenous (IV) iron on outcomes in patients hospitalised with worsening heart failure who had iron deficiency (ID) narrowly missed its primary efficacy endpoint of recurrent hospitalisations for heart failure (HHF) or cardiovascular (CV) death. We conducted a meta-analysis to determine whether these results were consistent with previous trials.
METHODS: We searched for randomised trials of patients with heart failure investigating the effect of IV iron vs placebo/control groups that reported HHF and CV mortality from 1st Januar

The adult human body contains about 4 g of iron. About 1-2 mg of iron is absorbed every day, and in healthy individuals, the same amount is excreted. We describe a patient who presents with severe iron deficiency anemia with hemoglobin levels below 6 g/dL and ferritin levels below 30 ng/mL. Although red blood cell concentrates and intravenous iron have been substituted every month for years, body iron stores remain depleted. Diagnostics have included several esophago-gastro-duodenoscopies, colonoscopies, MRI of the liver, repetitive bone marrow biopsies, psychological analysis, application of

Chronic heart failure (HF) is often accompanied by systemic iron deficiency (ID). However, effects of ID on cardiac iron status and progression of HF are unknown. To investigate these effects rats underwent LAD ligation to induce post-myocardial infarction HF or sham operation. After 3 weeks the animals from both groups were randomized into three subgroups: control, moderate ID and severe ID+anemia (IDA) by a combination of phlebotomy and low iron diet for 5 weeks. Serum and hepatic iron content were reduced by 55% and 70% (ID) and by 80% and 77% (IDA), respectively, while cardiac iron content

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common nutrient-dependent health problem in the world and could be reversed by commercially available iron supplementation. The form of iron supplement is important due to its toxicity on the gastrointestinal system (GI), so the development of new dietary strategies might be important for the prevention of IDA. It has been shown that plant-based proteins bind to iron and might decrease the free form of iron before absorption and increase iron bioavailability. Thus, we aimed to form lentil derived protein-iron complexes and to test the functional propert

Iron (Fe) homeostasis is essential for plant growth and development, and it is strictly regulated by a group of transcriptional factors. Iron-related transcription factor 3 (OsIRO3) was previously identified as a negative regulator for Fe deficiency response in rice. However, the molecular mechanisms by which OsIRO3 regulate Fe homeostasis is unclear. Here, we report that OsIRO3 is essential for responding to Fe deficiency and maintaining Fe homeostasis in rice. OsIRO3 is expressed in the roots, leaves, and base nodes, with a higher level in leaf blades at the vegetative growth stage. Knockout

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a prevalent yet underdiagnosed condition with a significant impact on quality of life. Oral iron supplementation is often poorly tolerated or yields inadequate response, requiring the use of intravenous iron (IVI) in some patients. Administration of certain IVI preparations has been associated with decreases in serum phosphate levels and clinically significant hypophosphatemia, which has been reported to lead to adverse events including serious fatigue and osteomalacia.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to systematically assess the prevalence
