Forty-two children who sustained a serum bilirubin (SBR) level above 339 mumol/L as newborn infants were assessed at our Growth and Development Clinic to determine presence of sequelae. Only one child (2.3%) had mild sensorineural deafness and one child (2.3%) performed below age-matched standards on psychological testing. As the SBR level rose the psychological scores were lower. Three infants had sepsis associated with the hyperbilirubinaemia. Two (maximum SBR levels of 371 and 366 mumol/L) children were normal (General Cognitive Index (GCI) 117 and 119, respectively) and one child (maximum

INTRODUCTION: Undiagnosed and untreated hyperbilirubinemia in infants may result in Kernicterus Spectrum Disorder and poor prognoses. Rhesus incompatibility and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency are among the known causes of infantile jaundice. This study was designed to define the severity and prognosis in jaundiced infants with Rh incompatibility or G6PD deficiency.
METHODS: A total of 144 term, 2- 14 days old jaundiced infants (bilirubin > 20 mg/dl) with Rh incompatibility(85 infant) or G6PD deficiency(59 infant) were included in this cohort study with 24-month follow-up …

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the outcome of six children with Crigler-Najjar syndrome type I (CNS-I) and report the first three living-related live … bia for which LRLT is a curative treatment when performed at an early age before the development of kernicterus and neurological deficiency. In countries where there is a severe shortage of cadaveric organs, as is the case in Saudi Arabia, LRLT is the optimum treatment modality for this syndrome.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is a prevalent condition worldwide and is caused by loss-of-function mutations in the G6 … ficiency and close monitoring of affected infants are important aspects in neonatal care to prevent kernicterus, a permanent and devastating neurological damage. WHO recommends screening for G6PD activity of all infants in countries with high prevalence of this deficiency. The traditional fluorescent spot test as a screening tool, although low in cost, misses …

Uniform practice guidelines, including developmental assessment and surveillance of infants with SNH, were rare at all levels of healthcare delivery. OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of severe hyperbilirubinaemia in the newborn, and to identify associated clinical and demographic variables, and short-term outcomes.
DESIGN: Prospective, population-based study.
SETTING: UK and Republic of Ireland, between 1 May 2003 and 31 May 2005.
PARTICIPANTS: Infants in the first month of life with severe hyperbilirubinaemia (maximum unconjugated serum bilirubin >/=510 micromol/l).
RESULTS: 108 infants met the case definition, 106 from the UK and 2 from the Republic of Ireland. The UK incidence of severe hyperbilirubinaemia was 7.1/100 000 live

Standard recommendations for evaluating and treating jaundice in term babies include following all babies closely for jaundice, obtaining several laboratory tests in those with early jaundice or bilirubin levels more than 12 to 13 mg/dL (205 to 222 mumol/L), using phototherapy to try to keep bilirubin levels below 20 mg/dL (342 mumol/L), and doing exchange transfusions if phototherapy fails, regardless of the cause of the jaundice. These recommendations are likely to lead to unnecessary testing and treatment of many jaundiced term infants. Because most jaundiced infants have no underlying illn

The paper is concerned with a study of the structure of an intellectual defect in 2 groups of children with intrauteral birth trauma is characterized by a certain dissociation (in a satisfactory speech development and verbal thinking there was an insufficiency of spacial perception). The structure of an intellectual defect in children of the 2nd group (characterized by a bilirubin encephalopathy due to a physiological icterus of the prematurely born) the main feature was a defect of hearing and an underdevelopment of verbal thinking, while as the subject-visual thinking was preserved.

Great advances have been made in the management of Rh erythroblastosis fetalis in the past two decades. Perinatal mortality has been reduced from 16.4% to 3.2%. However, perinatal mortality can only be reduced to zero if Rh erythroblastosis can be eradicated by prevention of Rh isoimmunization. Although prevention of Rh immunization by Rh immune globulin prophylaxis is now a reality, it does not appear that Rh immunization will be completely prevented with a single postdelivery injection. Antenatal treatment plus screening by the Kleihauer technique for massive transplacental hemorrhage may be
