Multicentric aggressive unclassified hematopoietic neoplasm involving the placenta in a pregnant bitch.

Hematopoietic neoplasms are common in dogs; however, their association with pregnancy has not been previously reported in veterinary medicine. This rare occurrence presents a variety of diagnostic, therapeutic, prognostic, and ethical challenges. We report a case of a 3-year-old pregnant Bernese Mountain Dog diagnosed with multicentric aggressive unclassified hematopoietic cancer associated with paraneoplastic hypercalcemia during pregnancy. The dog died 7 days after diagnosis, and at Day 36 of pregnancy before any treatment decision could be made. Post-mortem evaluation, including histology,

Clinical Value of 3D-FLAIR MRI in Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional fluid-attenuated inversion recovery sequence magnetic resonance imaging (3D-FLAIR MRI) has been used in the diagnosis of inner ear diseases. However, the relevance of 3D-FLAIR MRI appearances with multiple features and prognosis of patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) remains unclear. METHODS: This study was a retrospective trial. We recruited 1300 patients with unilateral ISSNHL hospitalized from May 2017 to January 2019. They were divided into four groups according to their 3D-FLAIR MRI appearances: normal (n = 739), inner ear hem

Meniere's disease: evidence of an immune process.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to present further evidence of specific antibodies reactive against bovine inner ear proteins found in patients with Meniere's disease. BACKGROUND: There are a growing number of experimental and clinical features of Meniere's disease that indicate an immune association. Circulating antibodies directed against inner ear proteins have been detected in patients with bilateral progressive hearing loss and Meniere's disease. METHODS: A total of 36 patients with classical Meniere's disease were studied noting the presence of active or inactive, bilateral or unilateral d

Restoring vestibular function during natural self-motion: Progress and challenges.

The vestibular system is integral to behavior; the loss of peripheral vestibular function leads to disabling consequences, such as blurred vision, dizziness, and unstable posture, severely limiting activities of daily living. Fortunately, the vestibular system's well-defined peripheral structure and well-understood encoding strategies offer unique opportunities for developing sensory prostheses to restore vestibular function. While these devices show promising results in both animal models and implanted patients, substantial room for improvement remains. Research from an engineering perspectiv

Current perspectives on galvanic vestibular stimulation in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.

Introduction: Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) is a noninvasive technique that activates vestibular afferents, influencing activity and oscillations in a broad network of brain regions. Several studies have suggested beneficial effects of GVS on motor symptoms in Parkinson's Disease (PD).Areas covered: A comprehensive overview of the stimulation techniques, potential mechanisms of action, challenges, and future research directions.Expert opinion: This emerging technology is not currently a viable therapy. However, a complementary therapy that is inexpensive, easily disseminated, customiza

Aetiology of Ludwig van Beethoven's hearing impairment: hypotheses over the past 100 years - A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Even 250 years after Beethoven's birth, the irrevocable cause of his hearing impairment remains unclear despite multiple publications by different professional groups. This study aimed to analyse the development of the most likely aetiologies during the last 100 years by a systematic review of the relevant medical literature. METHODS: A systematic review of medical literature in PubMed®, PubMed Central®, and Web of Science® for the period 1920-2020 was conducted. Medical publications between 1920 and 1935 were additionally searched manually by review of reference lists. Studies we

Vestibular rehabilitation following surgical repair for Superior Canal Dehiscence Syndrome: A complicated case report.

Superior Canal Dehiscence Syndrome (SCDS) causes auditory and vestibular symptoms. Following surgical repair of the dehiscence, patients often experience dizziness and imbalance. This case report describes a postoperative vestibular exercise program, focusing on the principles of central compensation and habituation, and how it was modified for a patient with delayed progress secondary to strabismus and visual vertigo. A 63-year-old male with history of strabismus eye surgery, right hearing loss, aural fullness, and sensitivity to loud sounds was referred for vestibular rehabilitation (VR). He

Acute labyrinthitis secondary to aural tick infestation.

Aural tick usually menisfests as intolerable otalgia. The severity of pain makes the patient to seek early treatment. Other uncommon symptoms include inner ear dyfunctions such as vertigo and tinnitus. The diagnosis is established by clinical examinaion either by otoscopic evidence of the tick itself, or its fecal remnant. We report a case of patient with acute labyrinthitis features with concurent otoscopic findings of tick fecal material.

A case of labyrinthine fistula by cholesteatoma mimicking lateral canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

Acute peripheral vestibulopathy, of which the chief complaint is positional vertigo, comprises benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), labyrinthitis, labyrinthine fistula, and cerebellopontine angle tumors. Since the typical presentation of labyrinthine fistulas may be sensorineural hearing loss, positional vertigo, or disequilibrium, it is often difficult to distinguish from BPPV or Meniere's disease. Herein we report a 61-year-old female patient with typical symptoms and signs attributable to geotropic type variant of the lateral semicircular canal BPPV on the left side, who eventually

Familial unilateral deafness and delayed endolymphatic hydrops.

Delayed endolymphatic hydrops (DEH) is a unique disorder characterized by fluctuating otologic symptoms in the setting of preexisting unilateral deafness. The symptoms include aural fullness, fluctuating hearing, and/or episodes of vertigo similar to those observed in Meniere disease and may occur ipsilateral or contralateral to the previously deafened ear. In most reported cases, the unilateral deafness has been a profound sensorineural hearing loss with a sudden onset that has been variously attributed to bacterial or viral labyrinthitis, acoustic or cranial trauma, otosclerosis, and congeni

Cerebral larva migrans caused by Baylisascaris sp in pet rabbits.

Cerebral larva migrans was diagnosed histologically in 4 pet rabbits that developed progressive neurologic disease. Larvae of Baylisascaris sp were isolated from brain tissues in 2 rabbits. The clinical syndrome of progressive torticollis and ataxia manifested by these rabbits is commonly associated with otitis and labyrinthitis attributable to bacterial infection; however, the middle ears were normal on radiographic and postmortem examinations. The severe encephalopathy that developed in these rabbits was indicative that just a few Baylisascaris larvae may cause extensive brain injury. During

Clinical detection of acute vestibulocerebellar disorders.

The acute onset of vertigo, nystagmus and postural instability, without brain-stem signs, is commonly attributed to a disorder of the labyrinth, the vestibular, sensory end organ. Identical symptoms can occur, however, with discrete infarctions or hemorrhages involving the central vestibulocerebellum. Whereas acute labyrinthine disorders are usually benign and self-limited, vascular injuries of the cerebellum may produce swelling, compression of the brain stem and acute hydrocephalus one to four days after the onset of symptoms. Therefore it is important to accurately distinguish between labyr
