Annual and spatial variability in endo- and ectoparasite infections of North Sea cod (Gadus morhua Linnaeus, 1758) larvae, post-larvae and juveniles.

A parasitological investigation was performed on a total of 5380 Atlantic cod larvae, post-larvae and small juveniles sampled from the North Sea during a period of five years. The copepod Caligus elongatus (Von Nordmann, 1832) and the nematode Hysterothylacium aduncum (Rudolphi, 1802) were found at a relatively high prevalence of infection (4.6% and 5.2%, respectively). The infection by both parasites showed annual and spatial variability. C. elongatus showed a higher prevalence in 1992 compared to the following years, whereas the prevalence of H. aduncum increased from 1992 to 2001.We observe…

Morphology and ultrastructure of pharyngeal sense organs of Drosophila larvae.

This study provides a comprehensive ultrastructural analysis of the pharyngeal sensory system in Drosophila melanogaster larvae, focusing on the four major pharyngeal sense organs: the ventral pharyngeal sensilla (VPS), dorsal pharyngeal sensilla (DPS), dorsal pharyngeal organ (DPO), and posterior pharyngeal sensilla (PPS). Our analysis revealed 15 sensilla across these organs, comprising four mechanosensory, nine chemosensory, and two dual-function sensilla. We identified 35 Type I neurons (6 mechanosensory and 29 chemosensory) and 6 Type II neurons with putative chemosensory functions. Addit…

Avermectin induces developmental toxicity and immunotoxicity in zebrafish larvae.

Avermectin has been widely used in agriculture and animal husbandry for decades, and its associated environmental problems have raised increasing concerns regarding its safety. This study investigated the developmental and immunotoxicity of avermectin in zebrafish larvae and its underlying mechanisms. The results showed that exposure to 0.15-0.60 μg/mL avermectin for 72 h induced developmental malformations in zebrafish larvae, including decreased heart rate, spinal curvature, and edema. It also significantly reduced the numbers of immune cells such as neutrophils, T cells, and macrophages. At…

Mature Vespa mandarinia larvae continue calling at night.

Animals produce and perceive vibroacoustic signals. Larvae of Vespa hornets generate a rhythmic "rasping" signal by rubbing their mandibles against the cell wall (hereafter calling), a behaviour proposed to function as a hunger signal to workers. Detailed observations, however, exist for only a few Vespa species, and whether calling varies with time of day is unknown. Using workerless laboratory observations of Vespa mandarinia, we recorded group-level calling and found that fifth-instar larvae called throughout both day and night, with a higher calling rate at night than during the day. Only …

Prenatal polysubstance exposure alters behaviour in zebrafish larvae.

Substance use during pregnancy has been linked to various adverse outcomes in infants, including congenital disabilities, neurodevelopmental delays, and long-term effects such as learning difficulties. An additional concern is that newborns are often exposed to multiple substances in utero. The biological consequences of such exposure remain largely unknown. Zebrafish offer an exciting alternative to fill this gap and deepen our understanding of the biological impact of prenatal multidrug exposure. We utilized zebrafish's scalability to expose embryos to some of the most commonly used substanc

Maggot-associated Ignatzschineria larvae bacteremia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Myiases are fly larvae parasitic infections involving host tissues. In humans, myiases generally occur in people with reduced self-care capacity or living in poor hygienic conditions, with wounds serving as an entry point for flies. In addition to direct larvae damage, myiases constitute a risk factor for secondary bacterial infections. CASE SUMMARY: An 81-year-old patient with multiple comorbidities and living in poor hygienic conditions accessed the emergency room of a secondary care hospital in the Varese area following deterioration in his clinical condition and presence of ma…

Assessing learning in mosquito larvae using video-tracking.

Mosquito larvae display a stereotyped escape response when they rest attached to the water surface. It consists in detaching from the surface and diving, to return to the surface after a brief time. It has been shown that this response can be evoked several times, by repeatedly presenting a moving shadow. Diving triggered by a potential danger revealed as a simple bioassay for investigating behavioural responses in mosquito larvae, in particular their ability to learn. In the present work, we describe an automated system, based on video-tracking individuals, and extracting quantitative data of…

The impact of predators of mosquito larvae on Wolbachia spreading dynamics.

Dengue fever creates more than 390 million cases worldwide yearly. The most effective way to deal with this mosquito-borne disease is to control the vectors. In this work we consider two weapons, the endosymbiotic bacteria Wolbachia and predators of mosquito larvae, for combating the disease. As Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes are less able to transmit dengue virus, releasing infected mosquitoes to invade wild mosquito populations helps to reduce dengue transmission. Besides this measure, the introduction of predators of mosquito larvae can control mosquito population. To evaluate the impact of …

Photoinactivation of Aedes aegypti larvae using riboflavin as photosensitizer.

More than half of the global population lives in areas where the Aedes aegypti mosquito is present. Efforts have been made to deal with the population of this mosquito in the larval and adult stages to prevent outbreaks of diseases (Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya, and Yellow Fever). In this scenario, photodynamic inactivation may be an effective alternative method to control this vector population. To evaluate the efficacy of the riboflavin - B2 vitamin - as photosensitizer (PS) in the photodynamic inactivation of Ae. aegypti larvae, different concentrations (0; 0.005; 0.010; 0.025; 0.050; 0.075 an…

Hundreds of LncRNAs Display Circadian Rhythmicity in Zebrafish Larvae.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been shown to play crucial roles in various life processes, including circadian rhythms. Although next generation sequencing technologies have facilitated faster profiling of lncRNAs, the resulting datasets require sophisticated computational analyses. In particular, the regulatory roles of lncRNAs in circadian clocks are far from being completely understood. In this study, we conducted RNA-seq-based transcriptome analysis of zebrafish larvae under both constant darkness (DD) and constant light (LL) conditions in a circadian manner, employing state-of-the-art…

Current Status of Anisakiasis and Anisakis Larvae in Tokyo, Japan.

Anisakiasis is a gastrointestinal disease caused by infection with anisakid nematodes. Anisakis larvae have been listed as distinct food poisoning agents in the manual of Food Poisoning Statistics, Japan since 2013. The reported numbers of food poisoning cases caused by Anisakis larvae are gradually increasing. A total of 94.0% of the causative larvae species were identified as Anisakis simplex sensu stricto (A. simplex), and 4.4% were identified as Anisakis pegreffii, among human-isolated anisakid nematodes examined in Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Public Health, Japan from 2011 to 2018. An…

Cryoprotectant toxicity and hypothermic sensitivity among Anopheles larvae.

Laboratory rearing of mosquitoes is commonly practiced by researchers studying mosquito-borne infectious diseases and vector control methods … both individually and as cocktails. Among first instar, feeding-stage An. gambiae and An. stephensi larvae, cryoprotectant toxicity followed the order of dimethyl sulfoxide > ethylene glycol > methanol. The resulting LD50 values were used as the basis for the development of cryoprotectant cocktail solutions, where formulation optimization was streamline …

Freshly squeezed: anaphylaxis caused by drone larvae juice.

Drone larvae are mostly considered a by-product of beekeeping, but have recently been advo-cated as a high-protein source of food. There are as yet no data concerning their allergenic potential. We report on a 29-year old bee keeper who experienced an anaphylactic reaction following the consumption of a freshly prepared beverage from raw drone larvae. Larvae-specific sensitization was confirmed by prick-to-prick and basophil activation testing. Bee stings and classical bee products including honey and royal jelly were tolerated. This is the hitherto first report on IgE-mediated allergy to dron…
