[Reconstruction of soft tissue defects of lower leg, ankle and foot using sural flap].

Covering soft-tissue injuries on the lower third of the leg, ankle joint and on the calcaneal part of the foot has so far been the domain for free flap use. The distally based superficial sural artery flap with vascular axis of the sural nerve was first described by Masquelet. We treated 31 patients after injuries with this method. No flap failed. Necrosis of the edges affected three flaps. Most flaps showed slight venous congestion. The authors present their clinical experience using this technique. The advantages are the following: the blood supply is reliable, elevation is easy and quick an

Match and training injury epidemiology in elite UK netball: a prospective cohort study over one season.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence and characteristics of match and training injuries in the UK Vitality Netball Superleague (VNSL). METH … le ligament injuries in matches caused substantial TL burden (411.7 days lost), while overuse lower leg injuries in training led to high MA burden (13.8). Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries were infrequent but burdensome (TL 496). The centre position sustained the most injuries (41%). CONCLUSION: This study underpinned implementing the first injury sur …

Acute Effects of ACL Injury-Prevention Warm-Up and Soccer-Specific Fatigue Protocol on Dynamic Knee Valgus in Youth Male Soccer Players.

Childhood anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries-which can pose a major risk to a child's sporting career-have been on the rise in the last few decades. Dynamic knee valgus (DKV) has been linked to an increased risk of ACL injury. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the acute effects of an ACL injury prevention protocol (ACL-IPP) and a soccer-specific fatigue protocol (SSFP) on DKV in youth male soccer players. The research hypothesis was that DKV would be reduced by the ACL-IPP and increased by the SSFP. Eighteen youth male soccer players were divided according to baseline DKV.

Incidence of traumatic peripheral nerve injuries and amputations in Sweden between 1998 and 2006.

BACKGROUND: To define the epidemiological pattern of nerve injuries and traumatic amputations in Sweden, 1998-2006, and investigate possible targets for emerging neural engineering and neuroprosthetic technologies. METHODS: The Swedish Hospital Discharge Register was used as the information base, including data from all public inpatient care, excluding outpatient data. ICD-10 codes were used to classify nerve injuries and traumatic amputations of high incidence levels or inpatient care time. Selected codes, causative factors, age and gender distribution were discussed in detail, and potential

Injuries from antipersonnel mines: the experience of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

OBJECTIVE: To describe and quantify patterns of injury from antipersonnel mines in terms of distribution of injury, drain on surgical resources, and residual disability. DESIGN: Retrospective analysis. SETTING: Two hospitals for patients injured in war. SUBJECTS: 757 patients with injuries from antipersonnel mines. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Distribution and number of injuries; number of blood transfusions; number of operations; disability. RESULTS: Pattern 1 injury results from standing on a buried mine. These patients usually sustain traumatic amputation of the foot or leg; they use most su

Epidemiology of Geriatric Trauma in an Urban Kazakhstani Setting.

BACKGROUND: External causes of death are still among the main causes of death in the countries of the former Soviet Union. We studied epidemiology of injuries among elderly in a typical Kazakhstani city. METHODS: Data on all injuries among individuals aged 60 yr or older in the city of Semey (former Semipalatinsk) from 2010 to 2012 was collected from medical files. We present absolute numbers and incidence rates for the main ICD-codes in Chapters XIX and XX of ICD-10 by gender, ethnic background and place where the injury occurred. RESULTS: Altogether, there were 6065 injuries in 2010-2012.

Spontaneous Leg Movements Measured by Wearable Sensors in Infancy Differentiate Later Risk for Cerebral Palsy.

BACKGROUND: To determine if early spontaneous leg movements of infants differentiate risk status for cerebral palsy (CP) in infants who had a perinatal brain injury. METHODS: Infants born at risk for CP (due to a perinatal brain injury) were classified as high risk for CP (n = 33) or not at high risk (n = 21), at 4 months of age, using General Movements Assessment and Test of Infant Motor Performance. Full-day leg movement data were recorded using wearable inertial sensors on each ankle (2 days per month, from age 1 to 4 months). Kinematic parameters were derived from accelerometer and gyrosc

Reverse Dermis Flap for Coverage of Distal Leg and Ankle Defects.

Soft tissue defects of the distal third of the leg and ankle, which frequently expose tendon, bone or osteosynthesis material, are difficult to cover and pose a major challenge to the plastic surgeon. Traditional reconstructive options for this region usually require complex flaps which made them unsuitable for elderly patients or those with multiple comorbidities. We hereby present the reverse dermis flap as an easy and reliable choice to cover this type of wounds and refer our experience in 9 cases in which clinical, operative, and follow-up data were recorded. Of the 9 flaps performed, 8 su

Nerve entrapments of the lower leg, ankle and foot in sport.

Exercise-related leg pain is a common and yet difficult management problem in sports medicine. There are many common causes of such symptoms including stress fractures and muscle compartment syndromes. There are also a number of less common but important conditions including popliteal artery entrapment and nerve entrapment syndromes. Even for an astute clinician, distinction between the different medical causes may be difficult given that many of their presenting features overlap. This review highlights the common clinical presentations and raises a regional approach to the diagnosis of the ne

Investigating injury mechanism and occupant bmi for malleolar fractures in frontal motor vehicle collisions - biomed 2010.

Injury statistics show that lower extremity injuries follow second to head trauma in motor vehicle crashes. Fractures to the ankle/foot make up approximately 35% of all lower extremity injuries in motor vehicle crashes. Previous studies have shown that toe pan intrusion is one of the main causes of foot and ankle fractures in motor vehicle crashes (MVC). This study investigates injury mechanisms of malleolar fractures involving occupants enrolled in the Wake Forest University Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network (WFU CIREN) center. By narrowing cases to frontal impacts (+/- 20 degrees

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for severe blast injury of lower extremity after terrorist attack: case report.

More blast injuries are encountered in the civilian setting in recent years as terrorist attacks have increased globally. A 17-year-old male patient with severe blast injury of the right lower extremity was admitted to our department on the fifth day after a terrorist bombing attack. Initially he had been admitted to an emergency department with segmental tibia fracture and arterial injury (Gustilo IIIC). An amputation had been foreseen due to ischemia that persisted even after orthopedic fixation and revascularization interventions, followed by fasciotomy incisions. After consultation with ou

A Rare Presentation of a Morel-Lavallee Lesion of the Lower Leg Successfully Treated With Ultrasound-Guided Aspiration.

A Morel-Lavallee lesion (MLL) is a relatively rare condition that is caused by a traumatic shearing force. This force leads to a closed degloving injury of the subcutaneous tissue and fascia that creates a potential space that can fill with lymph, blood, and necrotic fat. The MLLs are traditionally seen after high impact trauma and typically located at the greater trochanter and pelvis, although recent reports have found them to be located at the knee, thigh, and lower leg. The MLLs typically present as swelling at the site of injury, which can be difficult to differentiate from several other
