Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) of the skin is a rare malignant neoplasm that can have varied clinical presentations, even mimicking benign lesions, making diagnosis challenging. We describe a 74-year-old male with a history of subcutaneous LMS of the left leg treated successfully with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation over 10 years prior, who presented with an incidental papule on the lower back resembling an accessory nipple. Biopsy revealed a spindle cell tumour with diffuse smooth muscle actin and desmin positivity and a high Ki-67 index, consistent with a non-metastatic subcutaneous LMS. Wide loc…

BACKGROUND: Leiomyosarcoma is an invasive malignancy that emerges primarily from smooth muscle and accounts for a small percentage of head and neck sarcomas. Its occurrence in the sinonasal region is extremely infrequent, and few cases have been documented in the literature. Owing to vague symptoms and common imaging characteristics, diagnosis can often be delayed or misinterpreted.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 57-year-old female patient who first visited the ophthalmology clinic with a complaint of epiphora and was misdiagnosed with a vascular tumor in the left maxillary sinus based on CT …

Leiomyosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor of smooth muscle, typically found in the uterus and gastrointestinal tract. Its occurrence in the oral cavity is extremely rare due to limited smooth muscle presence. Diagnosis relies on histopathology, and treatment involves wide surgical resection with adjuvant therapy. A 41-year-old male presented with a progressive gingivomandibular swelling for 1 year. He had previously undergone excision of a gingival lesion diagnosed as leiomyoma, which recurred after 1 year. Examination revealed a firm, non-bleeding mass from teeth 37 to 44, with hypoesthesia in…

Leiomyosarcoma is a rare but aggressive malignancy of the paratesticular region. This case report presents a 74-year-old male who presented with an asymptomatic inguinal mass, ultimately diagnosed as a leiomyosarcoma of the spermatic cord and underwent a radical orchidectomy. This case highlights the challenges in diagnosing paratesticular sarcomas, particularly in the absence of specific symptoms. Early diagnosis and radical surgical resection are crucial for optimal outcomes. Adjuvant therapies, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, may be considered in select cases, but their role remains u…

RATIONALE: Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is usually derived from the uterus, retroperitoneum, or intra-abdominal region. However, it is relatively rare in the popliteal fossa and can easily lead to misdiagnoses in clinical practice.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 52-year-old female was admitted to the hospital with a "left popliteal fossa mass that had persisted for 8 days."
DIAGNOSES: The patient was diagnosed with benign popliteal fossa tumor following admission. The final pathological diagnosis was a malignant popliteal LMS.
INTERVENTIONS: The patient underwent 2 operations. First, the tumor was completely …

INTRODUCTION: Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) of the prostate is an extremely rare and aggressive tumor that presents with nonspecific signs and symptoms. Treatment guidelines are not yet established.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report two cases of LMS of the prostate. The presenting symptom was hematuria, and diagnosis was ascertained through a transurethral resection of the prostate for the 2 patients. The treatment course consisted of three courses of chemotherapy with gemcitabine and docetaxel, radical prostatectomy, and postoperative radiation therapy for the first patient and three courses of gemcitabin…

BACKGROUND/AIM: Uterine leiomyosarcoma (uLMS) is a rare, highly malignant, and invasive cancer, with early metastasis. Mismatch repair (MMR) proteins and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are associated with the occurrence, proliferation, and invasion of most malignant cancers; however, their abnormal expression in uLMS remains poorly clarified.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Immunohistochemistry was performed to assess MMR protein and MMP2/9 expression as well as Ki67 marker proliferation in benign and malignant uterine smooth muscle tumors. Data from 28 cases of uterine leiomyoma and 31 cases of uLMS…

Uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is an uncommon disease that arises from the smooth muscles present in the uterus. It usually occurs in post-menopausal women. Due to its aggressive nature, it has a very poor prognosis. We present a case of uterine LMS, which presented at a young age of 35 years for infertility, which is rare at this age. She had a fundal fibroid for which myomectomy was done. On histopathology, she was diagnosed with LMS. It is very difficult and nearly impossible to diagnose LMS preoperatively by available imaging modalities. There is an urgent need for a reliable preoperative ri…

BACKGROUND/AIM: Uterine leiomyosarcomas (uLMS) are extremely rare high-grade tumors with a poor prognosis. Their etiopathogenesis remains largely unknown. The uterus is the most frequent site for LMS. uLMS and uterine leiomyoma (uLM) must frequently be differentiated in patients with a uterine mass. Nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT), a cytoplasmic protein, is involved in the progression and spread of a variety of cancer types. The expression of NNMT in a mesenchymal malignancy was not examined previously. This study represents the first investigation into NNMT expression in uLMS, uLM and…

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare soft tissue sarcoma (STS) that begins in smooth muscle tissue and most often initiates in the abdomen or uterus. Compared with other uterine cancers, uterine LMS (ULMS) is an aggressive tumor with poor prognosis and a high risk of recurrence and death, regardless of the stage at presentation. Selinexor is a first-in-class selective inhibitor of nuclear export (SINE) compound that reversibly binds to exportin 1 (XPO1), thereby reactivating tumor suppressor proteins and downregulating the expression of oncogenes and DNA damage repair (DDR) proteins. In this study, …

A 55-year-old male revealed with a 5 cm-diameter mass in the lower abdomen on ultrasonography incidentally. Computed tomography showed a mass of 7 cm in size on the left side of the bladder. A malignant tumor was suspected, and surgically excised for purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Pathological examination confirmed retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma, and the resection margins were negative. Follow-up computed tomography scan was performed every 3 months. Repeated resections were performed for twice recurrences within a year after surgery. A year after the first surgery, lung metastasis was de…

INTRODUCTION: Malignant tumors of the small bowel are rare. The jejunum, ileum, and duodenum represent the most common sites of intestinal leiomyosarcoma (LMS). Herein, we present a case of a 65-year-old patient having ileal LMS successfully treated with surgical resection.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 65-year-old patient, with no comorbidities, presented with chronic and paroxysmal abdominal pain. Upper endoscopy and colonoscopy showed no abnormalities. Thoracoabdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed an ileal lobulated, heterogeneously enhancing solid mass measuring 6 cm. Laparotomy was perfor…

Uterine fibroids are difficult to distinguish from malignant masses using standard ultrasonography; and morcellation carries the risk of disseminating occult cancer in a small but relevant group of women with an undetected uterine malignancy. In this context, we follow the progress of a woman diagnosed with uterine leiomyosarcoma after suboptimal initial surgery for an assumed fibroid. Evidence is reviewed that guided multidisciplinary tumor board decisions about optimal management approaches after local seeding and development of distant metastases, and informed treatment selection at each li…

While colonic leiomyomas are common, leiomyosarcomas of the GI tract are rare. Increased mitotic rate, as well as lymph node involvement, portend a worse prognosis in leiomyosarcomas. They can arise anywhere along the GI tract, but anal canal occurrence is extremely rare. We present the case of a 75-year-old male diagnosed eight years prior with leiomyoma of the anorectal junction. There was a recurrence after endoscopic resection. He was referred to colorectal surgery due to symptoms of bleeding, skin irritation, anal pruritus, and rectal pain. On exam, he had a palpable mass at the dentate l…

Prostatic leiomyosarcoma is an uncommon tumor encountered in male dogs, with only 2 cases reported in the veterinary literature with no follow-up described. A 12-year-old male intact German Wirehaired Pointer presented for evaluation of straining to defecate and urinate. Whole body computed tomography (CT) examination identified a spherical multicavitary expansile mass arising from the prostate gland and severely obliterating the pelvic canal. Partial subcapsular prostatectomy was performed, and histological and immunohistochemical results were consistent with prostatic leiomyosarcoma. Metrono…

INTRODUCTION: Leiomyosarcoma is a rare mesenchymal tumor that originates from smooth muscle cells. Head and neck LMSs represent only 3% of all leiomyosarcomas with less than 50 cases of laryngeal LMS reported in the literature till now.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of 50-year-old male presented at our ENT department for a chronic hoarseness. Clinical examination investigations found small submucosal lesion in the right vocal cord. Treatment consisted of CO2 Laser excision of the lesion. The evolution was marked by the appearance of a tumefaction in the left submandibular region and a s…

Mesenteric leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumor. It was often misdiagnosed as a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) until the introduction of immunohistochemistry staining (IHC) in 1998. Currently, a positive IHC staining for smooth muscle markers represents the main diagnostic modality. Herein, we present a case of Mesenteric LMS in a 68-year-old woman, who presented with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain and was found to have a right-sided mesenteric tumor encasing the right ureter, with right hydroureteronephrosis. The patient underwent surgical removal of …

We present a 46-year-old female patient who underwent resection of a retroperitoneal tumor, which was found by medical check-up. The tumor which was elastic hard and had good mobility displaced the duodenum to her abdominal wall. Since her right ovarian vein adhered to the tumor, we removed the tumor with the ligated vein. Pathological findings showed the tumor consisted of spindle-shaped cells with pleomorphic nucleus and it presented the fascicular growth pattern. Additional immunostaining showed positive for HHF35, h-caldesmon. Because the leiomyosarcoma connected with the smooth muscle of …
