Echinococcus species in African wildlife.

Cystic echinococcosis, caused by different species of the Echinococcus granulosus complex, is an important zoonotic disease with a particular impact on pastoralist societies. In addition to the widespread taxa with synanthropic transmission, a number of Echinococcus species were described from African wild carnivores early in the 20th century. For lack of study material, most of these were later tentatively synonymized with E. granulosus. Early infection experiments with wildlife isolates gave ambiguous results due to the use of unspecified parasite material, and only recently molecular method

Strongyloides stercoralis infection in a Finnish kennel.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal threadworm Strongyloides stercoralis is a parasite of dog, cat and primates that occurs worldwide being most prevalent in tropical and subtropical countries. The adult parasitic worm is about 2 mm long and slender. It possesses both parasitic and free-living lifecycles. The parasitic worms are females. Strongyloides stercoralis infects the host via percutaneous, peroral or transmammary transmission in addition to autoinfection. Clinical disease varies from inapparent to severe enteritis and pneumonia. The diagnosis is based on demonstration of larvae in fresh faeces, whi

[A comparative study of three methods in detecting Angiostrongylus cantonensis larvae in lung tissue of Pomacea canaliculata].

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficiency of three methods, lung-microscopy, tissue homogenate and enzyme digestion in the detection of Angiostrongylus cantonensis larvae from the lungs of snails. METHODS: 60 Pomacea canalicular infected by the first-stage larvae of A. cantonensis were divided into 2 groups and the lung of each snail from the two groups was separated from the soft body. All the lungs were examined under microscope and larval nodes were counted. Each lung from one group was ground and that from the other was artificially digested by enzyme, the number of larvae in each lung was rec

Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism assays to distinguish Liriomyza huidobrensis (Diptera: Agromyzidae) from associated species on lettuce cropping systems in Italy.

The pea leafminer, Liriomyza huidobrensis (Blanchard) (Diptera: Agromyzidae), is a serious insect pest infesting open field lettuce plantings in northern Italy. In these cropping systems, it coexists with several other agromyzid species that have negligible economic importance on open field vegetables. The rapid detection of L. huidobrensis is crucial for effective management strategies, but the identification of agromyzids to species can be very difficult at adult as well at immature stages. In this study, a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism assay is pro

Laboratory estimation of degree-day developmental requirements of Phlebotomus papatasi (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is one of the most important vector-borne endemic diseases in Turkey. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of temperature on the developmental rates of one important vector of leishmaniasis, Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli, 1786) (Diptera: Psychodidae). Eggs from laboratory-reared colonies of Phlebotomus papatasi were exposed to six constant temperature regimes from 15 to 32 degrees C with a daylength of 14 h and relative humidity of 65-75%. No adult emergence was observed at 15 degrees C. Complete egg to adult development ranged from 27.89 +/- 1

Babesiosis. Two atypical cases from Minnesota and a review.

We present 2 atypical cases of babesiosis and a review of babesiosis. The first patient was a 72-year-old man with an intact spleen, who had marked intravascular hemolysis. His RBCs were parasitized heavily with trophozoites of Babesia, and he had a large number of extracellular aggregates of Babesia. The infection did not respond to oral antibiotic therapy, and he required an RBC exchange transfusion. The second patient was a 29-year-old man who had undergone splenectomy and who had multiple episodes of fever and gastrointestinal symptoms for 4 months, with partial response to antibiotics. Th

Fasciola hepatica: the effect of food quality on the development of redial generations in Galba truncatula infected with allopatric miracidia.

Individual bimiracidial infections of French Galba truncatula with an allopatric (Moroccan) isolate of Fasciola hepatica were carried out under laboratory conditions to count free rediae and intraredial daughter rediae in snails just after their death, and to determine whether feeding the snails on lettuce only or lettuce plus Tetraphyll had an effect on the development of redial generations. Controls consisted of snails infected with sympatric (French) miracidia and reared with lettuce only. In the allopatric group, reared with lettuce only as food, a higher mortality rate of snails in the fi

Intracerebral alveolar echinococcosis.

There are two species of the genus Echinococcus, Echinococcus multilocularis (also called alveolar hydatid) and Echinococcus granulosus, characterized by distinct growth features in humans. The main endemic regions for human alveolar echinococcosis (AE) caused by E. multilocularis are Central Europe, Russia, Turkey, Japan, China, eastern France and North America. Human echinococcosis is usually caused by an intrahepatic growth of parasitic larvae. Cerebral occurrence of E. multilocularis disease is rare, accounting for only 1% of cases, and is generally considered to be fatal. This report pres

Cercarial shedding from Galba truncatula infected with Fasciola gigantica of distinct geographic origins.

Galba truncatula snails were experimentally infected with either of two different isolates of Fasciola gigantica, originating from Egypt or China, to determine the influence of these isolates on the characteristics of snail infections. The survival rates of G. truncatula on day 30 post-exposure were 90.0% and 60.2% in the Egyptian and Chinese groups, respectively. The frequency of cercaria-shedding snails within the Egyptian group was 79.8%, whereas in the Chinese group it was 22.4%. The parasite origin had a significant effect on the durations of the prepatent and patent periods. The mean num

The development of the black blow fly, Phormia regina (Meigen).

The black blow fly, Phormia regina (Meigen) is a primary species commonly utilized to indicate a postmortem interval, or more appropriately a "time since colonization". Due to the importance of this species as a secondary myiasis producer in livestock operations, and more recently as a time since death indicator in the field of forensic entomology, a considerable amount of data on its growth and development has been generated. However, the developmental time as reported by these studies varies greatly, and current more detailed data is needed for use in medicocriminal entomology. Hourly develo

Ectoparasite control in small ruminants.

Ectoparasites are a common problem in small ruminants of North America. Management of ectoparasites in small ruminants can be challenging for producers and veterinarians. It is important for the veterinarian to make an accurate diagnosis of the type of ectoparasite that is infesting the animal, then to develop a plan that most effectively and economically controls the ectoparasite. Effective and economic control of an ectoparasite infestation begins with an understanding of the ectoparasite's life cycle and how that life cycle affects the animal. It should be noted that climate and geographica

Stickleback as a potential paratenic host in the Anisakis simplex life cycle in the Baltic Sea: results of experimental infection.

Anisakis simplex stage 3 larvae found in herring were used to experimentally infect 155 sticklebacks and 6 nine-spined sticklebacks, caught in the Gdynia marina (Gulf of Gdańsk). The larvae were observed in the fish body cavity as early as 24 h after infection, only the sticklebacks being affected. Altogether, 50 live and 2 dead larvae were found in the stickleback body cavity. The infection prevalence and mean intensity were 13.6% and 2.4 larvae, respectively, from 1 to 8 larvae per fish being recorded. It is concluded that the stickleback may serve as a paratenic host for Anisakis simplex.

Ontogenetic development of Loxosceles intermedia spider venom.

Envenomation by Loxosceles spider has become a public health problem in the South region of Brazil, mainly due to high levels of domiciliary infestation by Loxosceles intermedia spiders. The toxic effects of L. intermedia venom are mostly associated with a 35 kDa protein (F35) which presents complement-dependent haemolytic and dermonecrotic activities. The aim of this study was to detect, through biological and immunochemical assays, the appearance of the main toxic component, F35, during the ontogenetic development of L. intermedia spiders. The toxin appeared in its fully active form in venom

Natural history and biology of Cryptosporidium parvum.

The taxonomy of the genus Cryptosporidium remains ambiguous, because the current criteria for speciation are insufficient to validate the 6-8 named species. Cross-transmission experiments have shown varying and conflicting results, and the limited genetic data available do not necessarily support currently proposed species designations. The reasons for this ambiguity lie with the ubiquitous nature of Cryptosporidium, probably infecting all vertebrates and variety of tissues therein, and the absence of reference strains with defined virulence attributes that can be linked to genetic markers for

Effects of Babesia microti infection on feeding pattern, engorged body weight, and molting rate of immature Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae).

Effects of Babesia microti Franca on the pattern of feeding time, the body weight of engorged ticks, and the molting rate of the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say, were determined. Using the Syrian golden hamster, Mesocricetus auratus (Waterhouse), as an animal model, we found no significant differences in patterns of feeding time determined for both larvae and nymphs that fed on B. microti-infected and uninfected hamsters. However, an infection of B. microti in hamsters delayed engorgement of the ticks. The presence of B. microti had no adverse effects on the body weight of engorged tic

Coal dust pollution affects the early life cycle of brooding and broadcast-spawning corals.

Coral reefs are highly diverse and ecologically important ecosystems that are increasingly threatened by both natural and anthropogenic stressors. In the Colombian Caribbean, reef organisms are particularly vulnerable to pollution from coal dust, especially in areas near ports and maritime transport routes. This study evaluated the effects of coal dust on the early developmental stages of three reef-building coral species with different reproductive strategies: Orbicella faveolata, Favia fragum, and Acropora palmata. Gametes of O. faveolata and A. palmata were collected from Tayrona National N

P. falciparum PEBP protein is dispensable during asexual and sexual stages of development.

Malaria, a life-threatening disease caused by protozoan parasite Plasmodium and transmitted by mosquitoes, remains a significant threat to health worldwide, especially in the face of emerging drug resistance. Despite extensive effort having been devoted to examining the asexual phase of the parasite, the sexual change biology is understudied. Lipid-binding proteins, like phosphatidylethanolamine-binding proteins (PEBPs), play significant roles in cell signal transduction and development in several organisms. In P. falciparum, PfPEBP is highly expressed in gametocytes and may be in involved par

Revisiting cysteine protease function in Trypanosoma cruzi: implications for parasite egress and differentiation.

UNLABELLED: Chagas disease is a major global health concern affecting millions of people worldwide, with limited therapeutic options in its chronic phase and no prophylactic vaccine. The causative agent, Trypanosoma cruzi, is a unicellular eukaryotic parasite whose life cycle alternates between insect vectors and a wide range of mammalian hosts. In mammalian cells, parasite proliferation depends on iterative cycles of host cell invasion, intracellular multiplication, differentiation, and host cell rupture, releasing hundreds of infective parasites. The mechanisms governing the critical transit

TKL3 regulates blood-stage fitness, male gamete fertility, and transmission-stage development in Plasmodium berghei.

Malaria parasites must undergo complex developmental transitions to complete their life cycle and transmit between vertebrate and mosquito hosts. These transitions are tightly regulated by protein phosphorylation events, yet the specific kinases involved remain poorly characterized. Here, we investigate the role of a previously uncharacterized tyrosine kinase-like protein, TKL3, in the rodent malaria parasite Plasmodium berghei. We show that TKL3 is expressed in blood stages, schizonts, gametocytes, zygotes, and ookinetes and localizes to the cytoplasm. Targeted disruption of the TKL3 gene imp
