Fanconi Anemia in a 31-Year-Old Patient with Multiple Malignant Tumor Foci, Including Appendiceal Cancer, and Multiple Coexisting Pathologies.

BACKGROUND Fanconi anemia (FA) is a genetic disorder that impairs the function of the bone marrow and predisposes individuals to aplastic anemia. The condition is caused by mutations in genes responsible for DNA repair. People with FA have an increased risk of developing tumors due to DNA damage. Flat-cell carcinomas of the head, neck, esophagus, and genital organs are often observed in individuals with FA. CASE REPORT A 31-year-old man with Fanconi anemia and a history of bone marrow transplantation was admitted to the General Surgery Department due to elevated levels of the CEA marker. Befor

Severe pneumocranium after gamma knife stereotactic radiosurgery for brain metastasis: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Gamma knife stereotactic radiosurgery (GKRS) is a recognized safe and effective treatment for brain metastasis; however, some complications can present significant clinical challenges. This case report highlights a rare occurrence of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage and pneumocranium following GKRS, emphasizing the need for awareness and prompt management of these complications. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 35-year-old male with a history of malignant neoplasm of the lip in 2015 and perineural spread of malignancy into the left cavernous sinus was treated with GKRS in 2017. The patient was

Intraosseous epithelioid haemangioendothelioma of the mandible: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Epithelioid haemangioendothelioma (EHE) is a rare vascular neoplasm that primarily occurs in the soft tissues of the extremities, with "intermediate" or "borderline" malignant biological characteristics and a propensity for recurrence and metastasis. Oral cavity involvement is extremely rare, with only 5 reported cases of intraosseous EHE of the mandible. Herein, we report an additional case and review the related literature. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 44-year-old man was referred to our institution with a 2-month history of left lower lip numbness and a 2-week history of painful swell

Merkel Cell Carcinoma of the Buccal Mucosa and Lower Lip.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an uncommon relatively aggressive neuroendocrine dermal neoplasm first described in 1972 as a tumor of the sun exposed skin. Although most MCC affect the skin of the head and neck, rare primarily oral mucosal cases have been documented. Merkel cells are nondendritic neuroendocrine cells that are found not only in the skin but also the oral mucosa and give rise to MCC. Neuroendocrine cells may be found as aggregates in organs or as diffuse or isolated cells within organs and their epithelial lining. They contain peptide hormones and biogenic amines and occur in tw

Ileocecal valve: spectrum of normal findings at double-contrast barium enema examination.

PURPOSE: To characterize the spectrum of normal findings of the ileocecal valve at double-contrast barium enema examination to allow differentiation between a normal valve and one infiltrated by tumor. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search of radiology and endoscopy files showed 106 patients who underwent double-contrast barium enema examination and colonoscopy. The radiographic images were reviewed by two authors to determine the morphology of the ileocecal valve and to evaluate whether it appeared normal or abnormal. The radiographic data were then correlated with endoscopic and pathologic findin

Helicobacter pylori infection is causally associated with extra-gastric tumors: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is a major pathogen associated with gastric cancer. However, the causal relationship between H. pylori infection and extra-gastric tumors has not been fully elucidated. METHODS: A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study was conducted using genome-wide association study (GWAS) data on serum H. pylori IgG levels as the exposure variable and GWAS data on 268 benign and malignant tumors as the outcome variable. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with the exposure were identified from the OpenGWAS and GWAS Catalog databases

Approach to the Patient: Hirsutism.

Hirsutism affects approximately 10% of women globally, with substantial economic and quality of life effect. Facial and body terminal hair growth in a male-like pattern is determined by a number of factors, including circulating androgens, and tissue androgen receptor, 5α-reductase, 3α- and 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, and ornithine decarboxylase content. The presence of hirsutism is usually determined by the modified Ferriman-Gallwey (mFG) visual scale, assessing the amount of terminal hair at 9 body sites (upper lip, chin, chest, upper and lower back, upper and lower abdomen, upper arms

Risk of Parkinson's disease-related death in cancer survivors: A population-based study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: The risk of Parkinson's disease (PD)-related death in patients with cancer largely unexplored. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Neoplasms ANd other causes of DEath (NANDE) study, which investigates the causes of death in patients with cancer in Japan. Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were calculated to compare the risk of PD-related deaths in patients with cancer to that of the general population. Poisson regression models were employed to estimate the relative risk of PD-related death in the subgroups. RESULTS: The cohort included 548,485 patients with cancer, yielding 2,0

Functional and aesthetic evaluation of adjacent tissue flap repairing defects of oral commissure area.

BACKGROUND: From a functional and aesthetic point of view, the oral commissure is the most difficult area to reconstruct in lip defects. It is a very complex and challenging task to rebuild the function and appearance of the oral commissure area with high quality. The aim of this paper is to discuss and compare the results of different methods for the reconstruction of defects in oral commissure area. METHODS: This study used five commonly used adjacent tissue flaps to reconstruct and evaluate postoperative oral function and appearance in patients who underwent repair of defects in the oral co

Total Lower Lip Reconstruction With Functional Gracilis Free Muscle Flap.

Free flaps based on static slings principles cannot provide esthetic and functional outcomes at a desired level in total or close to total lip loss. Therefore, dynamic methods have become a current issue in recent years and especially the idea of functional gracilis free muscle flap has been suggested. In this study, we present a case of a successful total lower lip repair with this flap.In a 78-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma involving the entire lower lip, bilateral modified radical neck dissection and full-thickness total resection with 1 cm surgical m

[Precancerous lesions of the buccal epithelium].

Squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity and lips consistently have a high incidence (they constitute the fifth most common form of cancer in France) and carry a heavy prognosis, particularly if diagnosed late. According to different studies, between 10 and 80% of such carcinomas occur in a pre-existing or precancerous lesion. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends the use of two terms for such lesions: precursor lesions, i.e. histological lesions associated with intraepithelial neoplasia (IEN) and verrucous hyperplasia (VH), frequently resulting clinically in leukoplakia or erythro

[Benign focal melanotic lesions of the oral mucosa: a clinicopathologic study of 41 cases].

41 patients with benign focal melanotic lesions on the oral mucosa were studied. The results showed that among the patients, 27 were female and 14 male, the mean age was 33 years old, and the most common site was the lip and gingiva. Clinically, the lesions were focal and well-defined, the size was about 0.6 cm in diameter. Histologically, 21 cases were pigmented nuvus on the oral mucosa (18 cases with nevocellular nevus and 3 cases with the common blue nevus), 2 cases were junctional change, 5 cases were the lentigo simplex, and 13 cases were oral melanotic macule. The characteristics of the

Rate of occult metastasis in lip squamous cell carcinoma: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The rate of occult metastasis in lip cancer is poorly studied. Management of the regional nodal basin in lip cancer is thus controversial. This study sought to understand the true rate of micrometastasis in lip cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted of English language studies reporting lip cancer sentinel node biopsy results. Studies were obtained from the PubMed database between the years 2000 and 2023 using the search terms "sentinel node biopsy" and "squamous cell carcinoma." Random effect and fixed effect meta-analyses were performed.

Risk of Non-cutaneous Cancers in Individuals with Basal Cell Carcinoma: A Population-based Cohort Study.

Evidence of the association between a personal history of basal cell carcinoma and the risk of non-cutaneous malignancies is conflicting. The aim of this study was to retrospectively clarify the risk of non-cutaneous cancers in individuals with basal cell carcinoma using nationwide Finnish registry data for 96,304 patients and 394,503 randomly selected population controls. In this study, individuals with basal cell carcinoma have an increased risk of other cancers (odds ratio (OR) 1.38; 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.36-1.40). The risk was most prominent for lip cancer (OR 5.29; 95% CI 4.5

Rare Hybrid Perineurioma and Granular Cell Tumor: A Pediatric Case.

We present a case of a 13-year-old patient with a distinct tumor with both granular cell and perineurial elements, located on the lower lip. The patient presented with a long-standing lip mass that was clinically felt to most likely represent a mucocele. Following surgical excision, histopathological examination revealed a well-circumscribed tumor composed of granular cells with positive S100 protein staining and spindled cells positive for EMA and GLUT-1, confirming mixed neuroectodermal and perineurial origin. This is the first case documenting a perineurial-granular cell hybrid tumor in a p
