Risk of Adverse Birth Outcomes and Birth Defects Among Women Living With HIV on Antiretroviral Therapy and HIV-Negative Women in Uganda, 2015-2021.

INTRODUCTION: We assessed the risk of adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes and birth defects among women living with HIV (WLHIV) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) and HIV-negative women. METHODS: We analyzed data on live births, stillbirths, and spontaneous abortions during 2015-2021 from a hospital-based birth defects surveillance system in Kampala, Uganda. ART regimens were recorded from hospital records and maternal self-reports. Using a log-binomial regression model, we compared the prevalence of 16 major external birth defects and other adverse birth outcomes among WLHIV on ART and HIV-neg…

New Option in the Lives Saved Tool (LiST) Allows for the Conversion of Prevalence of Small-for-Gestational-Age and Preterm Births to Prevalence of Low Birth Weight.

Background: The Lives Saved Tool (LiST) is a software model that estimates the health impact of scaling up interventions on maternal and child health. One of the outputs of the model is an estimation of births by fetal size [appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) or small-for-gestational-age (SGA)] and by length of gestation (term or preterm), both of which influence birth weight. LiST uses prevalence estimates of births in these categories rather than of birth weight categories, because the causes and health consequences differ between SGA and preterm birth. High risk of adverse birth outcomes among adolescents living with HIV in Botswana compared to adult women living with HIV and adolescents without HIV.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls are three times more likely to be living with HIV than boys of the same age. Prior studies have found associations between adolescent pregnancies and increased maternal morbidity and infant mortality, but few studies have assessed the impact of HIV infection on maternal and infant outcomes in adolescents. METHODS: The Tsepamo Study abstracts maternal and infant data from obstetric records in government maternity wards in Botswana. We assessed maternal complications and adverse birth outcomes for all singleton pregnancies from August 2014 to August 2020 at eighteen

Effect of progesterone timing on live birth rates in day-6 blastocyst frozen-thawed embryo transfer cycles: a randomized controlled trial.

STUDY QUESTION: What is the optimal timing of progesterone exposure to achieve live births for day-6 blastocysts in artificial frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) cycles? SUMMARY ANSWER: Live birth rates (LBRs) were comparable between day-6 and day-7 progesterone supplementation for day-6 blastocyst transfers in artificial FET cycles. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: In artificial FET cycles, embryo-endometrium synchrony is primarily determined by the duration of progesterone exposure. Although blastocyst transfer is conventionally performed on day six of progesterone supplementation, the optimal dura…

Factors Associated with Live Birth After Placenta-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Therapy in Women with Recurrent Intrauterine Adhesions and Thin Endometrium.

Recurrent intrauterine adhesions (IUA) and refractory thin endometrium are associated with impaired endometrial regeneration, reduced implantation, and poor live birth outcomes. Regenerative therapy using mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) has shown promising results; however, factors associated with reproductive success remain unclear. In this prospective, single-centre, single-arm uncontrolled observational study, 35 women with recurrent IUA and thin endometrium (<7 mm) unresponsive to standard surgical and hormonal therapy received combined subendometrial and systemic administration of placen…
