INTRODUCTION: Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the gallbladder is extremely rare, and accounts for about 3% of all malignant gallbladder neoplasms.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report the case of a 58-year-old woman who presented with acute onset epigastric pain radiating to the back. The initial diagnosis, based on radiological images, was an incidental gallbladder mass with multiple gallstones. A staging laparoscopy was performed, followed by exploratory laparotomy with radical cholecystectomy. Segments 4b and 5 of the liver and the first part of the duodenum with the transverse colon were al

BACKGROUND: Clival metastases of adenocarcinomas are exceptionally rare tumors, especially when they arise from the small intestine. We present the first, to our knowledge, report of a metastasis of a duodenal adenocarcinoma to the clivus. We also present a systematic review detailing metastasis to the clivus.
METHODS: Studies were identified using the search terms "clival metastasis," "skull base metastasis," and "clivus" in PubMed. We collected the following information: histopathology of the primary tumor, symptoms, history, treatment, and follow-up.
RESULTS: A comprehensive review of the

Clear cell neoplasms presenting as metastatic hepatic masses may be difficult to differentiate histologically and immunohistochemically from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with prominent clear cell features, especially in small biopsy specimens. In situ hybridization (ISH) for albumin messenger RNA (mRNA) has been previously shown to be sensitive and specific for the detection of hepatocellular differentiation, but its use for the identification of clear cell HCC has not been previously evaluated. Among 309 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma diagnosed at Mayo Clinic between 1985 and 1998, 30 ca

PURPOSE: Well-differentiated neuroendocrine neoplasms (NETs) overexpress the somatostatin receptor, which is the target for the peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT). NETs have a slow growth rate and can metastasize to liver, bone, and lungs. In NETs patients, liver metastasis is an important prognostic marker because liver failure is one of the most common causes of death in this population. In this regard, we aimed to describe the changes in laboratorial parameters in patients submitted to PRRT with 177 Lu-DOTATATE, focusing on hepatic parameters.

Liver involvement is commonly seen in various haematological disorders. They present clinically with elevation of liver enzymes and organomegaly, with or without mass lesions. However, liver involvement may be silent in many hematological disorders or there may be specific findings in liver biopsy that can lead to the diagnosis of clinically inapparent hematological disorders. Present review highlights features of hepatic manifestations in various hematological diseases with special emphasis on histopathological findings. Among RBC disorders, secondary hemochromatosis is the commonest among pa

BACKGROUND/AIM: Prurigo nodularis (PN) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterized by intense pruritus and nodular lesions. Emerging evidence suggests PN may be associated with systemic conditions, including liver diseases. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between PN and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and liver fibrosis/cirrhosis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study was conducted using the TriNetX Research Network. Adults diagnosed with PN between 2005 and 2018 were compared with a propensity score-matched control group without PN. Patients with prior liver d

The liver in an infant or child is as liable to the same pathologies afflicting the adult liver but with certain differences in prevalence and causes. Genetic disorders are more likely to present in the paediatric age group where many involve metabolic processes such as galactosemia, phenylketonuria, glycogen storage disease and others. Many of these present in the newborn period. However, neoplasms and hamartomas also present in the newborn period, such as congenital neuroblastoma with an enormously enlarged liver, hepatoblastoma and haemangioma. The latter may present with intractable cardia

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon neoplasm first described as a tumor of mesenchymal origin that rarely involves the liver. This report presents a rare case of unresectable SFT of the liver and documents the first use of transarterial chemoembolization in its treatment. Three sessions of chemoembolization were performed aiming to reduce the tumor size or at least stabilize it. Subsequent follow-up magnetic resonance imaging examinations were performed to assess imaging response to treatment. We recommend further studies to be done to assess both the use of transarterial chemoemboliza

UNLABELLED: The duodenum is a short segment of the bowel that is frequently overlooked on radiologic examination. This unique portion occupies both intraperitoneal and extraperitoneal locations, with proximity to many visceral organs, including pancreas, stomach, aorta, and liver. This close proximity creates a differentiation challenge for the radiologist. Duodenal pathologies are categorized into neoplastic and nonneoplastic conditions. Majority of radiologists are familiar with duodenal neoplasm. However, duodenal involvement by a multitude of nonneoplastic conditions can be encountered. Th

BACKGROUND: Pediatric hepatic angiosarcoma is a rare condition in children with poor prognosis. Microscopically this neoplasm has a particular 'Kaposi-form' arrangement. Hemangiosarcoma in non-human primates is a rare finding.
METHODS: Gross and microscopic examination of a 3-year-old rhesus were performed. Immunohistochemistry was used to characterize the hepatic hemangiosarcoma.
RESULTS: The gross necropsy revealed hemoabdomen and a 4 x 3 x 3 cm mass in the liver with multiple smaller masses throughout the hepatic parenchyma. Histopathology confirmed a poorly differentiated hemangiosarcoma

INTRODUCTION: Malignant melanoma (MM) is an aggressive neoplasm that may affect pregnant women. Malignant melanoma with small-cell morphology (MMSCM) is a rare variant of MM that can cause confusion in its diagnosis.
OBJECTIVE: To report a fatal case of MMSCM in a pregnant woman, highlighting immunohistochemistry (IHC) as a very useful tool in the final diagnosis.
CLINICAL CASE: A 22-year-old pregnant female presented with a 5-cm cutaneous tumor in her right leg. The lesion was excised but the patient refused any further therapy. The natural outcome of this neoplasm occurred with local recur

We describe a case of hepatic carcinoid tumor that was diagnosed after right hepatectomy. The tumor was initially believed to be metastases from a rectal adenocarcinoma for which surgery had been performed seven years earlier. We highlight the localization of the tumor in the liver only, its large size and rapid growth, as well as the absence of carcinoid syndrome. Diagnostic studies of function and localization are presented. The absence of neoplasia in other locations suggested that this neoplasm was probably a primary hepatic carcinoid tumor. The association of carcinoid tumors with other n

Carcinosarcoma of the esophagus is a rare neoplasm of the esophagus, composes both of carcinomatous and sarcomatous elements. From Oct. 1982 to Sept. 1991, there were 516 neoplasms of the esophagus, 2 (0.39%) carcinosarcoma, treated at our hospital. The first patient was a 62-year-old man, pathological stage III (T3N2M0). The second patient was a 68-year-old man, pathological stage I (T1N0M0). The tumors were polypoid and located at the middle portion of the esophagus. They had received subtotal esophagectomy, mediastinal lymph node dissection and cervical esophagogastrostomy, retrosternally.

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are rare epithelial neoplasms that arise most commonly from the gastrointestinal tract. In pediatrics, the most common site of origin is in the appendix, with the liver being the most common site of metastasis. Neuroendocrine tumors arising from the biliary tract are extremely rare.
METHODS: We describe a case of a nine-year-old girl who presented with obstructive cholestasis and was found to have multiple liver masses identified on biopsy as well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor with an unknown primary tumor site.
RESULT: The patient underwent ext

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Long-term survival of liver transplant recipients is endangered by tumorigenesis at different sites. Little is known about primary de novo tumors developing in the graft.
METHODS: We analyzed the follow-up data of 2731 liver recipients that were transplanted between 1988 and 2019 at our institution (Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Department of Surgery). All cases with new intrahepatic tumors during follow-up were identified.
RESULTS: A total of nine patients were diagnosed at a median of 16 years (range, 2-24 years) after surgery. Eight patients presented with hepatoc

INTRODUCTION: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract. These tumors represent more than 80% of all mesenchymal tumors found in the gastrointestinal tract, though they account for only approximately 3% of all gastrointestinal malignancies. Literature offers case reports, which describe symptomatic gastrointestinal stromal tumors and they generally represent patients with larger tumors.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a small gastrointestinal stromal tumor in a 40-year-old man, with associated giant liver hemangioma and fever,

This paper describes complications and patient management issues associated with hepatic arterial chemoembolization (HACE) and embolization (HAE) used to treat liver malignancies and characterizes patient survival based on histologic tumor type. We performed a retrospective review of all patients treated with HACE or HAE between January 1, 1988 and December 31, 1990. During the study period, 314 HACEs and HAEs were performed in 121 patients. Ninety-six of the patients (79%) were treated for neoplasms metastatic to the liver. The morbidity rate following HACE and HAE in this study was 5.1%. The
