Treatment of lymphatic malformations: a more conservative approach.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Lymphatic malformation is a benign disfiguring lesion of the neck and face in children. This study investigated the application and outcome of different modes of treatment. METHODS: The medical files of all children with lymphatic malformation of the head and neck attending a tertiary medical center in 1999 to 2010 were reviewed. Findings were compared by treatment: surgery, OK-432 sclerotherapy, or observation. RESULTS: The study group included 46 patients, most (65%) with macrocystic disease. Twenty were treated by OK-432 sclerotherapy, and 15, by surgery; 11 (with mino

Cystic hygroma colli as the first echographic sign of the fetal akinesia sequence.

We report first trimester cystic hygroma colli with subsequent resolution and development of a fetal akinesia deformation sequence. Neuropathological examination of the brain showed intra- and extracellular white matter edema while spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles were normal. Hygroma colli as the first echographic sign of subsequent severe fetal akinesia sequence without muscular dystrophy as seen in the Lethal Multiple Pterygium syndrome has not been previously reported.

Primary intestinal lymphangiectasia presenting as limb convulsions: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Primary intestinal lymphangiectasia (PIL) is a rare protein-losing enteropathy characterized by abnormally dilated lymphatic structures, resulting in leakage of lymph (rich in protein, lymphocytes, and fat) from the intestinal mucosal and submucosal layers and thus hypoproteinemia, lymphopenia, hypolipidemia, and pleural effusion. CASE SUMMARY: A 19-year-old Chinese male patient complained of recurrent limb convulsions for the last 1 year. Laboratory investigations revealed low levels of calcium and magnesium along with hypoproteinemia and high parathyroid hormone levels, whereas

Creation of a Rat Lower Limb Lymphedema Model.

BACKGROUND: Lymphedema is a frequent complication after surgical treatments of cancer involving lymph node resection. However, research of lymphedema treatments, such as vascularized lymph node transfer, is limited by the absence of an adequate lymphedema animal model. The purpose of this study was to determine if we could create sustainable lower limb lymphedema in the rat with a combination of inguinal lymphadenectomy, circumferential skin and subcutaneous tissue excision, and radiotherapy. METHODS: Inguinal lymphadenectomies were completed in 15 Sprague-Dawley rats. In cohort A, 5 rats rec

[Abnormal urine color assessment: The urine wheel].

Looking at the urine for diagnostic purposes, once performed by ancient Egyptians, can still provide some valuable clues in modern medicine. Several diseases have been named after their associated urine color and this underlines the clinical value of visual urine inspection: blue diaper disease, purple urine bag syndrome, black urine disease or porphyria. Abnormal urine color could be challenging for the clinician: it may reveal neoplastic disease (urologic cancer; melanoma), cell lysis (rhabdomyolysis; hemolysis), infection (lymphatic filariasis; malaria), enzyme deficiency (porphyria; alkapt

Lymphatic malformation of the lingual base and oral floor.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic malformation of the tongue and floor of the mouth is associated with chronic airway problems, recurrent infection, and functional issues related to speech, oral hygiene, and malocclusion. There are no accepted anatomic guidelines or treatment protocols. METHODS: This retrospective review focused on anatomic extent, treatment, complications, and airway management in 31 patients with lymphatic malformation of the lingual base and oral floor. RESULTS: Involved adjacent structures included the neck (77 percent), mandible (41 percent), face (42 percent), lips (10 percent), p

Hemangioma: review of literature.

Hemangiomas are tumors identifed by rapid endothelial cell proliferation in early infancy, followed by involution over time. All other abnormalities are malformations resulting from anomalous development of vascular plexuses. The malformations have a normal endothelial cell growth cycle that affects the veins, the capillaries or the lymphatics and they do not involute. Hemangiomas are the most common tumors of infancy and are characterized by a proliferating and involuting phase. They are seen more commonly in whites than in blacks, more in females than in males in a ratio of 3:1.

Gorham disease: an intraoperative case study.

Gorham disease is a rare chronic disorder that is characterized by the abnormal proliferation of thin-walled capillaries and small lymphatic vessels that results in the massive osteolysis of adjacent bone. Clinical manifestations are determined by the area of involvement, which may include the chest and ribs. The case presented involves a 47-year-old man with Gorham disease complicated by unilateral chylothorax who was treated with thoracic duct ligation. The anesthetic implications associated with Gorham disease are discussed, and nonsurgical primary and adjunctive treatments for chylothorax

Congenital testicular lymphangiectasis in children with otherwise normal testes.

Two cases of testicular lymphangiectasis are reported, occurring in stillborns. The disease is a congenital malformation consisting of an abnormal expansive development of lymphatic vessels in both testes. Autopsy study revealed the absence of pulmonary, intestinal or systemic lymphangiectasis. The testes showed normal tubular development with normal germ cell numbers and also normal Leydig cell numbers. The epididymis and spermatic cord appeared normal. In contrast with the two previously reported cases of testicular lymphangiectasis, the present cases were not associated with cryptorchidism

Clinical significance of isolated scintigraphic sternal lesions in patients with breast cancer.

Isolated scintigraphic sternal lesions are rare. In a retrospective review of the bone scan results of 1,104 patients with breast cancer, 34 individuals (3.1%) presented with this abnormality. Of these foci, 26 (76%) were found to represent metastatic disease. There did not appear to be a relationship with axillary lymph node metastasis, the quadrant involved by primary breast tumor, or selected serum chemistries. These sternal lesions may be associated with regional lymphatic tumor spread rather than hematogenous seeding and therefore could be considered a local recurrence.

[Value of hilus tomography in tuberculin positive, non BCG vaccinated children].

X-ray films of the thorax in two levels were prepared of 15 children of 3-14 years of age who had not been BCG-inoculated, after the tuberculin test had shown a positive reaction. Besides bacteriology and bronchoscopy, tomography of the hilus and of the anterior mediastinum was performed to exclude hilar lymph node enlargements. In this manner, it became possible to disclose an enlargement of lymphatic nodes in four children in whom plain radiography of the thorax had not yielded any abnormal findings.

Streptococcus equi subspecies equi pyelonephritis in a pony.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus equi subspecies equi (SEE) causes a highly contagious disease colloquially known as "strangles" in equids. This disease is typically characterized by pyrexia, mucopurulent nasal discharge, and abscessation of the submandibular and retropharyngeal lymph nodes. Although typically localized to the upper respiratory tract, the infection can disseminate via lymphatic or hematogenous routes, leading to disseminated strangles involving peripheral lymph nodes and thoracic and abdominal organs. CASE SUMMARY: A 21-year-old Welsh Pony cross gelding presented for urine dribbling

Congenital chylothorax in infants: An updated scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Chylothorax is a medical condition characterised by the abnormal accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the pleural cavity. In its congenital form, chylothorax develops as a result of an idiopathic abnormality in the thoracic duct. Congenital chylothorax (CCT) is the leading cause of pleural effusion in infants, a condition where excess fluid builds up in the space between the lungs and the chest wall. This scoping review includes a wide range of published studies from 1980 to January 2024, obtained from multiple reputable databases, including Google Scholar, PubMed, Springer and BioMe

RASopathies for Radiologists.

RASopathies are a heterogeneous group of genetic syndromes caused by germline mutations in a group of genes that encode components or regulators of the Ras/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway. RASopathies include neurofibromatosis type 1, Legius syndrome, Noonan syndrome, Costello syndrome, cardiofaciocutaneous syndrome, central conducting lymphatic anomaly, and capillary malformation-arteriovenous malformation syndrome. These disorders are grouped together as RASopathies based on our current understanding of the Ras/MAPK pathway. Abnormal activation of the Ras/MAPK pathw

Two sides of the same coin: protective versus pathogenic mesentery in inflammatory bowel diseases - a comprehensive review.

The mesentery, a membranous structure containing blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatics and attaching the intestines to the posterior abdominal wall, plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In this review, we describe the signature features of the mesentery in IBD, including mesenteric hypervascularity (the comb sign) and edema, creeping fat generation, mesenteric fibrofatty proliferation, mesenteric lymphadenopathy, stenosis/sacculation, and hyperplasia of neurological components. These traits trigger a surge in the production of chemokines and proinflamma

The first-reported case of diffuse purulent peritonitis in a patient with retroperitoneal Hodgkin disease (etiopathogenetic hypotheses).

We report a case of purulent diffuse peritonitis in a patient who was affected by Hodgkin lymphoma, with no evidence of other abdominal diseases. This is a 54 y. old. white male who was admitted to our department with a history of asthenia, recurrent fever, dysphagia and abdominal pain. In the plain abdominal radiology pneumoperitoneum was evident. Duodenal perforation suspicion was confirmed by anamnesis and plain radiology which showed the presence of intra abdominal air. Emergency exploratory laparotomy showed a purulent diffuse peritonitis, which relapsed after multiple surgical toilettes

Deep cervical lymphaticovenous anastomosis for Alzheimer's disease: theoretical foundations, regulatory suspension, and translational challenges.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by pathological changes in β-amyloid protein deposition, abnormal tau protein phosphorylation neurofibrillary tangles, and chronic neuroinflammation. Recent studies have shown that the glymphatic-meningeal-cervical lymphatic system pathway plays a crucial role in the clearance of intracranial metabolic waste. Dysfunction of this system may lead to a decrease in the clearance efficiency of Aβ and tau proteins. Deep cervical lymphaticovenous anastomosis (DCLVA) has been proposed as a novel surgical approach to enhance cervica

Serial failure of the brain clearance continuum in Alzheimer's disease: mechanisms and therapeutic perspectives.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is usually regarded as a neurodegenerative disorder defined by amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition and abnormal tau accumulation. Increasing evidence suggests that reduced clearance of metabolic waste and pathological proteins from the brain also contributes to disease onset and progression. Previous studies have often considered choroid plexus (CP) function, glymphatic exchange, and meningeal lymphatic drainage as separate clearance processes. A continuous framework linking these structures and functions is still lacking. This review integrates recent clinical and experimental
