Effect of Homocysteine on the Differentiation of CD4+ T Cells into Th17 Cells.

BACKGROUND: The hyperhomocysteinaemia (Hhcy) is a common phenomenon observed in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Our previous study showed that Hhcy aggravated intestinal inflammation in an animal model of colitis. Increased levels of IL-17 and RORγt were also observed in this animal model of colitis with Hhcy. However, the direct effect of homocysteine on the differentiation of Th17 cells has never been studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the direct effect of Hhcy on the differentiation of CD4+ T cells into Th17 cells. METHOD: Lamina propria lymphocytes (LPLs) in

Current problems and future directions of transfusion-induced alloimmunization: summary of an NHLBI working group.

In April 2010, a working group sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute was assembled to identify research strategies to improve our understanding of alloimmunization caused by the transfusion of allogeneic blood components and to evaluate potential approaches to both reduce its occurrence and manage its effects. Significant sequelae of alloimmunization were discussed and identified, including difficulties in maintaining chronic transfusion of red blood cells and platelets, hemolytic disease of the newborn, neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia, and rejection of transplanted c

Pretreatment prediction of early severe treatment-related toxicity in older patients with lung adenocarcinoma: same-center temporal validation of a risk model.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with lung adenocarcinoma have heterogeneous tolerance of chemotherapy-based treatment. Early severe toxicity can disrupt planned therapy, require unplanned admission, and limit treatment intensity. We developed a pretreatment risk model for severe treatment-related toxicity within the first two chemotherapy-based cycles and examined whether Fatigue, Resistance, Ambulation, Illnesses, and Loss of weight (FRAIL) category and inflammatory-nutritional markers add risk-stratification information. METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort included patients aged ≥60 y

Geriatric Assessment-Based Stratification to Evaluate Treatment Intensity, Quality of Life, and Survival in Older Patients With Metastatic Colorectal Cancer: Protocol for a Prospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Older patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) are a heterogeneous population with wide variability in functional status, frailty, cognition, nutritional reserve, and comorbidity burden. Treatment decisions are often guided primarily by chronological age and performance status, which may not adequately capture vulnerability or patient-centered outcomes in this population. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this study is to prospectively evaluate the association of baseline geriatric assessment (GA)-derived frailty with overall survival in older patients with mCRC receiving fir

Enhancing prognostic precision: exploring the role of lung immune prognostic index in immunotherapy-treated soft tissue sarcoma patients-a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue sarcoma (STS), is a rare and heterogeneous malignant mesenchymal tumor that has seen limited therapeutic advances in the past five decades, resulting in limited therapeutic efficacy and a poor prognosis in cases with metastasis or recurrence. The Lung Immune Prognostic Index (LIPI), integrating pretreatment-derived neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (dNLR) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), has been associated with adverse outcomes in various cancers. However, its role in STS remains unclear. METHODS: The retrospective study collected and analyzed clinical data, including PL

Evaluation of smoking status as a prognostic factor under immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment: A single center analysis.

Smoking may influence cancer treatment outcomes; however, there is conflicting evidence on the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in active smokers. It has been suggested that smokers receiving ICIs may achieve improved outcomes compared with non-smokers. The present study aimed to challenge this assumption by investigating the prognostic impact of smoking status and other characteristics in patients with metastatic or advanced cancer undergoing ICI therapy. In the present study, patients with predetermined solid tumors who received ICIs either as a monotherapy or in combination r
