Screening broad beans (Vicia faba) for magnesium deficiency. I. Growth characteristics, visual deficiency symptoms and plant nutritional status.

We used broad beans (Vicia faba L.) as a case study to characterise the development of magnesium (Mg) deficiency symptoms in plants and make a comparative evaluation of the suitability of various physiological characteristics as prospective tools for early diagnosis of Mg deficiency. Growth characteristics were measured at monthly intervals from plants grown in soil solution with a wide range of Mg concentrations (from 1 to 200 ppm). The data were then correlated with plant yield responses, pigment composition and nutrient content in leaves, as well as with visual deficiency symptoms. At the a

The maize CorA/MRS2/MGT-type Mg transporter, ZmMGT10, responses to magnesium deficiency and confers low magnesium tolerance in transgenic Arabidopsis.

ZmMGT10 was specifically expressed in maize roots and induced by a deficiency of magnesium. Overexpression of ZmMGT10 restored growth deficiency of the Salmonella typhimurium MM281 strain and enhanced the tolerance in Arabidopsis to stress induced by low magnesium levels by increasing uptake of Mg2+ via roots. CorA/MRS2/MGT-type Mg2+ transporters play a significant role in maintaining magnesium (Mg) homeostasis in plants. Although the maize CorA/MRS2/MGT family comprises of 12 members, currently no member has been functionally characterized. Here, we report the isolation and functional charact

Submaximal exercise intensities do not provoke variations in plasma magnesium concentration in well-trained euhydrated endurance athletes with no magnesium deficiency.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of exercise intensity during an incremental exercise test on plasma Mg concentration in well-trained euhydrated athletes. Twenty-seven well-trained endurance athletes carried out a cycloergometer test: after a warm-up of 10 min at 2.0 W·kg(-1), the workload increased by 0.5 W·kg(-1) every 10 min until exhaustion. Oxygen uptake (VO(2)), blood lactate concentration ([La(-)](b)), catecholamines, and plasma Mg were measured at rest, at the end of each stage and at 3, 5 and 7 minutes post-exercise. Urine specific gravity (U(SG)) was analyzed before

Intracellular magnesium deficiency and effect of oral magnesium on blood pressure and red cell sodium transport in diuretic-treated hypertensive patients.

The effects of magnesium supplementation were tested in 20 patients with essential hypertension receiving long-term thiazide diuretic treatm … pectively). These results indicate that long-term diuretic treatment may give rise to intracellular magnesium deficiency and a suppression of cell membrane active sodium transport. The results also suggest that oral magnesium may decrease intracellular sodium, possibly through the activation of Na-K-ATPase, which in turn may contribute to the reduction in blood pressu …

Magnesium deficit and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS): SIDS due to magnesium deficiency and SIDS due to various forms of magnesium depletion: possible importance of the chronopathological form.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) might be due to the fetal consequences of a Mg maternal deficiency, which might be prevented by simple atoxic nutritional Mg intake by the mother. Various stresses in the pregnant women or in the infant may transform a simple Mg deficiency into Mg depletion which may not be cured by nutritional Mg supplement, but requires a correction of its causal dysregulation. Beside the well established risk factors in baby care and in the environment, it is important to stress the possible role of a primary hypofunction of the biological clock. This may be treated by da

Soil potassium-magnesium imbalance induces magnesium-deficiency chlorosis in macadamia leaves: impacts on microstructure, photosynthesis, yield, quality, and fatty acid profile.

BACKGROUND: Magnesium deficiency is a common symptom of chlorosis in macadamia plantations in southern China, particularly in Yunnan, which restricts their sustainable production and processing quality. This study clarified its negative effects on leaf physiology and fruit quality. RESULTS: Magnesium-deficient plants exhibited interveinal chlorosis in lower leaves, disordered mesophyll cells, weakened chlorophyll autofluorescence, and 45.52-70.08% lower leaf magnesium content (P < 0.05), hindering chlorophyll biosynthesis. Chloroplasts were fewer in number, and ultrastructurally exhibited red…

Photooxidation in interveinal tissues of magnesium-deficient leaves is associated with sugar accumulation.

Magnesium (Mg) deficiency often leads to leaf photooxidation, typically manifested as interveinal chlorosis. This symptom arises from an imbalance between light energy absorption and its utilization, resulting in excessive excitation energy, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and subsequent photodamage. However, the spatial heterogeneity of Mg deficiency responses within a leaf remains poorly understood, particularly the physiological basis for the greater severity of photooxidation in interveinal tissues compared with vein-adjacent areas. Here, a hydroponic culture system was employed

Elevated serum magnesium lowers calcification propensity in Memo1-deficient mice.

MEdiator of cell MOtility1 (MEMO1) is a ubiquitously expressed redox protein involved in extracellular ligand-induced cell signaling. We previously reported that inducible whole-body Memo1 KO (cKO) mice displayed a syndrome of premature aging and disturbed mineral metabolism partially recapitulating the phenotype observed in Klotho or Fgf23-deficient mouse models. Here, we aimed at delineating the contribution of systemic mineral load on the Memo1 cKO mouse phenotype. We attempted to rescue the Memo1 cKO phenotype by depleting phosphate or vitamin D from the diet, but did not observe any effec

OsMGT1 Confers Resistance to Magnesium Deficiency By Enhancing the Import of Mg in Rice.

Magnesium (Mg) is an essential nutrient element for plant growth and plays an important role in numerous physiological and biochemical processes. Mg deficiency inhibits plant growth and has become a growing problem for crop productions in agriculture. However, the molecular mechanisms for the resistance to Mg deficiency in plants were not well understood. In this study, we identified a Mg transporter gene OsMGT1 that confers resistance to Mg deficiency in rice (Oryza sativa). The expression of OsMGT1 was highly induced by Mg deficiency in shoots. Investigation of tissue expression patterns rev

The importance of chronic magnesium deficiency in human disease and the Gitelman's syndrome paradox.

Resistance to immune checkpoint inhibitors is a major clinical obstacle in the treatment of gastric cancer. Identifying drug-resistant cell populations and markers remains an urgent problem to be solved. This study by constructing a single-cell transcriptomic atlas of gastric cancer, we identified a subset of T/NK cells associated with ICI resistance. These cells exhibited impaired MHC-I-mediated immune recognition with tumor cells, were positioned at an early stage of T cell differentiation, and displayed elevated histidine metabolism. Mechanistically, we identified the transcription factor I

[Magnesium deficiency and stress: Issues of their relationship, diagnostic tests, and approaches to therapy].

Magnesium plays an important role in the functions of the central nervous system. It takes part in the regulation of the cell membrane, the … ween the manifestations of stress reactions (anxiety, autonomic dysfunction, and maladjustment) and magnesium deficiency (MD). Thus, mental and physical stresses cause an increase in magnesium elimination from the body. MD in turn enhances a response to stress, by paradoxically aggravating its sequels. Compensation for MD increases the ability of the nervous system to …

Effect of magnesium deficiency on antioxidant status and cadmium toxicity in rice seedlings.

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most toxic heavy metals and inhibits physiological processes of plants. Magnesium (Mg) is known as one of the essential nutrients for plants. Mg deficiency in plants affects metabolic processes. Plants grown in the field may encounter several abiotic stresses, rather than a single stress. Thus, the relationship between Mg nutrition and Cd toxicity is of ecological importance. In this study, effects of Mg deficiency on antioxidant systems and Cd toxicity in rice seedlings were investigated. Mg deficiency significantly decreased Mg concentrations in shoot and roots of

Enhanced susceptibility to MPTP neurotoxicity in magnesium-deficient C57BL/6N mice.

We evaluated the effect of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) in C57BL/6N mice fed a magnesium (Mg(2+))-deficient diet. On the 3rd week, Mg(2+)-deficient mice displayed increased anxiety- and depression-like behavior. In the Mg(2+)-deficient mice, a low does (10mg/kg) of MPTP treatment decreased dopamine (DA) and its metabolites contents in the striatum, but not in control mice. The same dose of MPTP did not influence these neurochemical markers in the mice fed Mg(2+)-deficient diet for 1 week which did not exhibit the altered emotional behavior. These results indicate that Mg

Cardiac fibrogenesis in magnesium deficiency: a role for circulating angiotensin II and aldosterone.

Mechanisms underlying cardiac fibrogenesis in magnesium deficiency are unclear. It was reported earlier from this laboratory that serum from magnesium-deficient rats has a more pronounced stimulatory effect on cell proliferation, net collagen production, and superoxide generation in adult rat cardiac fibroblasts than serum from rats on the control diet. The profibrotic serum factors were, however, not identified. This study tested the hypothesis that circulating angiotensin II may modulate cardiac fibroblast activity in hypomagnesemic rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were pair-fed a magnesium-de…
