At Ziguinchor Regional Hospital (ZRH) in Senegal, 80% of maternal deaths are associated with late referral of dystocia cases. The gynecology and obstetrics team of the ZRH, in collaboration with the teaching staff of the Institute of Health and Development (ISED), tried to find ways to combat maternal mortality and stillbirth, based on double-entry contigency tables and a logical framework. We developed a tool more elaborate than a simple decision tree: the dystocial risk score. This tool has three components: A column provides a list of eight characteristics to check for in the woman: history…

Eighty-nine maternal deaths occurred at Charity Hospital of New Orleans between 1965 and 1984, for an overall rate of 60.8 per 100,000 live births. The mortality rate increased with increasing maternal age, was greater with cesarean than vaginal delivery, and has not continued to decline over the 20-year interval. Of those decedents delivered abdominally, more than half of the deaths were attributable to operative complications, including anesthesia, rather than to an underlying disease. Although the majority of obstetric deaths were attributable to complications of hypertension, hemorrhage, a

A study was made of the 67 still-births and the 58 neonatal deaths that occurred among the 3,516 viable infants (birth weight 1,000 g. or more) that were born to public patients of the obstetric units of Port Moresby General Hospital and St. Therese's Maternity Hospital during the year 1972. The combined stillbirth and neonatal mortality rate was 35.5 per 1,000 births. The adverse effects of lack of antenatal care, delivery outside hospital, high parity, maternal anaemia, mulitple pregnancy, and low birth weight are demonstrated. Low birth weight (1,000 to 2,200 g.) of unknown cause accounted

Maternal deaths are among the most critical global health indicators and directly reflect the quality of obstetric care. In this context, it is crucial to define and evaluate maternal mortality accurately. The aim of this study was to identify the factors leading to maternal deaths, and to assess the burden of trauma-related deaths. The autopsies of maternal deaths conducted at the Morgue Department of the Ankara Group Presidency of the Council of Forensic Medicine between 2011 and 2025 were retrospectively recorded through the National Judicial Network system. A total of 63 cases were identif…

BACKGROUND: Maternal tetanus toxoid (MTT) vaccination during pregnancy remains an important factor for reducing infant mortality globally, especially in developing nations, including Bangladesh. Despite commendable progress in reducing child mortality through widespread MTT vaccination during pregnancy, the issue still exists. This analysis explores the impact of MTT vaccination on neonatal mortality in Bangladesh and identifies associated factors.
METHODS: This research utilizes data from the 2019 Bangladesh Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS). The dataset consists of 23,402 cases; amon

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests common pathways between pregnancy losses and subsequent long-term maternal morbidity, rendering pregnancy complications an early chronic disease marker. There is a plethora of studies exploring associations between miscarriage and stillbirth with long-term adverse maternal health; however, these data are inconclusive.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We systematically searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, AMED, BNI, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library with relevant keywords and MeSH terms from inception to June 2023 (no language restrictions). We included studies exploring associations be

BACKGROUND: Around the world, a maternal death occurs approximately every two minutes-most of these deaths are preventable. The maternal mortality ratio is a key indicator for the Sustainable Development Goals, yet we have no reliable way to estimate maternal deaths in refugee or internally displaced persons (IDP) camps and settlements. The goal of this study was to understand the methodologies most suited for adaptation for use to estimate the proportion of maternal mortality due to abortion complications in these settings.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of methodologies to estimate …

In individuals with Turner syndrome, the risk of death from aortic dissection or rupture during pregnancy may be as high as 1%, and it is unclear whether this risk persists during the postpartum period owing to pregnancy-related aortic changes. Turner syndrome is a relative contraindication for pregnancy; however, it is an absolute contraindication for pregnancy in a patient with an aortic size index of >2.5 cm/m2 or an aortic size index of ≥2.0 cm/m2 with a documented cardiac anomaly or other risk factors. This document replaces the 2012 document of the same name.

BACKGROUND: Understanding health financing reforms and means is key to evaluate how maternal health has improved. Problems related to health financing policies are contributing to inadequate quality of care and inequitable use of healthcare by pregnant women, resulting in poor maternal health outcomes. The purpose of the study was to measure socioeconomic and health financing related inequality in maternal mortality in Colombia as well as identifying potential epicenters of this inequality.
METHODS: The data used was obtained from National Information of Social Protection (Sispro), the Depart…

Background and Objectives: Risk factors for neonatal/maternal morbidity and mortality in placental abruption have been incompletely studied in the current literature. Most of the research overlooked the African American population as mostly Caucasian populations are selected. We aimed to find which risk factor influence the neonatal and maternal outcome in cases of placental abruption occurring in African American pregnant women in an inner-city urban setting. Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, NJ United States of America (
