Alleviation of Epiphora by Canaliculosinostomy into the Caudal Maxillary Sinus in the Horse.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a technique of canaliculosinostomy into the caudal maxillary sinus to alleviate epiphora secondary to nasolacrimal duct obstruction and to report the long-term outcome in 5 horses. STUDY DESIGN: Case series. ANIMALS: Five client-owned horses. METHODS: Case records of all horses presented for chronic epiphora to a single equine hospital that underwent surgical treatment were reviewed. All included horses had a Jones test or dacryocystography to confirm nasolacrimal duct obstruction. All horses were anesthetized and canaliculosinostomy was created from the medial canthu…

A modified bone lid for osteoplastic surgery of the maxillary sinus.

Major problems associated with the use of a bone lid for osteoplastic surgery of the maxillary sinus, as first described by Lindorf, are the possibility of postoperative dislocation of the bony fragment into the sinus (floating bone), as well as inflammatory resorption or fracture of the very thin removed trap door fragment. We describe a technique that prevents dislocation of the bone lid and allows for very good visualization of the entire sinus by a simple extended design and the use of resorbable pins. With the use of this extended bone lid, the removal of severely dislocated teeth, implan…

Removal of an upper third molar from the maxillary sinus.

The maxillary sinus or antrum is the largest of the paranasal sinuses. It is located in the maxillary bone and has a proximity to the apexes of upper molars and premolars, which allows it to form a direct link between the sinus and the oral cavity. Dislocation of a foreign body or tooth to the interior of a paranasal sinus is a situation that can occur as a result of car accidents, firearm attacks, or iatrogenic in surgical procedures. Therefore, it is necessary to know how to treat this kind of situation. This study's objective is to report the case of a 23-year-old female patient, leucoderma…

Titanium Granules for Augmentation of the Maxillary Sinus - A Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: Biomaterials are commonly used to augment the maxillary sinus floor prior to or in conjunction with dental implant installation. Recently, porous titanium granules (PTGs) have been used in oral implant surgery to stabilize implants and function as an osteoconductive matrix. PURPOSE: To evaluate if PTGs can be safely used in a larger population of patients, treated by different surgeons, when sinus floor augmentation was required in conjunction with implant installation. The primary endpoint was 12-month survival rate of the dental implants. Biopsies for histology were taken from t…

Maxillary Sinus Septa and Anatomic Correlation With the Schneiderian Membrane.

Aim of this investigation is to evaluate prevalence, localization, and height of 114 maxillary sinus septa by using cone-beam computed tomography scans. The thickness of the mucosa has been measured together with the variations of the membrane in relation to those septa. A total of 228 maxillary sinuses have been considered. Septa were identified using "panorex" reconstructions and axial scans of cone-beam computed tomography using the software "eXamVision." The thickness of the mucosa has been evaluated in the paraxial scans and related to those septa where they were present. In the current s…

The importance of early diagnosis in patients with maxillary sinus carcinoma.

There are two major challenges in the early diagnosis of maxillary sinus carcinoma: the maxillary sinus is not susceptible to direct inspection and palpation, and symptoms are uncharacteristic. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the time interval between first symptoms noticed by the patient and the detection of the tumor on survival. 88 patients with maxillary sinus tumors were included in the retrospective study. Prognostic factors were identified through univariate analysis. Univariate analysis (p = 0.019) revealed a significant impact of the time interval from first symptom …

Immature teratoma of the maxillary sinus: a rare pediatric tumor.

IMPORTANCE: Noncongenital immature teratomas in the head and neck are extremely rare, and to our knowledge have not previously been reported in the maxillary sinus of a pediatric patient. OBSERVATIONS: Teratomas are neoplasms that contain tissue from more than 1 embryonic cell layer that is foreign to the location where they arise and are most commonly found in the sacrococcygeal and gonadal regions in children. We present an unusual case of an immature teratoma in the maxillary sinus of a 10-year-old boy and discuss the diagnostic workup, management, and clinical course. CONCLUSIONS AND REL…

[One case of primary malignant lymphoma of the maxillary sinus].

Malignant lymphoma of the maxillary sinus is very rare. A case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) of the left maxillary sinus is presented here. A 59-year-old man came to our hospital complaining of swelling under the left lower eyelid without any other symptoms. Imaging examination including CT and MRI detected a tumor in the left maxillary sinus. The tumor was invasive into left orbit. The biopsy revealed a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The tumor cells were positive to CD20, CD79a, CD45. In conclusion, a very rare case of DLBCL of the maxillary sinus was reported.

Cholesteatoma of the maxillary sinus: a case report and review of the literature.

Cholesteatoma is a relatively common disease entity within the middle ear cavity, but it is rarely found in the paranasal sinuses. We describe a rare case of cholesteatoma in the maxillary sinus of an elderly man presenting with recurrent sinus infections and nasal obstruction refractory to medical treatment. The patient was treated using functional endoscopic sinus surgery with successful removal of the cholesteatoma. He has no recurrence of the cholesteotoma at a 13year follow-up. We review the literature and history on maxillary cholesteatomas and discuss the theories on the pathogenesis of…

Evaluation of the lacrimal recess of the maxillary sinus: an anatomical study.

UNLABELLED: The anatomical relation between the maxillary sinus and the nasolacrimal duct has gained greater importance with the advent of microsurgeries and endoscopic-assisted sinonasal procedures, and the growing use of endonasal surgery to perform middle meatus procedures and transnasal dacryocystorhinostomy. We did not find reports on maxillary sinus classification concerning its lacrimal recess, nor how often it is found. OBJECTIVE: To assess how frequent the lacrimal recess can be found in the maxillary sinuses of dissected anatomical specimens. METHOD: We assessed 31 half-heads from …

The quantitative effect of an accessory ostium on ventilation of the maxillary sinus.

The airflow and gas exchange behaviors of the human maxillary sinus were quantified to better understand the effect of an accessory ostium (AO). An anatomically correct numerical domain was constructed using CT data from a male patient with mild nasal obstruction. For the purpose of comparison, a numerical model without an AO was also generated by artificially removing the AO from the original model using CAD software. A steady-flow field through the nasal cavity was simulated using ANSYS-FLUENT v13.0 with a target flow rate of 250 ml/s. The Volume of Fluid (VOF) method was used to investigate…

Effects of exposing dental implant to the maxillary sinus cavity.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of exposing dental implants to the maxillary sinus cavity. This is a retrospective study. Thirteen patients with 18 implants that had radiographic evidence of implant exposure to the maxillary sinuses participated in this study. We evaluated the patient's radiographs immediately after implant insertion and 12 months after operation with the patient's clinical signs and symptoms due to sinusitis. Thirteen patients with 18 implants in the maxillary sinus had no signs and symptoms of sinusitis. Radiography showed thickening of the sinus membranes …
