BACKGROUND: Despite the safety devices worn by bicycle riders and the road safety measures designed to protect them, road cycling is still associated with frequent traumas, notably to the extremities. Maxillofacial injuries are common, especially when road traffic accidents occur. There is a paucity of literature on the epidemiology of bicycle-related facial fractures in New Zealand.
METHODS: A retrospective database of patients presenting to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit at Christchurch Hospital during an 11-year period was reviewed. Variables examined included demographics, types …

Over the years, blindness following maxillofacial trauma has been reported by many workers. Although various mechanisms and suggested treatments have been proposed, blindness in the absence of any bony or direct penetrating injury is rare.

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate rehabilitation strategies to reduce trismus, pain, and edema in patients with maxillofacial trauma.
METHODS: An electronic search in main databases was performed, including studies published until November 2017. Clinical trials aiming to investigate therapeutic techniques to improve mandibular range of motion and to reduce pain and edema compared to other treatments were included.
RESULTS: Nine studies were included in the review with different therapy modalities: photobiomodulation, kinesiologic tape, hilotherapy, jaw exercises, and TENS. Only five st

The authors made an attempt to highlight the issues of rehabilitation of the patients suffering wounds in the maxillofacial region with the concomitant disorders in the function of the organs of speech. The secondary objective of the study was to prove that rehabilitation of such patients is possible only by means of the joint efforts and close cooperation of dentists, physiotherapists, and speech therapists. The results of the clinical observations of the most severe cases of the impaired speech function obtained in the evacuation hospitals have been considered, with the special emphasis plac

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Management of midface trauma is complex and challenging and requires a clear understanding of the facial buttress system, subunit anatomy and inter-relationships. Too often clinicians attempt surgical repair without adequate knowledge of the common complications associated with poor reduction and improper sequencing of fracture repair. This review outlines a working approach to the identification and management of such injuries, and the definitive management of common injury patterns.
RECENT FINDINGS: Midface trauma, with or without life-threatening and sight-threatening co

The traumatic superior orbital fissure syndrome is an uncommon complication of craniomaxillofacial trauma. The diagnosis is clinical and associates ophtalmoplegia (constantly at initial clinical examination), ptosis and anaesthesia of the forehead. Young men victim of road traffic accidents are most often affected. CT-scan usually shows facial and/or craniofacial fractures more or less spreading towards the superior orbital fissure. The absence of fracture seen at the X-rays does not eliminate the diagnosis. Initial management should be multidisciplinary (maxillofacial surgeons, ophthalmologis

OBJECTIVES: Various different methods of intubation are suitable for facial trauma cases. A choice often has to be made between orotracheal and nasotracheal when surgical access to the nasal or oral cavity is necessary. This work presents our current experience using submental intubation in the airway management of facial trauma patients.
STUDY DESIGN: From July 2003 to February 2005, 13 sufferers from facial trauma benefited from submental intubation. All the patients were males and the ages ranged from 19 to 35 years (mean, 27 years).
RESULTS: In all the patients, the submental intubation

Traumatic aneurysms of the peripheral arteries are observed exceptionally rarely. With the localization in the maxillofacial region it presents a diagnostic and therapeutic problem. The authors report the successful treatment of a patient with traumatic aneurysm of facial artery, directing the attention to the necessity of a diagnostic puncture in case of traumatic swelling with pulsations.

The maxillofacial trauma patient whose neurologic status undergoes a rapid and serious deterioration may have a severe hyponatremia secondary to the inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH). Other causes of hyponatremia must be ruled out, especially posttraumatic cerebral salt wasting, which necessitates a different mode of therapy. A case of SIADH is reported, and the work-up and differential diagnosis of posttraumatic hyponatremia are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: In contrast to epidemiologic studies on facial injuries reporting on dental trauma, facial bone fractures with dentoalveolar injuries, or soft tissue injuries individually, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the overall place of dental trauma in facial injuries. This was a retrospective investigation of the impact of sport, work, violence, traffic, household, and play accidents in the relationships among dental trauma, facial trauma, and other concomitant trauma. Finally, preventive considerations are discussed.

The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate and compare the epidemiology and pattern of maxillofacial injuries caused by stumbling and other kinds of falls. We evaluated all patients with facial injuries due to stumbling or falls who presented to Besat Hospital in Hamedan, Iran, during the 2.5-year study period and analyzed the acquired data. Of 2990 patients with facial injuries who were referred to Besat Hospital during the study period, 733 (24.5%) were injured by stumbling, and 246 (8.2%) were injured by falls. The male-to-female ratios in the stumbling and falls groups were 2:1 and …

A retrospective study was performed to assess maxillofacial fractures in patients treated at a public hospital from 2002 to 2006. The data collected included age, gender, etiology, type of injury, treatment modalities and period of treatment. Causes were grouped into seven categories: road traffic collisions, sports accidents, occupational accidents, gunshot fractures, falls, violence and other causes. The analyses involved descriptive statistics, the Chi-squared Test and the Fisher Exact Test. Records from 132 patients sustaining 185 maxillofacial fractures were evaluated. The mandible (54.6%

Interpersonal violence is a major cause of maxillofacial fractures. The aim of this study was to analyze the characteristics of these fractures associated in an effort to develop more effective management. The clinical records and radiographs of 272 patients with maxillofacial fractures associated with interpersonal violence collected during a 36-year period were retrospectively analyzed. Two hundred and nineteen patients were male (80.5%) and 53 (19.5%) were female. The patients ranged in age from 1 to 77 years. Two hundred and two patients (74.3%) were aged 10 to 29 years. The injury was the

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal trophic syndrome is a rare complication of peripheral or central damage to the trigeminal nerve characterized by anesthesia, paresthesia and a secondary persistent facial ulceration.
METHODS: We describe the case of a 40-year-old woman with previous history of Le Fort I osteotomy for a class III malocclusion who developed trigeminal trophic syndrome. Atypically, the cutaneous symptoms appeared bilaterally and 8 years after surgery.
RESULTS: Differential diagnosis was based on clinical history, tissue biopsy and serologic evaluation. Atypical findings could be linked to

INTRODUCTION: A number of papers exist about post-traumatic silaocele. Iatrogenic sialocele has been described as complication of parotid surgery but there is no specific data about the cases of sialocele and salivary duct surgical injury in condylar fracture management.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 36-year-old man was reported to the maxillofacial emergency department for mandibular sub-condylar fracture and internal fixation of the sub-condylar fracture was planned. Postoperatively he presented a salivary cyst which was managed by conservative treatment.
DISCUSSION: Iatrogenic injury to the sal
