Sublethal nickel toxicity shuts off manganese oxidation and pellicle biofilm formation in Pseudomonas putida GB-1.

In sediments, the bioavailability and toxicity of Ni are strongly influenced by its sorption to manganese (Mn) oxides, which largely originate from the redox metabolism of microbes. However, microbes are concurrently susceptible to the toxic effects of Ni, which establishes complex interactions between toxicity and redox processes. This study measured the effect of Ni on growth, pellicle biofilm formation and oxidation of the Mn-oxidizing bacteria Pseudomonas putida GB-1. In liquid media, Ni exposure decreased the intrinsic growth rate but allowed growth to the stationary phase in all intermed

Noninvasive radiation burn diagnosis using speckle phenomenon with a fractal approach to processing.

Radiation burns account for the vast majority of damage by accidental radiation exposure. They are characterized by successive and unpredictable inflammatory bursts that are preceded by a clinically latent postirradiation period. Diagnosis and prognosis of the clinical course of radiation burns have proven to be a difficult task. In a classical clinical setting, no technique can distinguish irradiated versus healthy skin during the clinically latent period, hence development of new tools is required. This work describes a noninvasive technique based on speckle phenomenon, designed to support r

Effects of 1,3,5-Trinitrobenzene on cytotoxicity and metabolic activity of type I astrocytes of rats.

1,3,5-Trinitrobenzene (TNB) is a munitions chemical that causes gliovascular lesions in the brain stem of rats similar to those produced by thiamine deficiency and nitroaromatic compounds, including m-dinitrobenzene. To identify neuropathic indices of toxicity, the effects of varying concentrations (0 to 2 mM) of TNB on cytotoxicity and cellular metabolic activity were examined using cultured astrocytes from Fischer-344 rats. The cytotoxicity was assessed by lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage into the culture medium. Astrocyte metabolic activity was assessed by measuring the conversion of a t

Drinking During Pregnancy and the Developing Brain: Is Any Amount Safe?

Heavy prenatal alcohol exposure can have lifelong, disabling effects on brain and cognition. Unlike animal studies, research on light-to-moderate drinking in humans demonstrates less consistent impact. Discussions of negative research findings in popular media underestimate potential adverse outcomes and complicate decisions about risks versus benefits of light-to-moderate drinking during pregnancy.

Multilevel modelling of factors influencing eight or more antenatal care visits among women of reproductive age in South Africa.

Globally, thousands of women die due to pregnancy-related complications. The World Health Organization recommends at least eight or more ant … enatal care visits. Age at birth, birth order, population group, marital status, employment status, media exposure, place of residence, household wealth and province were statistically associated with eight or more antenatal care visits. Women whose age at birth was 20-34, those exposed to the media, those from rich households, and those from the Western Cape ha …

A bioengineered platform reveals progressive impairment of skeletal muscles by metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease-derived factors.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) affects >30% of the global population and is increasing in prevalence to become the most common liver disorder. MASLD can influence distal organs via secreted mediators, and up to 43% of patients show sarcopenia or related muscle-wasting phenotypes. We developed a modular human three-dimensional bioengineered liver-muscle platform to dissect causal liver-muscle crosstalk. Liver constructs recapitulated steatosis and transition to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), with inflammatory, apoptotic, immune cell-re

Secondary fungal infections in chronic suppurative otitis media.

A clinical, bacteriological and mycological study of 103 cases of 'safe' chronic suppurative otitis media with intractable otorrhoea was conducted to observe the role of fungi in the pathogenesis and perpetuation of the disease process. Mycotic otitis media was found in 42 cases (40.77%).45 patients with draining ears which grew pure bacterial growth were treated with ear drops. Fifteen of these patients were treated with topical antibiotics (polymyxin, Neomycin & Gramicidin). Other 15 patients were put on antibiotic steroid (Polymxin, Neomycin and Hydrocortisone) ear drops. The remaining 15 p

The use of tympanometry in predicting otitic barotrauma.

Static acoustic impedance tympanometry was used to examine 80 subjects prior to and after exposure to decreased ambient pressure in a hypobaric chamber. The predictive value of tympanometry in detecting those individuals likely to suffer from otitic barotrauma (aerotitis media) was evaluated. The results suggest that testing prior to altitude exposure is of no value in identifying those individuals who will suffer from otitic barotrauma during flight. Tympanometry however proved a useful tool in confirming the presence of barotrauma following flight, but it was no more useful than taking a his

Media reporting of tenofovir trials in Cambodia and Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Two planned trials of pre-exposure prophylaxis tenofovir in Cambodia and Cameroon to prevent HIV infection in high-risk populations were closed due to activist pressure on host country governments. The international news media contributed substantially as the primary source of knowledge transfer regarding the trials. We aimed to characterize the nature of reporting, specifically focusing on the issues identified by media reports regarding each trial. METHODS: With the aid of an information specialist, we searched 3 electronic media databases, 5 electronic medical databases and ext

Immunomodulation by cannabidiol in bovine primary ruminal epithelial cells.

BACKGROUND: Ruminant livestock experience a number of challenges, including high concentrate diets, weaning and transport, which can increase their risk of disorders such as ruminal acidosis, and the associated inflammation of the ruminal epithelium. Cannabidiol (CBD), a phytochemical from hemp (Cannabis sativa), is a promising target as a therapy for gastrointestinal inflammation, and may be extremely valuable as either a treatment or prophylactic. However, the effects of CBD in the the ruminant gastrointestinal tract have not been explored, in part due to the restrictions on feeding hemp to

Policy, practice and decision making for zoonotic disease management: water and Cryptosporidium.

Decision making for zoonotic disease management should be based on many forms of appropriate data and sources of evidence. However, the criteria and timing for policy response and the resulting management decisions are often altered when a disease outbreak occurs and captures full media attention. In the case of waterborne disease, such as the robust protozoa, Cryptosporidium spp, exposure can cause significant human health risks and preventing exposure by maintaining high standards of biological and chemical water quality remains a priority for water companies in the UK. Little has been docum

Effects of hypoxia on catecholamine synthesis in rabbit carotid body in vitro.

1. Unanaesthetized, unrestrained rabbits were exposed for 3 hr in a chamber to either air, hypoxic gas mixtures (10% or 14% O(2) in N(2)) or a hyperoxic gas mixture (50% O(2) in N(2)). The carotid bodies were then removed and incubated for 3 hr in modified Tyrode media equilibrated with 100% O(2) and containing either [(3)H]tyrosine or [(3)H]DOPA. The contents of [(3)H]DA and [(3)H]NA in the tissue were determined as described in the preceding paper.2. When [(3)H]DOPA was used as precursor, neither labelled dopamine (DA) or noradrenaline (NA) synthesis was increased in carotid bodies from rabb

Self-control and social support in the link between academic pressure anxiety depression and social media addiction in college students.

The deep integration of social media into daily routines has intensified concerns about problematic social media use among students, adversely affecting both educational outcomes and psychological well-being. Drawing on Social Cognitive Theory and Cognitive-behavioral Theory, this study investigates the roles of academic pressure, anxiety, and depression in the development of social media addiction, with particular attention to the mediating effect of self-control and the moderating role of social support. A survey of 900 college students collected data on these key variables. Structural equat

Time spent, not use frequency: Associations between social media use and anxiety and depressive symptoms across age groups in the Czech population.

Social media use may facilitate connection and access to information while also being associated with poorer mental health. This study examined associations between social media use and anxiety and depressive symptoms across age groups in the Czech population aged 16 years and older. Cross-sectional data were collected through a computer-assisted web survey conducted in January 2025 among 2867 respondents aged 16 years and older. Anxiety and depressive symptoms were assessed using the GAD-7 and PHQ-9 scales. Internal consistency was high (GAD-7: α = 0.914, ω = 0.916; PHQ-9: α = 0.877, ω = 0.88

The Impact of Social Media Use and Gaming on Initiation of Smokeless Tobacco Use Among Rural Male Youth.

PURPOSE: Smokeless tobacco (SLT) use is more common among White male youth in rural locations than among other youth. Previous literature documents risk factors for SLT use (e.g., perceived harm). However, no research has examined whether SLT initiation is associated with the use of social media and video games, despite the high prevalence of those behaviors among adolescent males. METHODS: As part of the evaluation of "The Real Cost" smokeless prevention campaign, we conducted a baseline survey of a cohort of US males aged 11-16 in 2016 and four follow-up surveys conducted approximately ever

The developmental effects of media-ideal internalization and self-objectification processes on adolescents' negative body-feelings, dietary restraint, and binge eating.

Despite accumulated experimental evidence of the negative effects of exposure to media-idealized images, the degree to which body image, and eating related disturbances are caused by media portrayals of gendered beauty ideals remains controversial. On the basis of the most up-to-date meta-analysis of experimental studies indicating that media-idealized images have the most harmful and substantial impact on vulnerable individuals regardless of gender (i.e., "internalizers" and "self-objectifiers"), the current longitudinal study examined the direct and mediated links posited in objectification

Re-emergence of Symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in a Homeless Woman.

Posttraumatic stress disorder is commonly found in people experiencing homelessness; however, due to the high rates of other disorders, it may be undetected. In this article, we describe a woman previously recovered from depression and addiction who suffered from reactivation of traumatic symptoms following media exposure to Hurricane Katrina. Supportive psychotherapy with behavioral strategies are also described.

Inhibitory control and stress biomarkers in response to social media stimuli: a Go/No-Go study using heart rate variability, alpha-amylase and oxytocin.

Problematic social media use is increasingly recognized as a heterogeneous phenomenon; yet the cognitive and psychophysiological mechanisms underlying distinct user profiles remain poorly understood. This study examines the relationship between cognitive control, stress regulation, and the psychophysiological response to social media stimuli using a multidimensional approach. Using a three-phase protocol (baseline, task, and recovery), inhibitory control was assessed alongside objective biomarkers-heart rate variability (SDNN), salivary alpha-amylase (sAA), and salivary oxytocin-across three d
