Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most commonly inherited cardiomyopathy worldwide, characterized by left ventricular hypertrophy and hypercontractility. Many cases of HCM are due to pathogenic changes in cardiac sarcomere proteins. Traditional therapies including B-blockers, non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers and septal reduction therapy have long provided symptomatic relief, but they have not necessarily addressed the disease state at the cellular level. The treatment landscape for HCM has evolved significantly over the last decade with the emergence of new targeted therapie

BACKGROUND: The management of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ) is challenging and controversial. At present, there is no established medication treatment for the disease.
METHODS: A 78-year-old osteoporotic woman with osteonecrosis of the mandible related to alendronate therapy was referred for treatment. The disease was unresponsive to conservative therapy, including antibacterial mouth rinse, antibiotics, and minor surgical debridement. Teriparatide, a human recombinant pararthyroid hormone peptide 1-34, was then used for treatment.
RESULTS: The oral mucosa complete

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are increasingly used for type 2 diabetes, obesity, and broader cardiometabolic, cardiorenal, and metabolic liver disease indications, creating new challenges for perioperative medication safety. This review summarizes current evidence on GLP-1RA-associated delayed gastric emptying and proposes a structured pharmacist-led framework for individualized perioperative risk management. GLP-1RAs may increase the likelihood of residual gastric contents during anesthesia or procedural sedation despite adherence to standard fasting recommendations. P

OBJECTIVE: Childhood asthma morbidity and mortality are increasing despite improvements in asthma therapy. We hypothesized that a substantial number of children with moderate to severe asthma are not taking the maintenance medications recommended by national guidelines. The objective of this study was to describe medication use among US children with asthma and determine risk factors for inadequate therapy.
METHODS: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) III 1988-1994 provided cross-sectional, parent-reported data for children 2 months to 16 years of age. Analysis focus

BACKGROUND: Non-adherence to urate-lowering therapy (ULT) is a significant issue in the management of gout, a prevalent form of inflammatory arthritis that adversely affects patients' quality of life and burdens healthcare systems. Although ULT is effective in reducing serum uric acid levels, many patients fail to adhere to their medication regimens. Factors contributing to this non-adherence include treatment complexity, medication costs, side effects, forgetfulness, and individual health beliefs, as well as issues related to healthcare providers such as communication and education. Atherosclerosis begins in youth and is directly linked to the presence and severity of cardiovascular risk factors, including dyslipidemia. Timely identification and management of dyslipidemia in childhood can slow atherosclerotic progression and decrease risk for future cardiovascular disease, especially in children with a genetic disorder predisposing to dyslipidemia (e.g., familial hypercholesterolemia, which is frequently undiagnosed). Existing screening strategies can identify cases of paediatric dyslipidemia effectively but should be conducted both earlier and more broadly. Evaluating fo

Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) normally binds to TNF-α receptors, leading to the inflammatory response of autoimmune diseases. Adalimumab is a TNF-inhibiting, anti-inflammatory, biological medication which binds to TNF-α, thus reducing this inflammatory response. The use of TNF-α-inhibiting medication, such as adalimumab, being the first FDA-approved treatment for hidradenitis suppurativa, has drastically changed the management of dermatological diseases. One rarely reported manifestation that occurs as a side effect associated with the use of TNF-α-blocking agents is erythroderma. This study

Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) is a life-threatening adverse reaction arising from the use of neuroleptic medications. While dopaminergic agonists, dantrolrene and supportive care are traditionally utilized in the stabilization and management of NMS, anticholinergic medication may also prove effective therapy. Treatment with anticholinergic medication has been suggested in cases of NMS associated with mild hyperthermia. We describe a case of 17-y-old female, who was brought to the emergency department for a possible "acute dystonic reaction". The patient received 50 mg diphenhydramine i.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous revascularization (PR) of atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (RAS) improves patency in the renovascular disease. However, whether PR is associated with additional clinical benefits in the patients with atherosclerotic RAS remains controversial. We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the outcomes of PR versus medication alone for atherosclerotic RAS.
METHODS: We compiled an electronic database of prospective, randomized, controlled trials related to the efficacy of PR versus medication for RAS. The standardized mean difference (SMD) or relative risk ratios (RRs) w

Midsubstance Achilles tendinopathy is one of the most common lower leg conditions. Most patients can recover with nonsurgical treatment that focuses on tendon loading exercises and, when necessary, symptom modulating treatments such as topical, oral, or injected medication, ice, shoe inserts, manual therapy, stretching, taping, or low-level laser. If unresponsive to initial management, a small percentage of patients may consider shockwave or sclerosing treatment and possibly surgery.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis includes conditions characterized by joint inflammation of unknown etiology lasting longer than 6 weeks in patients younger than 16 years. Diagnosis and medical management are complex and best coordinated by a pediatric rheumatologist. The mainstay of therapy is anti-inflammatory and biologic medications to control pain and joint inflammation. Orthopedic surgical treatment may be indicated for deformity, limb length inequality, or end-stage arthritis. Evaluation of the cervical spine and appropriate medication management in consultation with a patient's rheumatolo
