Tectum opticum development in embryonic quail (Coturnix japonica) and the role of HSP70 in the developmental process.

INTRODUCTION: The tectum opticum, which is a section of the mesencephalon, is located between the cerebellum and the ventral hemispherium of birds. In birds, the tectum opticum has a well-developed, thick, layered structure. It is quite large compared to those of other vertebrates and is considered the primary pathway of visual information to the telencephalon. Heat-shock proteins (HSPs) are molecules that help fold newly synthesised polypeptides, assemble multiprotein complexes and transport proteins across cellular membranes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, 50 fertilised quail eggs wer…

The associations between common neuroimaging parameters of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy in magnetic resonance imaging and non-specific inflammatory factors - pilot study.

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy is an atypical parkinsonism based on tauopathic pathology. Growing interest is associated with the pathomecha … nce imaging using 3 Tesla. The serum levels of IL-1 were positively correlated with the area of the mesencephalon, suggesting that higher levels of IL-1 are not linked with atrophic changes in this region, whereas serum levels IL-6 was positively correlated with frontal horn width and negatively correlated with superior cerebellar area. Additionally IL-6 in the …

Unusual Neurological Manifestation of Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis in an Adult.

Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis is a rare disorder characterized by an abnormal proliferation of Langerhans cells in one or multiple organs. I … ages lateral to the right pons, at the level of the left middle cerebellar peduncle and at the left mesencephalon. Balance disorders can rarely present a sign of a degenerative neurological cerebellar involvement. Such a rare manifestation can present in different neurological disorders such as Langerhans' cell Histiocytosis.

Endoscopic Transfontanellar Approach of a Cyst Anterior to the Brainstem Crossing the Foramen Magnum-Part II: Success of Multiple Fenestrations: Two-Dimensional Operative Video.

Premature infants with severe germinal matrix/intraventricular hemorrhage are at high risk of posthemorrhagic ventricular dilation and hydrocephalus (Video 1). We report a 4-month-old premature infant with grade III intraventricular hemorrhage and compartmentalized hydrocephalus with an unusual craniospinal cyst. The cyst extended anteriorly from the mesencephalon to the posterior wall of C6, causing severe compression of the brainstem and spinal cord. An endoscopic procedure was performed first to achieve a unique cranial fenestration, which is detailed in "Endoscopic Transfontanellar Approac…

PET rCBF showed the highest values in the thalami, mesencephalon and brain stem and the lowest in cortex and unmyelinated white matter. The average global CBF was 17.8 ml/100 g/min. The average frontal and occipital unmyelinated white matter CBF was 10.3 ml/100 g/min and average thalamic CBF 31.3 ml/100 g/min. Th …

The Impact of Ghrelin on the Survival and Efficacy of Dopaminergic Fetal Grafts in the 6-OHDA-Lesioned Rat.

To explore this, we confirmed the expression of the GHSR1a and related enzymes on e14 ventral mesencephalon. To determine a functional effect, five groups of female Sprague-Dawley rats received a unilateral 6-OHDA lesion to the medial forebrain bundle and four received an intrastriatal graft of e14 ventral mesencephalic cells. Grafted rats received saline …

Identification, molecular characterization and analysis of the expression pattern of SoxF subgroup genes the Yellow River carp, Cyprinus carpio.

The expression levels of Sox7 and Sox18 were highest in the mesencephalon, while the expression level of Sox17 was highest in the epencephalon. In carp, the expression patterns of SoxF genes indicated a potential function of these genes in neurogenesis and in vascular development. These results provide new information for …

Endocannabinoid signaling mechanisms in the substantia nigra pars reticulata modulate GABAergic nigrotectal pathways in mice threatened by urutu-cruzeiro venomous pit viper.

The substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNpr) is rich in γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic neurons and connected to the mesencephalic tectum (MT) structures, such as the superior colliculus and dorsal periaqueductal gray matter. The SNpr presents a high density of cannabinoid receptors (CBRs), suggesting a possible regulatory role that is played by endocannabinoids (eCBs) in the ventral mesencephalon. The present study investigated the involvement of SNpr eCB mechanisms in nigrotectal pathways in the expression of defensive behavior associated with instinctive fear and panic reactions in mice tha…

[Pontomedullary lacerations and concomitant injuries: a review of possible underlying mechanisms].

Anatomically, brainstem is constituted of medulla oblongata, pons and mesencephalon. Traumatic lesions of brainstem most commonly occur on pontomedullary junction. There are several possible mechanisms of pontomedullary lacerations. The first mechanism includes impact to the chin, with or without a skull base fracture, and most often leads to this fatal injury, due to impact force transmission through the jawbone and temporomandibular joint. The second mechanism includes lateral and posterior head impacts with subsequent hinge fractures, where occurrence of pontomedullary lacerations in these …

Morphometric analysis of subcortical structures in progressive supranuclear palsy: In vivo evidence of neostriatal and mesencephalic atrophy.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by gait and postural disturbance, gaze palsy, apathy, decreased verbal fluency and dysexecutive symptoms, with some of these clinical features potentially having origins in degeneration of frontostriatal circuits and the mesencephalon. This hypothesis was investigated by manual segmentation of the caudate and putamen on MRI scans, using previously published protocols, in 15 subjects with PSP and 15 healthy age-matched controls. Midbrain atrophy was assessed by measurement of mid-sagittal area of the midbrain and …

Mitochondrial DNA 11777C>A mutation associated Leigh syndrome: case report with a review of the previously described pedigrees.

Here, we present a male infant with clinical signs of typical Leigh syndrome. The first symptom, myoclonus was presented already on the 5th day of life; at 7 months of age limb convulsions and cerebral paresis with hypotonia were developed. At the age of 11 months, MRI verified increased signal intensity in the entire mesencephalon and medulla oblongata; while gray matter proton spectroscopy revealed presence of lactate increase in the brain. At age of 17 months, the child died in cardiorespiratory arrest. After autopsy, the diagnosis of Leigh syndrome was established; using DNA isolated from …
