The Life and Works of Vincent Hayward: An Introduction.

In this Introduction, we have the pleasure of introducing the twelve articles of this Special Issue of Multisensory Research celebrating the life and works of Vincent Hayward. Vincent was a prolific scientist, collaborator, and colleague. As you will see by the variety of contributed papers, his influence spanned several fields and topics; from engineering to neurophysiology; from skin mechanics to olfactory metacognition. We and many others had the pleasure of knowing and working with Vincent. His boundless curiosity shines through in the papers of this Special Issue, and hopefully in our Int…

Everyday Executive Functioning Profiles in Adults with Down Syndrome.

Research on everyday executive functions in individuals with Down Syndrome (DS) has focused mostly on children and adolescents. The current study examined everyday executive functions in DS adults. 27 DS adults (aged 22.00 to 42.00 years) were tested using the Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult Informant Version (BRIEF-A). Findings revealed that DS adults exhibited greater impairments in Global Executive Composite (GEC), Working Memory, Plan/Organise, Task-Monitor and the Metacognition Index (MI) relative to typically developing adults in the normative sample. Substantial v…

A primer on meta-awareness of mind wandering in schizotypy and schizophrenia.

During everyday life, our attention may drift away from immediate perceptual inputs to consider alternatives unrelated to the task at hand, which is known as mind wandering. At times, mind wandering may be accompanied by awareness of one's attention having deviated from the ongoing task, often referred to as meta-awareness. However, mind wandering can also occur without individuals immediately noticing that their attention is off task. Importantly, little is known about mind wandering and meta-awareness, including their underlying content in schizotypy and schizophrenia. Here, in this narrativ

The interactive effects of surprise and plausibility on memory.

It has been demonstrated that surprising information often leads to better recall. Yet, this might not apply to information that is considered to be implausible. The present study examines how surprise and plausibility judgments relate to participants' memory for numerical statements. Participants performed an estimation task in which they were presented with an incomplete numerical fact (e.g., X out of 10 bus drivers are women) for which they were asked to provide an estimation. After being presented with an answer, they indicated how surprised they were about the answer and whether they foun

Partial awareness during voluntary endogenous decision.

Despite our feeling of control over decisions, our ability to consciously access choices before execution remains debated. Recent research reveals prospective access to intention to act, allowing potential vetoes of impending decisions. However, whether the content of impending decision can be accessed remain debated. Here we track neural signals during participants' early deliberation in free decisions. Participants chose freely between two options but sometimes had to reject their current decision just before execution. The initially preferred option, tracked in real time, significantly pred

Interoceptive functioning in schizophrenia and schizotypy.

Though bodily self-disturbances are well documented in schizophrenia, interoceptive functioning (i.e., the perception of the internal state of the body) remains poorly understood in this population. In fact, only two studies to date have empirically measured interoceptive ability in schizophrenia. Both studies documented a deficit in interoceptive accuracy (i.e., the objective performance on a heartbeat detection task), and one noted differences in interoceptive sensibility (i.e., the subjective experience of interoception) in this population. To our knowledge, interoceptive awareness (i.e., t

Psychometric properties and measurement invariance of the Turkish version of the multidimensional cognitive attentional syndrome scale.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive attentional syndrome and metacognitive beliefs are the two elements that comprise the metacognitive therapy model. The aim of the Multidimensional Cognitive Attentional Syndrome Scale (MCASS) is to comprehensively measure this construct. AIM: To test the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the MCASS and its use in patients and controls. METHODS: A total of 229 participants (115 patients and 114 healthy controls) were included in this study. Confirmatory factor analyses, internal consistency analyses (Cronbach's α and McDonald's ω), concurrent validity ana

Meditation and psychedelics facilitate similar types of mystical, psychological, and philosophical-existential insights predictive of wellbeing: a qualitative-quantitative approach.

Both psychedelic substances and meditation have been proposed to facilitate personally meaningful and transformative experiences, with insights playing a central role. However, previous research has mainly relied on questionnaires, limiting the range of insights that can be identified. In this study, we recruited participants who provided narrative reports of insights in personally meaningful psychedelic (n = 147) or meditation (n = 66) experiences. Psychedelic experiences were facilitated both by classic (e.g., LSD, psilocybin, DMT) as well as non-classic (e.g., MDMA, ketamine, cannabis) psyc

The Role of Empathy in ADHD Children: Neuropsychological Assessment and Possible Rehabilitation Suggestions-A Narrative Review.

Background and Objectives: Theory of mind (ToM) deficits in children with ADHD are closely related to social difficulties and problems in interpersonal interactions. Evidence suggests that these cognitive deficits negatively affect the ability to understand and respond to others' emotions and intentions, thus contributing to social isolation and a lower quality of life. However, the findings across studies vary, indicating that ADHD subtype and comorbidities, such as anxiety and mood disorders, can significantly influence sociocognitive deficits, modulating the extent of social problems. Worry and rumination: do they prolong physiological and affective recovery from stress?

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression have been linked to repetitive negative self-regulation styles in the form of worry and rumination respectively. Following predictions of the metacognitive model [Wells, A., & Matthews, G. (1994). Attention and emotion: A clinical perspective. Hove: Erlbaum], the current study compared the effect on recovery from stress of three strategies: worry, rumination, and distraction using a stress exposure paradigm. It was predicted that worry and/or rumination would be associated with delayed recovery on physiological and/or self-report indices when compared to dist

Neural dissociations in attitude strength: Distinct regions of cingulate cortex track ambivalence and certainty.

People's behaviors are often guided by valenced responses to objects in the environment. Beyond positive and negative evaluations, attitudes research has documented the importance of attitude strength--qualities of an attitude that enhance or attenuate its impact and durability. Although neuroscience research has extensively investigated valence, little work exists on other related variables like metacognitive judgments about one's attitudes. It remains unclear, then, whether the various indicators of attitude strength represent a single underlying neural process or whether they reflect indepe

[Cognitive psychotherapy of social phobia and generalized anxiety disorder].

Recent years have seen a better understanding of the psychological changes underlying social phobia and generalized anxiety disorder, and successful methods of cognitive psychotherapy have been developed. Exposure to social situations causing anxiety and cognitive restructuring has diminished social anxiety. An underlying factor in generalized anxiety disorder is, among other things, a difficulty to deal with and tolerate uncertainty. Adaptation of distressing dysfunctional metacognitions has recently emerged alongside conventional cognitive-behavioral treatment modalities.

Theories of intelligence in children with reading disabilities: a training proposal.

A recent trend in the study of reading difficulties promotes multidimensional intervention, focusing on the reciprocal influences exerted by cognitive and emotional-motivational variables. This study evaluated improvements in reading performance as a function of metacognitive training in 36 children (M age = 8.7 yr.) with different representations of intelligence. Posttest evaluations show significantly more improvement in reading comprehension in children with an incremental theory of intelligence. These results indicate the importance of treatment programmes that take into account both the s

Emotional distress or executive dysfunction? What is the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult self-report scale actually assessing in an assessment-seeking postsecondary sample?

Using archival Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning-Adult (BRIEF-A), Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), and executive functioning (EF) test data from 826 assessment-seeking postsecondary students, this study sought to assess the impact that response bias, symptom validity, and psychological factors have on self-reported executive dysfunction and the relationship between self-reported EF and objective performance. Study 1 examined whether the BRIEF-A adequately samples negative response bias (NRB) and what the effect was of undetected NRB on obtained BRIEF-A scores. Study 2 e

Longitudinal Relations Between Representational and Advanced Theory of Mind and Scientific Reasoning From Ages 4 to 7.

Children's scientific reasoning involves integrating early-developing causal reasoning capacities with the metacognitive capacity to represent and update the likelihood of hypotheses given evidence. Numerous studies have shown relations between children's scientific reasoning and certain metacognitive capacities, particularly 6- to 10-year-olds' developing theory of mind. Several recent studies suggest, however, that nascent scientific reasoning capacities emerge during the preschool years. The present study examined relations between children's developing representational and advanced theory

Measuring intellectual humility through situated behavior: An alternative to dispositional self-reports.

Although psychological theory views behavior as an interaction between person and situation, the measurement of metacognition often relies on situation-free, abstract self-views. To align measurement with interactionist frameworks, we proposed a situated approach, using intellectual humility (IH)-recognizing one's limits and fallibility-as a proof-of-concept. We validated this approach across diverse populations: English- and Spanish-speaking North Americans (N = 633) and adults from 136 rural Honduran villages (N = 2567). Rather than rating abstract tendencies, participants reconstructed thre…

Enhancing Self-Awareness in Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Preliminary Randomized Controlled Trial of the Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment Program.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether the Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment (FIE) program, a structured metacognitive intervention grounded in Mediated Learning Experience theory, could produce significant and durable improvements in self-awareness of memory abilities among older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS: In a three-arm randomized controlled trial conducted across seven assisted-living facilities in Israel, 114 Hebrew-speaking adults aged 67-99 years diagnosed with MCI were assigned to the FIE intervention or one of two active control conditions (psychological discussion

Synergy Between Neurofeedback and Biofeedback Enhances Therapeutic Outcomes.

This paper discusses both the 'why' and the 'how' concerning a multi-modal approach to enhancing treatment outcomes with a variety of client … ed emotional regulation if there is anxiety and/or depression, and coaching in learning strategies (metacognition) to help with academic delays and/or learning disabilities. The triad of neurofeedback, biofeedback (especially heart rate variability training) and metacognitive strategies will produce improvements in most clients, regardless of their disorder. Ad …

English as a foreign language learners' strategy awareness across proficiency levels from the perspective of self-regulated learning metafactors.

The previous three decades have seen a growing body of research into language learners' self-regulated learning (SRL), language learning strategy (LLS) use, and their possible effects on proficiency. This study thus provides insights into the relationship between elementary and low intermediate learners' perceptions of their self-regulated strategy use in English as a foreign language (EFL) and their attitude to English in relation to their proficiency level. Nine hundred and sixty-six higher proficiency students and 399 lower proficiency students in Year 8 participated in the research. A revi
