We report the case of a 5 1/2-year-old Congolese girl with homozygous sickle cell anemia and hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin (Hemoglobin S 88%, Hemoglobin A2 2%, Hemoglobin F 10%). She presented marked enlargement of the spleen, descending into the left iliac fossa and producing significant hypersplenism with thrombocytopenia as low as 60,000/mm3. The ultrastructural changes induced in hydatid cysts from lungs of sheep after medication with one or two courses of mebendazole (Ovitelmin), each lasting 3 wk, are described. The hydatid germinal membrane tissue collected from the treated sheep showed complete degeneration of the tegumental and subtegumental structures and minor degree of calcification. Lung hydatid cysts of the untreated sheep presented normal ultrastructural configurations.

The current study investigates the total bacterial contamination in various packed and unpacked ras malai samples of 14 different localities of Lahore, Pakistan. The bacterial colonies such as Bacillus sp. and Gamella sp. were isolated from ras malai samples and grown on agar-broth media under sterile environmental conditions. Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) is one of several entities in the differential diagnosis of scleroderma. We report a 62-year-old man with PCT diagnosed since two decades. Clinical data and the results of light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy of skin biopsies are presented. We examined by light and electron microscopy 99 vascular lesions removed on 17 occasions over a 2-year period from a 55-year-old black man. The lesions all showed histologic features of a vascular neoplasm composed of enlarged "histiocytoid" endothelial cells and overlapping features of angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia and Kaposi's sarcoma. An apparently unique feature was early loss of melanin from the overlying epidermis and a mononuclear inflammatory-cell infiltrate. The patient also had an abnormal immunologic state very similar to that seen in homosexuals with Kaposi's sarcoma.
