Persistent nodules at injection sites (aluminium granuloma) -- clinicopathological study of 14 cases with a diverse range of histological reaction patterns.

AIMS: To assess and document the spectrum of histological appearances of persistent swellings which occur at injection sites following vaccination or allergen desensitization. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fourteen cases were studied. Four overlapping histological reaction patterns were evident. Ten cases showed at least focal fibrosis, fat necrosis and a mixed inflammatory cell infiltrate mainly in the subcutis, giving rise to the features of a non-specific septal and lobular panniculitis. The appearance of three cases, in addition to the non-specific panniculitis pattern, also included prominent lym

Tooth ultrastructure of late triassic Haramiyidae.

Six molars of Haramiyidae from the French lower Rhaetic were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and by electron diffraction. Typical polished wear facets were located on the tops and on the occlusal bases of cuspids. Enamel was found to have had a structural pattern defined as "pre-prismatic", consisting of a repetitive pinnate orientation of the c-axes of apatite crystallites but without interprismatic material. Peritubular dentin was not found, but hydroxyapatite deposition in the dentinal tubular lumens was observed, whereas typical denticles with dentinal tubules an

Multimodal electron microscopy of halide perovskite interfacial dynamics.

Halide perovskite light-emitting diodes promise high-efficiency1-3, low-cost optoelectronics, yet their operational instability remains a critical barrier to practical deployment. Here we develop a multimodal in situ electron microscopy approach that integrates four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and atomic-resolution imaging to directly visualize structural and chemical evolution in a working halide perovskite light-emitting diode with nanometre precision. Our in situ biasing measurements uncover nanoscale structural and chemical tr

Morphology of Larger Salivary Glands in Peccaries (Pecari tajacu Linnaeus, 1758).

This work aims to study the major salivary gland morphology of peccaries during their growth. The glands were analyzed using macroscopic description, light microscopy, electron microscopy, histochemistry, and immunohistochemistry. Topographically, the salivary glands resemble other animals, including domestic animals and pigs. During growth, the parotid enlarges and mandibular gland loses weight. Histologically, the parotid has serous production, and sublingual has mucous production, resembles most species, however, mandibular gland produces mucous, unlike other animals, including pigs, which

Morphological signs of apoptosis in axotomized ganglion cells of the rabbit retina.

Optic nerve section in mammals induces apoptotic death of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). However, a small population of RGCs survives for a relatively long time. These cells experience significant morphological changes due to the apoptotic process, but some of these changes are not clearly differentiated from those experienced in necrotic cells. In the present work, rabbit RGCs were studied 1 month after optic nerve section using light microscopy after neurobiotin injection, transmission electron microscopy (EM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Apoptosis was identified by terminal deoxy

Lipoidal labellar secretions in Maxillaria ruiz & pav. (Orchidaceae).

The labella of Maxillaria acuminata Lindl., M. cerifera Barb. Rodr. and M. notylioglossa Rchb.f., all members of the M. acuminata alliance, produce a viscid wax-like secretion. Histochemical analysis revealed that the chemical composition of the secretion is similar in all three species, consisting largely of lipid and protein. Light microscopy and low-vacuum scanning electron microscopy were used to investigate the secretory process. In a fourth taxon, M. cf. notylioglossa, transmission electron microscopy showed that lipid bodies are associated with smooth endoplasmic reticulum or occur as p

Sequestrocytes: a manifestation of transcellular cross-bonding of the red cell membrane in sickle cell anemia.

An unusual form of red cells (called sequestrocytes) that circulate in the peripheral blood of patients with sickle cell anemia has been identified. In wetmount light microscopy preparations, sequestrocytes appear as massively vacuolated erythrocytes. We have shown by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy that the morphology of sequestrocytes can be accounted for on the basis of transcellular cross-bonding of the cell membrane. Initially, endocytotic vesicles span the cytoplasmic space, forming putative cytoskeletal fusion zones. Points of fusion of the membrane ske

Diseases of the human breast: selective isolation and exposure of epithelia and their correlative surface features and histopathology.

Tissues from seventy-one patients were obtained within one-half hour of biopsy, mastectomy, or reduction mammoplasty and processed for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Epithelial structures were detected by supravital staining with methylene blue and isolated by microdissection. Mammary lobules and ductules required bacterial collagenase digestion to remove the covering stroma for optimal visualization. Major histopathological categories were compared and correlated with the characteristics observed with methylene blue supravital staining and light microscopy and/or transmission electron mi

Alterations of the renal papilla during mercuric chloride-induced acute tubular necrosis.

Marked morphologic changes were seen in all structural elements of the renal papilla during mercuric chloride-induced acute tubular necrosis. Expect for the descriptions of increased numbers of leukocytes within the medullary vasa recta, papillary changes have not been described previously. The techniques used in this study included light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The renal interstitial cells developed an extremely irregular contour and were penetrated by large irregular cavelike structures. A marked decrease occurred in the size and number

Scanning electron microscopic findings of the gliding surface of the A1 pulley in trigger fingers and thumbs.

The gliding surface of the A1 pulley was studied in 20 cases of primary trigger finger by scanning and transmission electron microscope. In 12 normal specimens, the whole deep surface was covered uniformly by an amorphous extracellular matrix. In the pathological samples, there was the same general surface appearance but, also, areas, varying in shape and dimension where loss of the extracellular matrix had exposed the collagen fibres and a few cells of the middle layer of the pulley. There were also changes typical of "chondroid-metaplasia". These data were confirmed by transmission electron

Wound repair during arm regeneration in the red starfish Echinaster sepositus.

Starfish can regenerate entire arms following their loss by both autotomic and traumatic amputation. Although the overall regenerative process has been studied several times in different asteroid species, there is still a considerable gap of knowledge as far as the detailed aspects of the repair phase at tissue and cellular level are concerned, particularly in post-traumatic regeneration. The present work is focused on the arm regeneration model in the Mediterranean red starfish Echinaster sepositus; to describe the early cellular mechanisms of arm regeneration following traumatic amputation,

Characterization of Ca-phosphate biological materials by scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) at the Ca L2,3-, P L2,3- and C K-edges.

Several naturally occurring biological materials, including bones and teeth, pathological calcifications, microbial mineral deposits formed in marine phosphogenesis areas, as well as bio-inspired cements used for bone and tooth repair are composed of Ca-phosphates. These materials are usually identified and characterized using bulk-scale analytical tools such as X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy or nuclear magnetic resonance. However, there is a need for imaging techniques that provide information on the spatial distribution and chemical composition of the Ca-phosphate

Gas Sensing Properties of ZnO-SnO2 Nanostructures.

One-dimensional (1D) semiconductor metal oxide nanostructures have attracted increasing attention in electrochemistry, optics, magnetic, and gas sensing fields for the good properties. N-type low dimensional semiconducting oxides such as SnO2 and ZnO have been known for the detection of inflammable or toxic gases. In this paper, we fabricated the ZnO-SnO2 and SnO2 nanoparticles by hydrothermal synthesis. Microstructure characterization was performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and surface morphologies for both the pristine and doped samples were observed using field emission scanning electro

Quantum dot encapsulated nanocolloidal bioconjugates function as bioprobes for in vitro intracellular imaging.

Bioimaging probes incorporating quantum dots (QDs) are important for identifying organelles and monitoring their movement/location in living cells. Organelle specificity can be accomplished by functionalizing probe surfaces with chemical groups that can react with antibodies capable of targeting specific organelle-protein epitopes. Here, such a bioprobe is generated by encapsulating ZnS-capped CdSe QDs within polystyrene (PS) nanocolloids via Pickering miniemulsion using laponite nanoclay platelets as solid-stabilizers. The surfaces of these platelets are modified with aminopropyltriethoxysila

Human senile cataract. Light- and electron-microscopic studies of the morphology of the anterior lens structures, with special reference of anterior capsular/subcapsular opacity.

Light- and electron-microscopic studies of human senile cataractous lenses with and without biomicroscopically detectable anterior capsular/subcapsular opacity (ACSCO) revealed the main difference between the two types of cataract to be in the subepithelial cortex, where ACSCO lenses showed disintegrating cortex fibres, fibres of the deep cortical type and even in some cases collapsed fibres. These findings were considered to be associated with the decomposition and disappearance of the superficial cortex in ACSCO lenses. Numerous mitochondria in the epithelium of ACSCO lenses point towards a

Efficient degradation of rhodamine B by magnetically separable ZnS-ZnFe2O4 composite with the synergistic effect from persulfate.

Novel ZnS-ZnFe2O4 composites were successfully synthesized via a simple and green hydrothermal route. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the synthesized composite proved the presence of both ZnS and ZnFe2O4. The other characteristics of the composites were further characterized in detail using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The performance of ZnS-ZnFe2O4 in the presence of persulfate (PS, K2S2O8) as a co-catalyst was tested for degrading rhodamine B (RhB)

Kinetics of sonophotocatalytic degradation of an anionic dye nigrosine with doped and undoped zinc oxide.

The current research focuses on the photocatalytic, sonocatalytic and sonophotocatalytic degradation of nigrosine dye with nitrogen-doped and undoped zinc oxide powders. The sonophotocatalytic degradation of dye was found to occur at a higher rate than during photo- or sonocatalytic processes. Nitrogen-doped and undoped zinc oxide powders were synthesized by a wet chemical method. Further, scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), electron dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-VIS spectroscopy (UV-VIS) and transmission electron microsco
