Bifenazate is a novel carbazate acaricide discovered by Uniroyal Chemical (now Chemtura Corporation) for the control of phytophagous mites infesting agricultural and ornamental crops. Its acaricidal activity and that of its principal active metabolite, diazene, were characterized. Bifenazate and diazene had high toxicity and specificity both orally and topically to all life stages of Tetranychus urticae and Panonychus citri. Acute poisoning was observed with no temperature dependency. No cross-resistance was found to mites resistant to several other classes of acaricides, such as tebufenpyrad,

The dry bulb mite Aceria tulipae is one of the most economically important pests of Allium crops worldwide, damaging plants during vegetation and bulb storage. Despite its increasing phytosanitary importance, information on the distribution and management of A. tulipae in Ukraine remains limited. This study provides the first confirmed record of the species in the Kyiv region and new data on its biology. The study also provides one of the first evaluations of biorational pesticides against A. tulipae under Ukrainian field and storage conditions, addressing an important gap in environmentally s

Rosacea is a chronic cutaneous disease that manifests with facial erythema, telangiectasia, papules and pustules on the central face. Although the pathogenesis is not well established, rosacea appears to have a close relationship with Demodex mites. The aim of the study was to elucidate the factors influencing Demodex mite density by standardized superficial skin biopsy (SSSB) in patients with rosacea. This prospective, cross-sectional study included 200 patients with rosacea. Clinical characteristics of the patients were recorded and SSSB was used to measure Demodex density (Dd). If Dd was <

The ectoparasites of rodents and other small mammals usually involve five categories of arthropods-fleas, sucking lice, gamasid mites, chigger mites, and occasionally, ticks. These ectoparasites are medically important, serving as vectors for diseases such as plague, murine typhus, scrub typhus, forest encephalitis, Lyme disease, and other zoonoses. Field surveys, collection, and specimen preparation of ectoparasites are crucial for studying taxonomy, faunistics, ecology, and epidemiology. They are also essential for vector surveillance. The present protocol summarizes the on-site monitoring a

The wood warbler, Phylloscopus sibilatrix (Aves: Passeriformes), is a well-known model organism for studying bird migration, breeding habitat selection and nest predation. The nest acarofauna of this bird species has not been extensively studied so far. To provide a comprehensive report on mite species inhabiting wood warbler nests and to assess infestation parameters (prevalence, intensity, and abundance) for mite species and orders, we collected 45 nests of this bird species in the Wielkopolska National Park in western Poland. Analyses revealed a huge diversity (198 species) of mites inhabit

Blends of volatile chemicals emanating from cassava leaves infested by the cassava green mite were found to promote conidiation of Neozygites tanajoae, an entomopathogenic fungus specific to this mite. Methyl salicylate (MeSA) is one compound frequently present in blends of herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPV) as well as that of mite-infested cassava. Here, we investigated the effect of methyl salicylate in its pure form on the production of pre-infective spores (conidia), and the germination of these spores into infective spores (capilliconidia), by a Brazilian isolate and a Beninese isol

The acaricidal efficacy of afoxolaner (NexGard(®), Merial) was evaluated against Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis in a field efficacy study, when administered orally at a minimum dose of 2.5 mg/kg to dogs naturally infested with the mites. Twenty mixed-breed dogs of either sex (6 males and 14 females), aged over 6 months and weighing 4-18 kg, were studied in this randomised controlled field efficacy trial. Dogs, naturally infested with Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis confirmed by skin scrapings collected prior to allocation, were randomly divided into two equal groups. Dogs in Group 1 were not treate

UNLABELLED: Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a common cause of dry eye disease. Demodex mites can cause MGD with symptoms like itching, dryness and general ocular discomfort. It is important to consider infestation with Demodex mites in individuals who are non responsive to traditional MGD treatment but also equally important when cylindrical dandruff is seen at the base of the eye lashes.. We report two individuals who had not responded to ocular and systemic treatment for MGD and were then diagnosed with Demodex mites. Treatment with BlephEx and Tea tree oil was successful. Two new species of Chrysomelobia Regenfuss, 1968, C. alleni n. sp. and C. intrusus n. sp., are described from Tasmanian specimens of the eucalyptus leaf beetle Paropsis charybdis Stål. This beetle is now known to host three species of Chrysomelobia, the other being Chrysomelobia pagurus Seeman, 2008, which is recorded from Tasmania for the first time. Thus, the three species of Paropsis Olivier known to have podapolipid mites each have three mite species from three separate lineages of Chrysomelobia. Collections of P. charybdis in New Zealand (n = 150), where it is an invasive pest species, fa

In 16 out of 18 patients with rosacea, mites of the species, Demodex folliculorum were isolated in mostly great numbers from lesions of the facial skin. In patients with perioral dermatitis, the mite was demonstrated in 17 out of 29 patients. All patients, however, including those where no mites were found, could be completely cured by nightly application of hexachlorocyclohexane 0.25% (Jacutin). The average treatment time was 7 weeks for rosacea and 5 weeks for perioral dermatitis. 2 patients with rosacea and 4 patients with perioral dermatitis relapsed, but cleared again after treatment was

The aetiological importance of the house-dust mite, Dermatophagoides sp., was examined in 133 asthmatic children referred to hospital. Evidence of sensitization to this allergen from positive skin tests and the presence of circulating specific IgE was found in the majority of these children and sensitization often began in the preschool years. In vitro studies of specific IgE levels were found to bear a close relation to nasal provocation tests and probably have an important place in the identification of offending allergens in the paediatric patient. Ecological studies of the house-dust mite

The occurrence, species diversity and some aspects of taxonomical affinity and host selectivity of acaropathogenic fungi associated with phytophagous, saprotrophic and predacious mites in Poland and other European countries were investigated on wild and cultivated plants, in insect feeding sites under the bark and in decayed wood. From among 33 species of fungi affecting mites only five species of Entomophthorales were separated and the most numerous were Neozygites floridana mostly on Tetranychus urticae, N. abacaridis on a few eriophyid species, and Conidiobolus coronatus attacking gamasid m

Human skin equivalents (HSEs) were used as a model to investigate interleukin (IL)-1 alpha and IL-1 beta secretions by keratinocytes stimulated by Sarcoptes scabiei (SS). SS mites burrowed into the stratum corneum when placed on the surface of cultured HSEs. Mites lived for 14 days. Mites and mite products induced cells in the HSEs to secrete IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta within 16 hr. Scabies mites induced production of greater amounts of IL-1 alpha than IL-1 beta. Hepatocyte growth factor in the culture medium at 3 and 30 ng/ml upregulated the secretions of both IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta by mite-i

INTRODUCTION: Canine sarcoptic mange is a highly contagious parasitic skin disease of dogs. On the basis of previous in vitro investigations confirming the acaricidal activity of clove oil, this study evaluated the safety and efficacy of topical clove oil for the treatment of dogs naturally infested with Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis.
METHODS: A total of 100 naturally infected dogs were randomly assigned to 7% clove oil-treated groups, a positive control group, and an untreated control group. Therapeutic efficacy was assessed using mite counts, reduction rates, and clinical scores.

Eutarsopolipus (Acari: Podapolipidae) is a large genus of mites parasitic in the subelytral space of carabid beetles. Herein, I explore the species radiations of Eutarsopolipus on the pterostichine genera Castelnaudia and Notonomus found in the rainforests of eastern Australia. Castelnaudia has an extraordinary radiation of podapolipid mite species, with most beetle species carrying multiple species of mites unique to each host. In contrast, each Notonomus species had just one species of Eutarsopolipus (with the exception of a single male mite of another species), and in four of the five host

The rickettsial pathogen Orientia tsutsugamushi, causing scrub typhus, has been implicated as a major cause of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) in many places in India including Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh. Seasonal abundance of the principal vector mite of the pathogen, Leptotrombidium deliense, its animal hosts, and prevalence of infection on them are important attributes in the assessment of outbreaks of the disease. Hence, these aspects were investigated, seasonally, in rural villages of Gorakhpur district, where peak incidence of AES cases were reported. A total of 903 animals (r

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a parasitic skin infestation caused by the burrowing mite Sarcoptes scabiei. It is common worldwide and spreads rapidly under crowded conditions, such as those found in socially disadvantaged communities of Indigenous populations and in developing countries. Pruritic scabies lesions facilitate opportunistic bacterial infections, particularly Group A streptococci. Streptococcal infections cause significant sequelae and the increased community streptococcal burden has led to extreme levels of acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease in Australia's Indigenous commu

The sheep scab mite, Psoroptes ovis, induces an intensely pruritic exudative dermatitis which is responsible for restlessness, loss of appetite and weight loss. Within the first 24 h of infection, there is a rapid inflammatory influx of eosinophils and apoptosis of the keratinocytes at the site of infection. The former cell type is capable of a sustained respiratory burst, toxic products of which may directly damage the mite and also contribute to lesion formation. Analysis of a P. ovis expressed sequence tag (EST) database identified a number of antioxidant enzyme-encoding sequences, includin

Stray cats collected from Georgetown, Penang from 2008 to 2010 were screened for ectoparasites via fine-tooth combing. Two cats from a total 102 examined were infested with the dog louse, Heterodoxus spiniger. Both cats, a juvenile male and female were found in close contact with each other prior to capture. The number of lice ranged from 5 and 14 in the male and female cat respectively. Other ectoparasites recovered included the common cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis, one louse species Felicola subrostratus, one tick species Haemaphysalis bispinosa and one mite species of Listrophoridae. Tropilaelaps mercedesae is an emerging parasite of Apis mellifera L. that is expanding beyond its traditional tropical range, yet its ecology in temperate regions remains poorly understood. This study investigated the establishment, seasonal infestation dynamics, morphometric variation, and virus carriage of T. mercedesae populations in three climatically contrasting regions of temperate Eurasia: Sochi and Makhachkala (Russia) and Zhetisay (Kazakhstan). Honey bee colonies were monitored throughout the annual cycle to assess infestation in relation to brood availability and seasonal climatic co
