Validation of World Guideline gait speed and TUG cut-offs for fall risk stratification in ambulatory nursing home residents aged ≥ 80 years: a multicenter cross-sectional diagnostic study.

BACKGROUND: Falls are highly prevalent among nursing home residents, particularly among adults aged ≥ 80 years. The World Guidelines for Falls Prevention and Management recommend gait speed ≤ 0.8 m/s and Timed Up and Go (TUG) > 15 s as risk thresholds; however, their discriminatory validity in ambulatory institutionalized populations remains insufficiently examined. OBJECTIVE: To validate the discriminatory performance and clinical utility of guideline-recommended gait speed (≤ 0.8 m/s) and TUG (> 15 s) thresholds for fall risk stratification among ambulatory nursing home residents aged ≥ 80 y

Comparing Disaster-Related Surge Staffing Practices Across Rural and Non-Rural Nursing Homes.

BACKGROUND: Clarifying whether rural and non-rural nursing homes implement different disaster-related staffing approaches is vital to developing targeted preparedness strategies. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study of 361 nursing homes exposed to Hurricane Michael (2018), we used a comparative interrupted time series design to assess changes in staffing intensity and composition from 30 days before landfall to 7 days after. We examined three outcomes using the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Payroll Based Journal: total staffing intensity (hours per resident per day), l

Do nurse sows and foster litters have impaired animal welfare? Results from a cross-sectional study in sow herds.

Increasing litter size has led to introduction of so-called nurse sows in several EU countries. A nurse sow is a sow receiving piglets after having weaned her own piglets and thereby experiencing an extended lactation. In order to analyse whether nurse sows have more welfare problems than non-nurse sows a cross-sectional study was conducted in 57 sow herds in Denmark. Clinical observations were made on nurse and non-nurse sows and their litters. The clinical observations were dichotomized and the effect of being a nurse sow was analysed based on eight parameters: thin (body condition score<2.5

Medication-Related Errors Among Nurses by Unit Adaptation Levels: Bayesian Network-Based Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: Medical errors occur more frequently in health care than in other industries due to challenges in patient safety education for nurses and students. To address this, it is important to identify the factors and structures underlying clinical errors and apply these insights to educational programs. Medication-related errors are highly preventable with appropriate interventions, highlighting the importance of data-driven safety education. Previous research suggests that unit adaptation, rather than clinical experience alone, plays a critical role in error occurrence. Focusing on "adapt

Nursing Workloads and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms Among Chinese Female Nurses: The Mediating Role of Delayed Voiding Behaviors.

PURPOSE: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are a challenge to the healthy nursing workforce. Nurses confront various objective and subjective nursing workloads which contribute to their LUTS, but less is known about how nursing workloads influence their LUTS. This study is designed to test hypotheses that delayed voiding behaviors mediate the relationships between nursing workloads and LUTS in female nurses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study analyzed the baseline data collected from an ongoing cohort study named Nurse Urinary Related Health Study in China. LUTS of nurses in 20 tertiary hosp

A nursing process for self-management support in home healthcare: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Nurses play a key role in providing self-management support to people living with long-term health conditions. Home healthcare patients often face difficulties self-managing because of disabilities and multi-morbidities. In addition, providing healthcare in patients' homes comes with specific challenges since the healthcare providers have less control over the care environment. Therefore, home healthcare is an ideal setting for investigating how nurses provide self-management support in complicated situations. AIM: This study focuses on the process and activities nurses undertake

Psychobiological risk factors for insomnia and depressed mood among hospital female nurses working shifts.

INTRODUCTION: Despite a vast body of knowledge on the associations between insomnia and depression, and although women and shift workers are at high risk for each of these conditions separately, common psychobiological risk factors for developing insomnia and depressed mood concomitantly in high-functioning shift-working female nurses have yet to be investigated within a comprehensive framework. This study examines the contribution of shift work (disruption of circadian rhythms), stress, analytical rumination, and morningness-eveningness on the development of insomnia and depressed mood among

Identification of strategies to optimize pain management in people with dementia living in nursing homes using nominal group technique.

INTRODUCTION: Pain management for people with dementia is widely recognized as a challenge for healthcare personnel. Multifactorial and comprehensive person-centered care models that recognize individual abilities and resources are warranted but remain lacking in nursing homes. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive perspective on how pain management for people with dementia living in nursing homes can be conducted in a way that includes and supports their individual resources. METHODS: We conducted eight group interviews with a total of 28 nurses providing care for people with dementia
