Moral Disengagement Mechanisms in Image-Based Sexual Abuse Against Women: The Role of Age and Gender.

Image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) is an increasingly prevalent problem that disproportionately affects women. Understanding the psychological processes related to this behavior is essential for its prevention. Accordingly, the present study examines the activation of moral disengagement mechanisms in IBSA contexts by considering the role of gender and age across the lifespan. Specifically, by using a vignette-based methodology, this study investigates which moral disengagement mechanisms are activated in scenarios of sextortion and non-consensual intimate image sharing (NCIIS) involving male-per

Understanding moral trade-offs in pandemic response: A discrete choice experiment on avian influenza policies.

Pandemic preparedness requires navigating trade-offs between health, economic, and social impacts; choices that often involve moral tensions. This study investigates how the Dutch public evaluates such trade-offs in the context of a potential outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Using a discrete choice experiment (DCE) administered to a representative sample of 1,045 respondents from the LISS panel, we examined preferences across six policy outcomes: mortality, lasting physical and mental injuries, postponed healthcare, social restrictions, and one-off tax payments. A latent c

Nurse work environment, missed nursing care, moral distress, and burnout among ICU nurses.

OBJECTIVES: To test whether missed nursing care and moral distress mediate the association between the nurse work environment and burnout among adult ICU nurses. METHODS: This study used data from 4258 direct care nurses in adult ICUs from the 2024 Penn Nurses4All Study. Structural equation modeling with serial multiple mediation examined direct and indirect associations between the work environment and burnout through missed nursing care and moral distress, adjusting for nurse characteristics. RESULTS: Nurses averaged 14.1 years of experience (SD = 11.4); most were female (2429; 79.6%), wor

Deontological Guilt Differentially Affects Moral Behaviour in Participants With and Without Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterised by a dysfunctional sensitivity to a sense of guilt that significantly interferes with everyday functioning and is believed to be a key mechanism in symptom maintenance. Mounting evidence indicates that individuals with OCD are particularly sensitive to deontological guilt, which stems from the perception of violating an internalised rule, as opposed to altruistic guilt, which arises from the feeling of having harmed others. Here, we assess the impact of deontological vs. altruistic guilt on moral behaviour in participants with OCD. Twenty pa

Moral inference under stress: When we doubt our beliefs about good people.

Stress shapes how we perceive and interpret the world and may also influence how we evaluate other people. Do we learn differently about others' moral character under stress? Recent computational models suggest that moral inference relies on Bayesian learning, where beliefs about others are updated in proportion to their uncertainty. We hypothesized that acute stress increases belief volatility - reflecting heightened uncertainty and flexible updating. In this preregistered study, participants (n = 122; 50% female) underwent the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) or a control manipulation before

Lived Experiences of Moral Disengagement Among Intensive Care and Emergency Department Nurses: A Phenomenological Study.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the experiences of nurses involved in moral disengagement is essential for ensuring high-quality care and maintaining a skilled healthcare workforce. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to examine how nurses experience moral disengagement as a cognitive strategy used to defy moral standards. METHODS: A phenomenological perspective was taken, with nine nurses from three different teaching hospitals participating in semi-structured interviews with the researchers. RESULTS: The transcripts were analyzed using Van Manen's phenomenological approach to thematic an

Surgeon Perception and Attitude Toward the Moral Imperative of Institutionally Addressing Second Victim Syndrome in Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Second victim syndrome (SVS) is described as when healthcare providers encounter significant moral distress after traumatic patient care events. Although broadly recognized in medicine, this remains underrecognized in surgery, and no systemic approaches exist to mitigate potential harms of SVS among surgeons. When SVS is left unaddressed, surgeons not only suffer personal psychological harm but their ability to care for future patients can also be compromised. The aim was to examine surgeons' perceptions and attitudes regarding mitigation of SVS. STUDY DESIGN: This study was condu

A unified model of military moral experience during deployment: Initial evidence from U.S. soldiers.

Large scale combat operations (LSCO) are anticipated to expose service members to challenging, high-stakes scenarios with significant moral implications. Potentially morally injurious events and the psychological harms associated with moral injury among military personnel have been well-documented, but the possibility of positive experiences arising from morally charged experiences has been given less attention. In the present study, we explore a novel construct - the potentially morally elevating experience (PMEE) - that constitutes a positively-oriented parallel to the potentially morally in

Peer Interdependence in Bullying Victimization, Self-Compassion, and Moral Disengagement: A Dyadic Analysis of Early Adolescents.

Moral disengagement plays a critical role in adolescents' social adjustment, and growing evidence suggests that peer characteristics may be linked to its development. However, limited research has explored how best friend's adverse experiences and emotion regulation strategies relate to adolescents' moral strategies. Bullying victimization and self-compassion, as salient adverse experiences and emotion regulation processes during adolescence, have been associated with moral disengagement, but the interpersonal patterns of these associations remain unclear. To address this gap, the present stud

The impact of adolescent clinical depression and depressive symptoms on moral thinking: based on process dissociation approach.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical period for moral development, and depression significantly impacts this process by altering cognitive and emotional processing, affecting the resolution of moral dilemmas. Rumination, closely linked to depression, also influences emotional and cognitive processing during moral judgments. METHODS: Study 1 examined 34 depressed adolescents and 36 healthy controls who completed the Beck Depression Inventory-Short Form and Beck Anxiety Inventory, followed by 20 moral dilemmas from the Process Dissociation (PD) procedure. Study 2 (n = 568) explored subclinical

Multidimensional profiles of head start preschoolers' moral self-concept predict subsequent, but not concurrent, aggression.

The moral self-concept (MSC) describes how children view themselves as moral agents. Research suggests that the MSC may relate to moral behavior, yet little is known about how MSC relates to moral behavior in preschoolers. One hundred six low-income children (M age = 52.78 months, SD = 6.61 months) and their teachers participated in this study. In the fall, children completed a MSC puppet task measure. In the fall and spring, teachers reported via children's survey prosocial behavior and aggressive behavior. We used a person-centered approach to identify profiles of MSC, which revealed two pro

The vaccination divide: Exploring moral reasoning associated with intergroup antipathy between vaccinated and unvaccinated people.

OBJECTIVES: There is growing evidence of intergroup hostility between vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, a process of polarization that threatens to derail population health efforts. This study explores the moral underpinnings of intergroup antipathy between vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. DESIGN: A cross-sectional design was employed to investigate the associations between the view of vaccination as a social contract or individual choice, perceived vulnerability to disease, perceptions of outgroup morality, feelings of warmth, and experiences of schadenfreude. METHODS: Data w

Moral injury and associated context, contributors and consequences within mental healthcare professionals: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to examine the contributory factors as well as consequences of moral injury amongst healthcare workers within mental healthcare settings. METHODS: Several databases were searched for relevant studies from database inception until May 2023. Keywords and concepts included moral injury and distress in mental healthcare and psychiatry. We identified 961 studies, of which 48 were assessed for eligibility. Eventually, 35 studies were included in the review. Papers were selected for inclusion if 1) they included mental healthcare professionals (MHP) regardless of practice setti

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Moral Injury Among Ukrainian Civilians During the Ongoing War.

While severity of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and moral injury among civilians affected by armed conflicts is generally understudied, even less research exists on civilian populations during an active war. This paper reports a large-scale study that administered standard assessments of PTSD and moral injury severity, as well as rich demographic questionnaires, to nearly 1300 Ukrainian civilians during the ongoing Russian invasion. Analyses revealed an extremely high prevalence of severe PTSD symptoms and moral injury, relative to both proposed clinical cut-offs and to earlie

Moral disengagement, self-control and callous-unemotional traits as predictors of cyberbullying: a moderated mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Cyberbullying has become more prevalent, more difficult to detect, and more harmful to the victims. Whereas considerable prior work has investigated predictors and consequences of cyberbullying, additional research is needed to better understand the mechanisms by which these factors relate to cyberbullying perpetration and victimization. The goal of the present study was to examine the extent to which the link between individual differences in moral disengagement and cyberbullying perpetration is mediated by low self-control and, if so, whether this mediation effect varies by indiv

Differential associations of rumination and cognitive flexibility with guilt and shame following potentially morally injurious events.

BACKGROUND: Guilt and shame are common moral emotions following potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs), which involve events that violate one's deeply held moral values. However, not all individuals will experience guilt and shame following PMIEs and the mechanisms by which PMIEs lead to guilt and shame are not well understood. This study set out to examine the role of event-related intrusive rumination, event-related deliberate rumination, cognitive flexibility, and their interactions, in predicting PMIE-related guilt and shame. METHODS: A subsample of undergraduate participants expose

Shaping Citizenship in the Classroom: Peer Influences on Moral Disengagement, Social Goals, and a Sense of Peer Community.

Despite the important role of peers in the social process of classroom citizenship, the peer influence related to moral disengagement, social goals, and a sense of peer community remain unclear. To this end, it was examined to what extent youth become similar to their friends in moral disengagement, social goals, and a sense of peer community. Participants were 283 South Korean third to sixth graders (Mage = 9.60 years, SD = 0.97; 51.6% girls) who completed an online survey for moral disengagement, social goals, the sense of peer community and friendship network across the beginning (Time 1) a

Pastoral Narrative Disclosure: The Development and Evaluation of an Australian Chaplaincy Intervention Strategy for Addressing Moral Injury.

This paper describes the development and initial chaplaincy user evaluation of 'Pastoral Narrative Disclosure' (PND) as a rehabilitation strategy developed for chaplains to address moral injury among veterans. PND is an empirically informed and integrated intervention comprising eight stages of pastoral counselling, guidance and education that was developed by combining two previously existing therapeutic techniques, namely Litz et al's (2017) 'Adaptive Disclosure' and 'Confessional Practice' (Joob & Kettunen, 2013). The development and results of PND can be categorized into five phases. Phase

Moral Injury and Recovery in Uniformed Professionals: Lessons From Conversations Among International Students and Experts.

INTRODUCTION: In the course of service, military members, leaders, and uniformed professionals are at risk of exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs). Serious mental health consequences including Moral Injury (MI) and Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can result. Guilt, shame, spiritual/existential conflict, and loss of trust are described as core symptoms of MI. These can overlap with anxiety, anger, re-experiencing, self-harm, and social problems commonly seen in PTSD. The experiences of General (retired) Romeo Dallaire and other international experts who have led in tim
