Effects of proposed preflight adaptation training on eye movements, self-motion perception, and motion sickness: a progress report.

A program has been initiated to develop apparatus and procedures to preadapt astronauts to the sensory rearrangement associated with weightlessness in spaceflight. If space motion sickness is a consequence of adaptation to that sensory rearrangement, preflight training could afford astronauts significant relief from the motion sickness. The preflight adaptation trainer (PAT) was designed to produce rearranged relationships between visual and otolith signals analogous to those experienced in space. Investigations have been undertaken with three prototype trainers. The results indicated that exp…

Motion Syros: tradipitant effective in the treatment of motion sickness; a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: Motion sickness has afflicted travelers since ancient times. Neurokinin-1 (NK1) receptor antagonists have therapeutic potential as treatments for the symptoms of motion sickness due to the widespread expression of NK1 receptors throughout important locations in the emetic pathway in the network of brainstem nuclei and the gut. This study evaluated the efficacy of tradipitant, a novel NK1 receptor antagonist, in preventing motion sickness symptoms in variable sea conditions. METHODS: A total of 365 adult participants with a history of motion sickness embarked on boat trips under …

Motion sickness: Multiple linear regression identifies behaviours linked to motion-induced emesis in Suncus murinus (house musk shrew).

Motion sickness (MS) is a complex syndrome characterized by a spectrum of autonomic and behavioural symptoms, often accompanied by emesis. Suncus murinus has become a primary species in which to study the mechanisms of emesis control, yet the behavioural profile associated with motion-induced malaise of this animal has not been thoroughly assessed. In this study, we exposed 129 animals to provocative motion (1 Hz, 4-cm horizontal reciprocating displacement, 30 min) to induce MS and systematically recorded spontaneous behaviours, retching and/or vomiting (R/V), and changes in body surface and t…

The effects of motion direction, body axis, and posture on motion sickness induced by low frequency linear oscillation.

BACKGROUND: A recent experiment demonstrated that low frequency linear oscillation through the Z-axis of the body was more nauseogenic when applied in the vertical direction, with subjects seated upright, than in the horizontal direction, with subjects supine. HYPOTHESIS: The nauseogenicity of low frequency linear oscillatory motion is dependent on direction of motion with respect to the gravity vector, orientation of body axis with respect to motion, and body posture. METHODS: The following conditions were compared: A) seated upright, with horizontal motion, X-axis; B) seated upright, with

Orexin-A attenuated motion sickness through modulating neural activity in hypothalamus nuclei.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We evaluated the hypothesis that central orexin application could counteract motion sickness responses through regulating neural activity in target brain areas. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Thec effects of intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of orexin-A and SB-334867 (OX1 antagonist) on motion sickness-induced anorexia, nausea-like behaviour (conditioned gaping), hypoactivity and hypothermia were investigated in rats subjected to Ferris wheel-like rotation. Orexin-A responsive brain areas were identified using Fos immunolabelling and were verified via motion sickness …

Masseteric vestibular evoked myogenic potentials findings in individuals with motion sickness susceptibility.

BackgroundMotion sickness (MS) is a clinical condition that causes autonomic symptoms as a result of a mismatch in sensory inputs with unusual body and environmental movements. Although the cause of MS is not clearly established, one widely accepted theory is otolith asymmetry and canal-otolith conflict. Masseteric vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (mVEMPs) are short latency inhibitory potentials recorded from the bilateral masseter muscle in response to bilateral or unilateral galvanic/acoustic stimuli. Studies have shown that mVEMP evaluates the integrity of the vestibulo-trigeminal path…

Dynamic Multi-modal Fusion for Biosignal-based Motion Sickness Prediction in Vehicles.

With the advent of autonomous vehicles, motion sickness (MS) has emerged as a significant issue, affecting the comfort and safety of drivers and passengers. However, traditional MS research, often confined to simulations or manual data analysis, does not fully capture real-world complexities. Therefore, the significance of multi-biosignal fusion, which can reflect the complexity and utility of data, is underscored. In this study, we propose a novel dynamic multi-modal fusion for the MS classification (DMFMS) framework. DMFMS adaptively focuses on significant samples by evaluating data quality …

Pharmacological and non-pharmacological countermeasures to Space Motion Sickness: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Space Motion Sickness (SMS) is a syndrome that affects around 70% of astronauts and includes symptoms of nausea, dizziness, fatigue, vertigo, headaches, vomiting, and cold sweating. Consequences range from discomfort to severe sensorimotor and cognitive incapacitation, which might cause potential problems for mission-critical tasks and astronauts and cosmonauts' well-being. Both pharmacological and non-pharmacological countermeasures have been proposed to mitigate SMS. However, their effectiveness has not been systematically evaluated. Here we present the first systematic review …

A Deep Motion Sickness Predictor Induced by Visual Stimuli in Virtual Reality.

In a virtual reality (VR) environment, where visual stimuli predominate over other stimuli, the user experiences cybersickness because the balance of the body collapses due to self-motion. Accordingly, the VR experience is accompanied by unavoidable sickness referred to as visually induced motion sickness (VIMS). In this article, our primary purpose is to simultaneously estimate the VIMS score by referring to the content and calculate the temporally induced VIMS sensitivity. To seek our goals, we propose a novel architecture composed of two consecutive networks: 1) neurological representation …

Vibro-motor Reprocessing Therapy towards Managing Motion Sickness Reduction: Evidence from EEG.

This study examines the neural activities of participants undergoing vibro-motor reprocessing therapy (VRT) while experiencing motion sickness. We evaluated the efficacy of vibro-motor reprocessing therapy, a novel therapeutic technique based on eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), in reducing motion sickness. Based on visually induced motion sickness in two sets of performed sessions, eight participants were exposed to VRT stimulation in a VRT/non-VRT setting. Simultaneously, brain activity changes were recorded using electroencephalography (EEG) at baseline and during stimul…

Formulation of sublingual promethazine hydrochloride tablets for rapid relief of motion sickness.

The delivery of antihistaminic agents via the oral route is problematic, especially for elderly patients. This study aimed to develop a sublingual formulation of promethazine hydrochloride by direct compression, and to mask its intensely bitter taste. Promethazine hydrochloride (PMZ) sublingual tablets prepared by direct compression were optimized using Box-Behnken full factorial design. The effect of a taste-masking agent (Eudragit E 100, X1), superdisintegrant (crospovidone; CPV, X2) and lubricant (sodium stearyl fumarate; SSF, X3) on sublingual tablets' attributes (responses, Y) was optimiz
