Exposure to early life social complexity shapes vasopressin and galanin neural expression in the communal spiny mouse.

Early life social experiences shape the development of neural and behavioral phenotypes that persist into adulthood. Although prior research in rodents has demonstrated that early life isolation induces a variety of behavioral deficits, less work has assessed how increased social complexity during early life influences the neuroendocrine mechanisms of social behavior. The spiny mouse (Acomys dimidiatus) is ideal for examining the impact of rearing on offspring neurodevelopment. Spiny mice exhibit communal rearing in the wild, and thus young are exposed to non-kin during early life. Because spi

Reproductive Coercion and Abuse Among Forcibly Displaced Populations Worldwide: Evidence from a Systematic Review.

Reproductive coercion and abuse (RCA) is a significant public health issue, with high prevalence expected in forcibly displaced populations. Despite its severe health impacts, studies on the extent, determinants, and impacts of RCA in forcibly displaced populations are notably lacking. This systematic review examines forcibly displaced women's experiences of RCA, its perpetrators, associated factors, and health consequences. We conducted a systematic search across nine databases-Medline, CINAHL, Web of Science, PsycINFO, Embase, Global Health, Scopus, Emcare, and SocIndex-on July 30, 2024, usi

Lactobacillus reuteri or Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG intervention facilitates gut barrier function, decreases corticosterone and ameliorates social behavior in LPS-exposed offspring.

Probiotic therapy with Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus rhamnosus (LGG) demonstrates potential as an adjunctive treatment for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In a rat model of ASD induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection during pregnancy, we evaluated the effects of these probiotics on offspring. Administration of L. reuteri or LGG for three weeks post-birth improved social deficits and reduced anxiety in LPS-exposed rats. Additionally, probiotics significantly modified short-chain fatty acid profiles, increasing butyric acid levels and decreasing propionic acid levels. They also e

Heart disease in pregnancy and risk of pre-eclampsia: a Swedish register-based study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pre-eclampsia complicates 3-5% of pregnancies worldwide and is associated with adverse outcomes for the mother and the offspring. Pre-eclampsia and heart failure have common risk factors, including hypertension, obesity and diabetes. It is not known whether heart failure increases the risk of pre-eclampsia. This study examines whether pregestational heart failure increases the risk of pre-eclampsia. METHODS: In a registry-based case-cohort study that included all pregnancies in Sweden (n=3 125 527) between 1990 and 2019, all pregnancies with pre-eclampsia (n=90 354) were

The burgeoning cardiovascular disease epidemic in Indians - perspectives on contextual factors and potential solutions.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death and disability in India. The CVD epidemic in Indians is characterized by a higher relative risk burden, an earlier age of onset, higher case fatality and higher premature deaths. For decades, researchers have been trying to understand the reason for this increased burden and propensity of CVD among Indians. It can partly be explained by population-level changes and the remaining by increased inherent biological risk. While increased biological risk can be attributed to phenotypic changes caused by early life influences, six major tra

Strategies for intra-amniotic administration of fetal therapy in a rabbit model of intrauterine growth restriction.

Intrauterine growth restriction affects up to 10% of all pregnancies, leading to fetal programming with detrimental consequences for lifelong health. However, no therapeutic strategies have so far been effective to ameliorate these consequences. Our previous study has demonstrated that a single dose of nutrients administered into the amniotic cavity, bypassing the often dysfunctional placenta via intra-amniotic administration, improved survival at birth but not birthweight in an intrauterine growth restriction rabbit model. The aim of this study was to further develop an effective strategy for

Association between maternal pregestational diabetes mellitus and spina bifida: A population-based case-control study, Finland, 2000-2014.

BACKGROUND: Maternal pregestational diabetes mellitus (PGDM) is a known risk factor for neural tube defects. We examined the association between maternal PGDM and spina bifida in the offspring using PGDM status from medical records in Finland. METHODS: We conducted a nationally representative, multiregistry, population-based case-control study in Finland. Cases were included if they were live or stillborn infants and diagnosed with spina bifida and delivered between years 2000 and 2014 in Finland. Controls were Finnish infants without spina bifida or other major structural birth defects and d

Defense Mechanisms of Pregnant Mothers Predict Attachment Security, Social-Emotional Competence, and Behavior Problems in Their Toddlers.

OBJECTIVE: For at-risk (single parent, low income, low support) mothers, healthy adaptation and the ability to manage stress have clear implications for parenting and the social-emotional well-being of their young offspring. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to examine associations between defense mechanisms in pregnant women and their toddlers' attachment security, social-emotional, and behavioral adjustment. METHOD: Participants were 84 pregnant women during their last trimester of pregnancy, recruited from community agencies primarily serving low-income families. Women were follow

Insufficient maternal gestational weight gain and infant neurodevelopment at 12 months of age: the Japan Environment and Children's Study.

Abnormal maternal gestational weight gain (GWG) increases the risk of obstetric-related complications. This investigation examined the impact of GWG on infant neurodevelopmental abnormalities at 12 months of age using the data of a nationwide Japanese cohort study. Questionnaire data were obtained from the ongoing Japan Environment and Children's Study cohort study. Maternal GWG was subdivided as below, within, or above the reference values of the Institution of Medicine pregnancy weight guidelines. The Ages and Stages Questionnaire, third edition (ASQ-3) is a parent-reported developmental scr

'Vanishing twin syndrome' following frozen embryo transfer has no detrimental effects on offspring growth and development up to 3 years.

CONTEXT: Vanishing twin syndrome (VTS) is a common condition in assisted reproductive procedures, where a multi-fetus pregnancy is spontaneously reduced to a singleton pregnancy. However, the effects of VTS on the development of the remaining fetus is relatively unknown. AIMS: The purpose of this study was to estimate the effect of VTS on the dynamic measurement of growth and development of the singletons (0-3 years) born from frozen embryo transfer (FET). METHODS: This study was a retrospective cohort design and was carried out from January 2017 to December 2023. To optimize statistical eff

Salivary cortisol, progesterone, and estradiol levels across the perinatal period and associations with depressive symptoms.

Depression during pregnancy and postpartum has impacts on both the birthing parent and offspring. This period is characterized by changes in which stress (e.g., cortisol) and reproductive hormone (e.g., progesterone and estradiol) levels gradually increase across pregnancy and decrease rapidly postpartum, but there are mixed associations of cortisol, progesterone, and estradiol levels with depressive symptoms. Prior studies typically have focused on single hormones across time or multiple hormones at a single time point. The present study aimed to expand the literature by examining patterns of

Provision of a liquefied petroleum gas cookstove and fuel during pregnancy and infancy and linear growth trajectories between birth and 12 months: Evidence from the multi-center Household Air Pollution Intervention Network (HAPIN) trial.

Exposure to particulate pollution from cooking with solid biomass fuels is associated with impaired child linear growth. We examined the effect of a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cookstove randomized controlled trial during pregnancy and infancy on linear growth trajectories among infants born to women enrolled during pregnancy. The Household Air Pollution Intervention Network (HAPIN) randomized controlled trial enrolled 3195 pregnant women (9 to <20 weeks' gestation) from rural areas in Guatemala, Peru, India, and Rwanda who relied primarily on biomass fuels for cooking. Women in the interven

Clinical and Cytogenetic Impact of Maternal Balanced Double Translocation: A Familial Case of 15q11.2 Microduplication and Microdeletion Syndromes with Genetic Counselling Implications.

BACKGROUND: Balanced chromosomal translocations occur in approximately 0.16 to 0.20% of live births. While most carriers are phenotypically normal, they are at risk of generating unbalanced gametes during meiosis, leading to genetic anomalies such as aneuploidies, deletions, duplications, and gene disruptions. These anomalies can result in spontaneous abortions or congenital anomalies, including neurodevelopmental disorders. Complex chromosomal rearrangements (CCRs) involving more than two chromosomes are rare but further increase the probability of producing unbalanced gametes. Neurodevelopme

Hyperglycemia in pregnancy did not worsen the short-term outcomes of very preterm infants: a propensity score matching study.

BACKGROUND: Hyperglycemia in pregnancy (HGP) has generally been considered a risk factor associated with adverse outcomes in offspring, but its impact on the short-term outcomes of very preterm infants remains unclear. METHODS: A secondary analysis was performed based on clinical data collected prospectively from 28 hospitals in seven regions of China from September 2019 to December 2020. According to maternal HGP, all infants were divided into the HGP group or the non-HGP group. A propensity score matching analysis was used to adjust for confounding factors, including gestational age, twin o

Monitoring of health status, performance and transcript abundance of some genes in dairy heifers produced by embryo transfer or artificial insemination.

The use of multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET) technology in the dairy cattle industry has increased dramatically in recent decades for the production of offspring from genetically superior cows. Yet, its long-term ramifications on adult performance have not been adequately clarified. Therefore, this study targeted comparing dairy heifers born after the transfer of in vivo-produced embryos (MOET-heifers, n = 400) and those born after artificial insemination (AI-heifers, n = 340). The performance of MOET-heifers and AI-heifers was compared from birth till completion of the first lacta

Effects of Prenatal Exposure to Bisphenol A Substitutes, Bisphenol S and Bisphenol F, on Offspring's Health: Evidence from Epidemiological and Experimental Studies.

Pregnancy and lactation are critical periods for human well-being and are sensitive windows for pollutant exposure. Bisphenol A (BPA) is well demonstrated as a toxicant and has been replaced in the plastic industry with other bisphenol analogs that share similarities in structure and characteristics, most commonly Bisphenol S (BPS) and Bisphenol F (BPF). Maternal exposure to BPS or BPF can result in their accumulation in the fetal compartment, leading to chronic exposure and potentially limiting normal fetal growth and development. This review summarizes considerable findings of epidemiologica

Relationship between maternal exposure to heavy metal titanium and offspring congenital heart defects in Lanzhou, China: A nested case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found that exposure to heavy metals increased the incidence of congenital heart defects (CHDs). However, there is a paucity of information about the connection between exposure to titanium and CHDs. This study sought to examine the relationship between prenatal titanium exposure and the risk of CHDs in offspring. METHODS: We looked back on a birth cohort study that was carried out in our hospital between 2010 and 2012. The associations between titanium exposure and the risk of CHDs were analyzed by using logistic regression analysis to investigate titanium co
