Fatigue following mild traumatic brain injury relates to visual processing and effort perception in the context of motor performance.

INTRODUCTION: Following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), a substantial number of patients experience disabling fatigue for months after the initial injury. To date, the underlying mechanisms of fatigue remain unclear. Recently, it was shown that mTBI patients with persistent fatigue do not demonstrate increased performance fatigability (i.e., objective performance decline) during a sustained motor task. However, it is not known whether the neural activation required to sustain this performance is altered after mTBI. METHODS: Blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) fMRI data were acquired from

Physical and mental fatigue in myasthenia gravis and its correlation with other symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Muscle weakness and easy fatigability are the clinical hallmarks of myasthenia gravis (MG). However, fatigue perception, which can be seen quite often in myasthenic patients, and its effect on the quality of life, irrespective of motor deficit, has not been elucidated yet. The aim is to evaluate the frequency of fatigue in myasthenic patients with nearly full muscle strength and the effect of fatigue on quality of life by assessing its correlation with other symptoms. METHODS: Fifty-three patients with ocular or mild generalized MG in remission or minimal manifestations complete

Characterization of muscle strength and mobility in oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Muscle weakness, and its association with mobility limitations, has received little study in oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD) using quantitative and standardized assessments. The objectives of this study were to (1) document upper and lower limb muscle strength, upper limb functions, fatigue, and mobility capacities; (2) compare them with reference values and across participant age groups; and (3) explore associations between muscle strength, fatigue, and mobility capacities among adults with OPMD. METHODS: Thirty-four participants were included in this cross-secti

Accuracy, completeness and hallucinations in large language model generated statements and references for common rhinologic disorders.

This article critically discusses whether accumulation of lactic acid, or in reality lactate and/or hydrogen (H+) ions, is a major cause of skeletal muscle fatigue, i.e. decline of muscle force or power output leading to impaired exercise performance. There exists a long history of studies on the effects of increased lactate/H+ concentrations in muscle or plasma on contractile performance of skeletal muscle. Evidence suggesting that lactate/H+ is a culprit has been based on correlation-type studies, which reveal close temporal relationships between intramuscular lactate or H+ accumulation and …

Neck Kinematics and Electromyography While Wearing Head Supported Mass During Running.

BACKGROUND: Advanced combat helmets (ACH) coupled with night-vision goggles (NVG) are required for tactical athletes during training and service. Head and neck injuries due to head supported mass (HSM) are a common occurrence in military personnel. The current study aimed to investigate the effects of HSM on neck muscle fatigue that may lead to chronic stress and injury of the head and neck. METHODS: Subjects wore an ACH and were affixed with electromagnetic sensors to obtain kinematic data, as well as EMG electrodes to obtain muscle activations of bilateral sternocleidomastoid, upper trapezi…

Effects of chronic intermittent asphyxia on rat diaphragm and limb muscle contractility.

OBJECTIVE: In obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), there is intermittent upper airway (UA) collapse due to an imbalance between the collapsing force generated by the diaphragm and the stabilizing force of the UA muscles. This results in chronic intermittent asphyxia (CIA). We have previously shown that CIA affects UA muscle fatigue, but little is known about the effects of chronic hypoxia on diaphragm or on limb muscle contractile properties and structure. DESIGN: Rats were exposed to asphyxia and normoxia twice per minute for 8 h/d for 5 weeks to simulate the intermittent asphyxia of OSA in humans…

Overtraining and glycogen depletion hypothesis.

Low muscle glycogen levels due to consecutive days of extensive exercise have been shown to cause fatigue and thus decrements in performance. Low muscle glycogen levels could also lead to oxidation of the branched chain amino acids and central fatigue. Therefore, the questions become, can low muscle glycogen not only lead to peripheral and central fatigue but also to overtraining, and if so can overtraining be avoided by consuming sufficient quantities of carbohydrates? Research on swimmers has shown that those who were nonresponsive to an increase in their training load had low levels of musc

Feedback from group III/IV afferents in skeletal muscle slows heart rate acceleration when transitioning from rest to low-intensity exercise in males.

Group III/IV skeletal muscle afferents respond to intramuscular mechanical and metabolic stimuli and are more active in fatigued muscle. These afferents project onto the brainstem and motor cortex and modulate cardiovascular and motor responses during exercise. The maximal rate of heart rate (HR) increase (rHRI), a marker of HR acceleration during the rest-to-exercise transition, is linearly related to exercise performance across various training and fatigue states, being faster with better exercise performance and vice versa. This study evaluated the effect of feedback from group III/IV affer

Fatigue-induced glenohumeral and scapulothoracic kinematic variability: Implications for subacromial space reduction.

Superior humeral head translation and scapula reorientation can reduce the subacromial space. While these kinematic abnormalities exist in injured populations, the effect of muscle fatigue is unclear. Additionally, these mechanisms were typically studied independently, thereby neglecting potential covariance. This research evaluated the influence of upper extremity muscle fatigue on glenohumeral and scapulothoracic kinematics and defined their relationship. Radiography and motion tracking systems captured these kinematic relationships, during scapula plane elevation, both before and after fati…

Resting muscle pain as the first clinical symptom in children carrying the MTTK A8344G mutation.

The characteristic clinical presentation, especially the appearance of muscle symptoms, is quite unique in children carrying the mtA8344G mutation. The diagnosis of MERRF syndrome is seldom made in the pediatric age. Fatigue is a common finding in children of pubertal age. Fatigue in combination with recurrent resting muscle pain occurs frequently in the initial phase of various hereditary muscle disorders and in several autoimmune, endocrine and metabolic syndromes. In the absence of obvious biochemical/metabolic abnormalities and in the lack of neurological symptoms the complaints are freque

Understanding fatigue in primary biliary cholangitis: From pathophysiology to treatment perspectives.

Fatigue is considered one of the most frequent and debilitating symptoms in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), affecting over 50% of PBC patients. One in five patients with PBC suffer from severe fatigue, which significantly impairs quality of life. Fatigue is made up of a central and a peripheral component, whose pathophysiology is still greatly unresolved. Central fatigue is characterised by a lack of self-motivation and can manifest both in physical and mental activities (lack of intention). Peripheral fatigue includes neuromuscular dysfunction and muscle weakness (lack of ability). Periphe

Phrenic motor unit recruitment during ventilatory and non-ventilatory behaviors.

Phrenic motoneurons are located in the cervical spinal cord and innervate the diaphragm muscle, the main inspiratory muscle in mammals. Similar to other skeletal muscles, phrenic motoneurons and diaphragm muscle fibers form motor units which are the final element of neuromotor control. In addition to their role in sustaining ventilation, phrenic motor units are active in other non-ventilatory behaviors important for airway clearance such as coughing or sneezing. Diaphragm muscle fibers comprise all fiber types and are commonly classified based on expression of contractile proteins including my

Alterations to landing technique and patellar tendon loading in response to fatigue.

PURPOSE: Fatigue may contribute to knee joint injuries, such as patellar tendinopathy, by increasing joint loading and altering lower limb landing technique, which in turn may increase tissue loading. This study aimed to investigate the effect of lower limb muscle fatigue on the landing technique and patellar tendon loads generated during the horizontal and vertical landing phases of a stop-jump task. It was hypothesized that muscle fatigue would increase patellar tendon loading and alter the landing technique displayed during the horizontal, but not the vertical, landing phase of the stop-jum…
