Complete and partial XYLT1 deletion in a patient with neonatal short limb skeletal dysplasia.

We report on a boy with a neonatal short limb skeletal dysplasia with serious medical complications, associated with one intragenic and one complete deletion of XYLT1. XYLT1 mutations have recently been reported as causative in recessive Desbuquois skeletal dysplasia (DBSD), but the skeletal features in our patient do not fit this diagnosis. It is possible that the phenotype of XYLT1 mutations extends to more aspecific types of short limb skeletal dysplasias and not to DBSD alone.

Bilateral reversed palmaris longus muscle: a rare anatomical variation.

We report a case of bilateral reversed palmaris longus muscle (PLM). The muscle was tendinous in its upper portion and muscular in its lower portion in both arms. This rare variation has been mentioned only once in the literature as a surgical finding. According to the literature, a reversed PLM may cause a compartment syndrome in the wrist area, carpal tunnel, and Guyon's syndrome. The described variation is also useful to the hand surgeon as a tendon graft, a tendon for transfer, or as an anatomical landmark for operations at this area.

Skeletal deformities and mortality in grey herons (Ardea cinerea) at Besthorpe heronry, Nottinghamshire.

Dead and sick grey heron chicks with multiple fractures of the leg and wing bones and/or bone deformities have been reported at Besthorpe Nature Reserve heronry in north Nottinghamshire since 1996. Forty-five grey heron carcases were examined, 35 from the Besthorpe colony and 10 from other colonies where bone disease was not known to occur. On the basis of the results of radiological studies, postmortem examinations, peripheral quantitative computed tomography scanning and four-point bending tests, it was concluded that the skeletal abnormalities were probably due to metabolic bone disease.

[The prevalance of orthopedic disabilities in the district of Cay, Afyon, Turkey].

OBJECTIVES: Data were collected on disabilities from a sample population in order to estimate the prevalence of orthopedic disabilities in the general population. METHODS: A two-stage field study was conducted in Cay, a district of Afyon, Turkey. In the first stage, a list of all individuals with orthopedic disabilities was derived. Then, medical histories were elicited and examinations were made by a team of specialists of orthopedics and traumatology. Radiographic studies were made when necessary. Orthopedic disabilities were defined as any muscle or skeletal abnormality that was associated

Anomalous costochondral cartilage in fetal anencephaly.

Anencephaly is a human fetal malformation with absence of brain and calvarium superior to the orbits. The consequent absence of hypothalamus provides a unique model for studying human development, and therefore skeletal growth, in the absence of hypothalamic hormones and their regulatory functions. To assess the influence of hypothalamic insufficiency on cartilage development, we studied costochondral cartilage sections from eight anencephalic fetuses (18-22 weeks old) and seven controls (16-22 weeks old) with pathologies not directly related to skeletal growth. We found a previously undescrib

Familial congenital bilateral agenesis of the acromion: a radiologically illustrated case report.

Familial congenital bilateral acromion absence was found in four members of one family. Only one of them presented with gradually increasing pain in his left shoulder, resembling a shoulder impingement syndrome. The other members did not have any symptoms. This is the first report of familial occurrence of this extremely rare congenital anomaly.

Serum osteocalcin is associated with scintigraphic abnormalities in lame and clinically sound racehorses.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal injury is a major welfare and economic challenge in racehorses, with stress-related bone injury contributing to training interruption and catastrophic failure. Advanced imaging modalities can detect early skeletal pathology but remain limited in routine screening environments. Circulating biomarkers of bone turnover may provide complementary indicators of skeletal remodelling but require validation against objective imaging findings. OBJECTIVES: Evaluate whether osteocalcin (OC) and C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX), or the CTX/OC ratio, are associate

Unusual presentation of tumor-induced osteomalacia mismanaged due to misdiagnosis: A literature review based on a case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Tumor-induced osteomalacia is a rare but potentially serious disease with nonspecific misguiding manifestations that can result in a wrong diagnosis and being treated for rheumatologic or other similar diseases. In patients with unexpected fractures, resistant musculoskeletal pains, and hypophosphatemia, this diagnosis should be considered by the physicians and approached through a complete history taking, physical exam laboratory, and radiologic evaluation to give the opportunity of on-time treatment to the patient. ABSTRACT: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is an uncom

Asymmetric crying facies: an index of other malformations.

Congenital hypoplasia or absence of the depressor anguli oris muscle is a minor congenital anomaly causing asymmetrical crying facies (ACF). The interesting aspect of this abnormality lies in the frequently associated abnormalities. Cardiac, urogenital, musculoskeletal, respiratory and cervicofacial defects have been described in cases with ACF. Therefore it is suggested that ACF can be used as an index of other congenital malformations. We report three cases with ACF who had varied congenital anormalites.

Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma in a Patient With Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) manifests as multiple cysts in the kidneys and liver but can also present with musculoskeletal and cardiovascular abnormalities. ADPKD patients are at increased risk for renal cell carcinoma development. We show the FDG PET/CT findings in a patient with renal cell carcinoma secondary to ADPKD and complicated by worsening pulmonary metastasis. The primary renal tumor shows intense FDG uptake despite no suspicious features with contrast CT.

Anesthetic implications of emergent Cesarean section in a parturient with Noonan syndrome and bacterial endocarditis.

Noonan syndrome is a relatively common genetically transmitted disorder characterized by facial, cardiac, and musculoskeletal abnormalities. The management of a 27 year old woman with Noonan syndrome at 23 weeks' gestation, presenting with premature labor, who required an emergent Cesarean section for placental abruption, is discussed. In addition to Noonan syndrome, this patient had bacterial endocarditis involving the mitral and aortic valves. The anesthetic implications of Noonan syndrome and endocarditis during pregnancy are presented.

Lyme disease and radiologic findings in Lyme arthritis.

Lyme disease typically begins in the spring or summer months, with a pathognomonic skin lesion and associated flulike or meningitislike symptoms. If the patient is not treated during this early stage, cardiac, neurologic, or musculoskeletal manifestations may occur weeks to months later. Although the clinical picture of Lyme disease is extremely variable, the diagnosis can be made in most cases by recognizing the typical patterns of organ involvement and associated immunologic abnormalities.

Common MRI findings in pre-signing medical assessments of professional soccer players.

BACKGROUND/AIM: In professional soccer, comprehensive musculoskeletal assessments are performed prior to player transfers to evaluate both the current condition and future risk of injury. MRI plays a crucial role in this process, effectively revealing musculoskeletal findings even in the absence of symptoms. This study presents common musculoskeletal MRI findings in professional soccer players undergoing pre-signing assessments and their associations with age, playing position and footedness. METHODS: In this retrospective study, musculoskeletal 3 Tesla MRI scans obtained during pre-signing m

Artificial intelligence in musculoskeletal imaging: realistic clinical applications in the next decade.

This article will provide a perspective review of the most extensively investigated deep learning (DL) applications for musculoskeletal disease detection that have the best potential to translate into routine clinical practice over the next decade. Deep learning methods for detecting fractures, estimating pediatric bone age, calculating bone measurements such as lower extremity alignment and Cobb angle, and grading osteoarthritis on radiographs have been shown to have high diagnostic performance with many of these applications now commercially available for use in clinical practice. Evaluation of the elderly patient with an abnormal gait.

Distinguishing between the normal gait of the elderly and pathologic gaits is often difficult. Pathologic gaits with neurologic causes include frontal gait, spastic hemiparetic gait, parkinsonian gait, cerebellar ataxic gait, and sensory ataxic gait. Pathologic gaits with combined neurologic and musculoskeletal causes include myelopathic gait, stooped gait of lumbar spinal stenosis, and steppage gait. Pathologic gaits with musculoskeletal causes include antalgic gait, coxalgic gait, Trendelenburg gait, knee hyperextension gait, and other gaits caused by inadequate joint mobility. A working kno
